IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

Tonight? Oh, nothing. Just the dawning of a new era.

Matz (who hasn't ceased sucking of late) vs. Hoffman (who isn't the guy who nearly threw a no-hitter; thought he was for a minute).

Amed Rosario makes his major league debut at shortstop, per Sandy Alderson.

It starts at the easy to remember time of 8:40 EDT.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

8:40 is better than 9:10

Matz vs Hoffman is the same matchup as the final game of the CitiField series in mid-July, that was the one where Matz gave up 7 runs on 9 hits while getting just 3 outs, which is bad even
by his recent standards.
Met bats got to Hoffman for 4 runs in the middle innings to temporarily cut the drubbing to 9-4 but then Salas, Bradford, and Ramirez happened and the final was 13-4 ... of course it was, it
was a Sunday game.

Rox (60 - 46) are holding on to the 2nd WC slot (1/2 back of ARZ) as Milwaukee and the other pretenders sink towards or below .500

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

BA's final scouting report:

Since the day he signed for a then-Mets international record $1.75 million signing bonus, Rosario has been a step ahead of his peers. He’s the rare shortstop who can impact the game both
with his glove and his bat. Defensively he has plus range, quick hands and excellent anticipation. His has plus arm strength but his accuracy does sometimes waver, something that should
improve as he matures.

At the plate, Rosario is a top-of-the-order hitter with excellent contact skills. Since the beginning of last year, he’s proven himself to be a plus hitter thanks to strong wrists and bat speed. His
power is his weakest attribute. He can pull the ball over the fence at times, but it’s not really his game. Rosario is better as a top-of-the-order table setter who posts high on-base percentages
thanks largely to high batting averages. His plus speed plays well on the basepaths and makes him a threat to swipe 10-15 bases a year.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Francisco Lindor’s power has taken off as a big leaguer. Rosario projects as a similar defender and similar hitter, although he’s more likely to hit five to 10 home runs a year rather than the
15-plus Lindor provides. His combination of defense and hitting ability makes him a potential 4+ WAR player.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

Everything written about Rosario says he is a top half of the order kind of hitter. Everything, that is, except whatever Terry read before he made out that lineup.
IIRC, he doesn't start a player high in the order in that player's first game. But Rosario seems to be a player who would make Terry change his mind.
I also wonder, was the spelling of his name in the thread title a clever acknowledgement of his position in the batting order? If so, kudos.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

What he will be and what he is today are two different things. The idea is to not put all of the pressure on him at once. Agree with that or not, I certainly understand it.

It is an acknowledgment that, after being nowhere near Rosario, we are, at last, amid Rosario. Anywhere he bats tonight is fine as long as it's in the top of one of the first three innings at Coors Field.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

I like this kid. On Facebook he posts:

Dear Mets fans,

We've grown and made it together. To God be ALL the glory. I'm grateful to share this moment with ALL of you, especially Mets fans who has showered me with support. Things won't always be perfect, but expect me to give you ALL of me, each and every day. Let's create long and lasting memories in our Citi.

The kid form Los Mameyes,

Amed

And, of course, being Facebook, someone has to get loose with:

Tom Fox Not good. Bad sign. Shut up and just play. Give us a note when you retire after a stellar career. This is a little much.

Considering how some athletes behave, I'm pretty happy for a guy who seems reverent and appreciative. More power to him. Go Amed!

It's not that the power isn't there with Yoenis, Keith. It's that he has a hard time deciding what to swing at and what not to.

On the other hand, he just had an RBI-like thing!

Lotsa assists so far for young Amed.
Bit of a loopy sidearm throw but he's had plenty of time with each of them so there's been no need to really cut one loose.
Quite different from, say, young Shawon Dunston who'd fire it over there at max speed whether the situation called for it or not.

P.S. if you think the Yanqui game was fucked up it had nuthin' on the BoSox/Indians
Too many weird plays to go into, but the bottom line is that the Sawx re-take 1st place by 1/2 game

Bruce spent the first four months of the season making the teams who passed on him in the offseason regret it.

Here's to him doing more of that over the last two months.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

I don't think he would have had time for the DP but clanky play anyway. Also trouble on the throw to 1st but a LH first baseman puts that in his pocket.

Quick Coors Field review: concessions slow, volume in music in park blessedly low, volume of crowd low. Scoreboard nice but could be sharper. We liked the ivy and pine trees that go all across to the bullpens.

Lots of Met fans in the crowd but most of us seemed resigned to losing and sick of Matz. He looked absolutely mopey and defeated.

Re: IGT 8/1/2017: NYM@COL -- Amid Rosario

Am I crazy? Does Rosario seem to be in the habit of running around backhanders, a la Matsui?

Now, he has twice the arm Matsui had, but that won't mean much in the bigs if he's wasting time running around balls in the hole and then indulging all those mechanics on his transfer.

Keep at it, man.

Worth noting that seemingly every veteran on the team was engaging with Rosario as the game wound down and after it ended, seemingly trying to make sure he wasn't beating himself up, and that was nice.
