California Dreamin' IGT -- Mets @ Pads 7/25/17

Frayed Knot
Jul 25 2017 05:43 PM

San Diego, where all the Padres used to wear Brown and the Mets will be in Gray / we'll stop in for a game on a summer's .. er, night.

Seth Lugo vs Jhoulys Chacin [9 - 6; 4.27; 1.29]

Chacin was the starter in the one game of that May series in which the Mets won, smacking him around for [u:19d90m7b]7 runs on 8 hits in 2/3 of an inning[/u:19d90m7b]!!
Conforto = HR; Reyes = Single; Bruce = Single; Walker = Single; Granderson = Sac Fly; Flores = Single; Duda = Double; R. Rivera = Single; Harvey = Ground Out; Conforto = Single
... and that was all for his night. Final Score: Mets 9 - Padres 3

Since that day he's actually been pretty decent aside from the fact that he rarely goes more than six innings - although even that's not so unusual now.

NY Mets at San Diego
When: 10:10 PM ET, Tuesday, July 25, 2017
Where: Petco Park, San Diego, California
By Gracenote

If Jacob deGrom could somehow start two out of every three games, the New York Mets likely would be buyers instead of sellers this week as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches. Alas, deGrom won’t be available Tuesday as New York continues its four-game set against the host San Diego Padres, who had few answers for the ace in a series-opening 5-3 loss.

DeGrom tossed eight strong innings en route to his eighth straight victory as the Mets won for the fifth time in six contests. New York is 13 games out of first place in the National League East and has several players on the trade block - including closer Addison Reed, Lucas Duda and Jay Bruce, who added to his value Monday by going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. San Diego began dealing on Monday, sending starter Trevor Cahill and relievers Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter to Kansas City for pitchers Matt Strahm and Travis Wood and infielder Esteury Ruiz. The rebuilding Padres received a boost Monday from Hunter Renfroe, who belted two home runs and is batting .310 with four blasts and eight RBIs over his last 15 games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.05 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jhoulys Chacin (9-7, 4.26)

Lugo pitched into the seventh inning for the second straight start on Thursday, when he held St. Louis to one run over 6 2/3 frames. The 27-year-old has performed well on the road, going 6-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 13 career games (eight starts) away from home. Lugo, who is making his second career appearance against San Diego, owns a 9-2 record and 3.32 ERA over his last 14 starts dating back to Aug. 25, 2016.

Chacin won his third consecutive decision on Thursday, allowing two runs and four hits over six innings in a 5-2 victory over San Francisco. The Venezuelan has been a pleasant surprise for the Padres, giving up fewer than three earned runs in seven of his last eight outings. Duda is 3-for-6 with two homers against Chacin, who is 1-5 with a 6.50 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) versus the Mets.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Padres SS Erick Aybar could miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a fractured left foot.
2. The Mets placed Zack Wheeler on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right arm and recalled fellow RHP Tyler Pill from Triple-A Las Vegas.
3. Chacin is 5-2 with a 1.94 ERA in 10 starts at Petco Park this season.

The Mets have been severly disConfited, but it looks like the Padres are going with a pretty different look.

I was thinking the same thing.
How many times did we see him fumble the hop from an OF throw because the whole mishmash of gloving the ball, blocking the plate, and making the tag seemed too much for him and he'd wind
up messing up one or more of those tasks?

44 pitches should get a pitcher through 3 innings and maybe 4 if he's being real efficient.
Lugo tonight took that many to get himself 4 outs! - and one of those outs came via the defense, not from him.

Ronnie has previously identified Hodges as the guy who'd spit tobacco juice on all over his new shoes.
Doesn't seem too anxious here about fingering the anti-reader.

In that book 'The Arm' that was out a couple years ago on the issues surrounding the UCL and TJ surgery, one of the pitchers featured because he was going in for his second go-around on TJ was
reliever Todd Coffey (kind of an Edgin looking character who used to sprint in from the pen when summoned). Anyway, he comes across as this same kind of dumb jock by telling his daughter
that if a book's any good it'll get made into a TV show or movie so there's no reason to read it.
You might think that attitude had improved a bit since Ronnie's time but apparently not.

Re: California Dreamin' IGT -- Mets @ Pads 7/25/17

So, was Céspedes' exit purely about double switching, or was Terry concerned about his legs after he circled the bases?

I'm happy to see them sneak back into the fringes of the race, but realistically, if it takes Little League homers to beat the floundering Pads after they've already started selling off parts and are throwing pitchers at us who are just up from AA and A+ ... well, it's hard to project sustainability from that.

I'm just saying, we're only a game and a half out of being three games behind the team that's only four and a half games out of the last wild card spot. Anything can happen.
