Happy 4th of July America, we have an ICBM you didn't know about!

It's bad news, man. Especially with the moron in White House that is completely unprepared to deal with this threat in a safe and rational way.

Russia and Syria are long-term shitty situations, but NK could soon change life as everyone in the world knows it within the blink of an eye.

We have international relations and arms control experts who have been preparing to deal with this crisis for decades. And we have a crazy president appointing appartichiks and croneys and elevating patronage to an article of faith.

Have to leave it up to China/Japan/So Korea (the UN). My fear is 'we' won't.

Excellent article here, in the Atlantic. The conclusion, more or less, is that doing nothing is the best of the bad options, mainly because as much as Kim Jong-Un hates the United States, he likes being the head of a totalitarian state even more, and if he attacks us, there isn't going to be any more totalitarian state for him to be the head of. That's true even if Kim himself manages to survive the US counterattack.

Other than the "oh, shit, now he can hit us" fear, I don't know how much changes. From NATO's point of view, an attack on a US city is no different from an attack on Seoul, and NK has had the untapped capacity to obliterate Seoul for decades.

shouldn't we be discussing this on Twitter instead so that the Donald reads it all and maybe decides to steal advice?

The wisdom of doing nothing may be true. On the other hand, it's still a terribly delicate situation, as we've got about the furthest thing from a rational actor there is. And we've been doing something like nothing for 63 years and here we are.

And Kim Jong-Un is a problem, too.

Bluster is about the worst of all solutions. Any attack on North Korea would mean the immediate incineration of Seoul, for one thing. But Trump keeps running his mouth. At some point he's going to feel compelled to back it up, because he doesn't want to look like a wimp. That's when things get sticky.

Doing nothing just doesn't work. Clinton gave NK the ability to build a nuke and tried to sell everyone that he was creating peace like Chamberlain at Munich or Obama with Iran. the lesson none of them were willing to understand is that bad people are going to be bad, unless you FORCE them not to be. talk is meaningless.

Re: North Korea Discussion Thread

He actually produced his first nuke when W. was president, but whatever.

How exactly do you force North Korea to do anything. There's no military solution, unless you're willing to accept millions of casualties. Sanctions haven't worked. So what's the plan?

Re: North Korea Discussion Thread

The plan that would work if the US could pull it off would be surgical assassinations of NK's uppermost personnel most loyal to the regime. Regime change. This is, admittedly, extremely difficult to achieve under normal circumstances and harder if not impossible, by orders of magnitude in a closed surveillance state like NK.

I'm sure that the US has already considered this and likely has plans for such an operation just in case, notwithstanding the likelihood of success.

It's a good thing we have such a wise and thoughtful president.

That is literally the plot of this movie.

Of course, the result of this movie was Sony getting hacked so bad it took them months to get up and running again.

Devil's in the details. China has been saying one thing and doing another on North Korea for decades, and has turned a blind eye to rampant smuggling across the border for just as long. We'll see.

Odd. I figured China would be phoning Hong Kong and telling them how great tourism would be if they got nuked.

Re: Did We Have a No Korea Thread?

I understand the fun in getting in shots against Trump. It's really about getting
China and Russia to participate in dialing down the maniac that lives in their back
yard. For the most part (except in NYC) people globally really haven't pointed too
many figures against his tough guy talk.

(this is not an endorsement of The Orange One, real or implied) hahaha...

Re: Did We Have a No Korea Thread?

Dialing down the maniac is a lot harder when you're insulting him to a worldwide audience at the UN.

And since his whole existence is predicated on painting the US as a country that wants to destroy them, it's not helpful when the US actually, you know, threatens to destroy them.
