08/14 - Mets at Yankees

NY Mets at NY Yankees
When: 7:05 PM ET, Monday, August 14, 2017
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
By Gracenote

The New York Yankees were unable to gain any ground in the American League East over the weekend, but they still lead the wild-card race as they enter the four-game Subway Series, which begins when they host the New York Mets on Monday. The Yankees lost the final two contests of their three-game series against Boston to fall 5 1/2 games behind the division-leading Red Sox but still hold a 1 1/2-game advantage over the Los Angeles Angels for the first AL wild card.

The Yankees managed only five hits in Sunday's 10-inning setback, which was their eighth loss in 12 games this month. Rookie Aaron Judge leads the AL with 35 home runs but has gone deep just once in his last 11 contests. The Mets beat up on major league-worst Philadelphia over the weekend, winning three of four in the series - including a 6-2 decision on Sunday in which Curtis Granderson finished a triple shy of the cycle, drove in three runs and scored three times. Michael Conforto has homered in five of his last eight contests and leads all active Mets with 26 blasts.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, SNY (Mets), YES (Yankees)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Rafael Montero (1-8, 6.06 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Cessa (0-3, 4.83)

Montero is winless in his last six starts, including a loss to Texas on Wednesday in which he yielded four runs on five hits and three walks over three innings. The 26-year-old Dominican has suffered four losses since registering his lone victory of the season at San Francisco on June 25, when he allowed one run in 5 2/3 frames. Montero made his major-league debut against the Yankees, taking the loss after giving up three runs in six innings on May 14, 2014.

Cessa is expected be brought up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make his fifth start of the season and first since July 18, when he escaped with a no-decision after surrendering three runs on four hits and four walks across 3 2/3 innings at Minnesota. The 25-year-old Mexican has not pitched for the Yankees since working 3 1/3 scoreless frames of relief on July 30 against Tampa Bay. Cessa will be facing the Mets for the first time in his career.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Yankees C Gary Sanchez has gone 7-for-19 with two homers and three RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.
2. The Mets purchased the contract of RHP Kevin McGowan from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday to fill the empty roster spot created by Saturday's trade of 2B Neil Walker to Milwaukee.
3. The Yankees recalled LHP Caleb Smith from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned RHP Giovanny Gallegos to the RailRiders.

Re: 08/14 - Mets at Yankees

Because it would not only help salvage a little bit of our season but it would go a long way towards ruining theirs.
The AL East is already slipping away from the Yanx (5.5 games) and if just one or two of the [u:3vh1cld9]eight[/u:3vh1cld9] mediocrities on their tail could win more than a game or two in a row without
stepping in their own shit then the WC would be in trouble also.

The contenders for the AL WC may not be any good but that race should be fun to watch -- currently there are 9 teams inside a 5.5 game span.
What's kept the Yanx in the lead is that those other eight are spending most of their time beating up each other.

What's the over/under on the runs Montero will surrender in the first two innings?

Re: 08/14 - Mets at Yankees

Gardner - turning 34 y/o next week but in the midst of the best power season of his career - 19 HRs!!
Hicks - just off the DL, this former 1st round bust (14th overall - 2008) for the Twins has been kind of like 'found money' for the Yanx, particularly with Ellsbury hurt and/or sucking. Good OF, Good arm
Judge - now that he's had two lousy stints (2nd half of 2016, since ASB 2017) and one good one (1st half 2017) which is real and which the outlier is still TBD
Gregorius - also recently off the DL, having his best season to date
Sanchez - dangerous hitter, good arm, lousy catcher. Too bad we're lousy runners
Headley - moved to 1st to make room for T. Frazier. Yanx basically can't wait to get rid of him
Frazier - low average, good power
Torreyes - The hushed-up bastard son of Joe Torre and Jose Reyes. Contact & speed but little power
Wade - Wouldn't recognize him if he and I were the only two stuck on an elevator, his name is either Tyler Wade or Wade Tyler, I'm not sure which.

If you're going to copy the Wrigley thing and throw the HRs back, a few suggestions:
a) don't
b) if you insist on doing it, do it at the right time: before the next AB, NOT DURING IT!!

That Dom Smith slip was one of those deals where, had it happened to a Yanx 1B at Shea, George would be complaining to the league office about inferior conditions and wanting the game results nullified.
And that was in one of his more rational moods. Otherwise he'd be accusing the Mets of intentionally trying to injure his players.

Four full minutes between the final pitch of Top 7 and the first pitch of Bottom 7 (double the proscribed time) all due to that whole GBA dog and pony show.
If they want to insist on doing that every game AND want it televised then they shouldn't get their two minutes of commercials, and if they are desperate to
run the commercials then they can still play GBA for the in-house fans.
But there's no reason why they should get to do both.

Hicks led off that inning and was a switch-hitter.
Not sure who y'all wanted in there instead of Robles but Judge was up next so if it was going to be Blevins so as to turn Hicks around it likely would have been a one batter outing.
Then came the lefty Gregorius, then the righty Sanchez so I'm open to hearing alternate scenarios for that inning.

I'd tend to blame the fact that we essentially went hitless after the back-to-back HRs.

Hey, I'm asking for suggestions here rather than the standard reaction where every time any reliever gives up anything then Terry is automatically to blame.

Fine, let's start with Blevins to face the SW Hicks and RH Judge -- but if that blew up him then we'd cite Blevins' 1100 OPS vs RHBs and declare THAT to be Terry's fault too.
Seawald and/or Bradford, the two 27 y/old rookies with < 60 innings of ML time combined both of whom pitched yesterday? I like Goeddell there (1 runs allowed in last 10 outings) better than either

Nope, looks like no IGTs for me. I checked in a few times and I was waaaaaaaay behind. Maybe up to 5 minutes. I really don't understand how that works. I guess they have to bounce the signal off a satellite or something.

Still, I'll try to get in here and at least read em afterwards.

Happy birthday to Jay!

Odd fact of the game: For each of the Yanx who HR'd last night [Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez] it was their 40th career HR

Typical Met game. Two early solo home runs, then pfffft. Starter struggles mightily to get through 6. Bullpen gives it up.

Rinse and repeat.

MLB-wide pct of solo HRs = 58.9%
NYM pct of solo HRs = 68.2%

Now you'd expect some kind of gap given our poor (though not bottom of the barrel) OBA, but still ...

I cannot wait for Teufel or Geren or Lopez or literally anyone else to start managing this team.

I didn't know Hicks was a switch hitter. So that makes it less of an obvious decision. But still a switch that has to be made.

Robles has been pretty good since he's been back. But he doesn't have enough pitches to mix it up, and I think leaving him in for a second inning is pushing your luck. Especially in that ballpark. It was like a carbon copy of the Colorado game, where he was able to get through one inning, but in his second inning of work, they got to him.

Everyone in my house groaned as soon as they saw Robles out there to start the second inning. It looks like Edgy felt that too.

Sewald has been our most reliable reliever all season. The obvious move is to start the inning with him. Sure, he pitched Sunday, but was off Saturday and has hardly been overworked.

I suspect Terry was holding out Sewald and trying to stretch Robles because of the "you don't pitch your closer in a tie game on the road" rule. It's stupid. This four game series was a chance to give us some ray of sunshine in this otherwise miserable season. Fuck Terry and fuck 2017.

If I were managing, Ramos would have pitched the 8th against the heart of the order. Then mix and match the rest of the way, starting with my best relievers. But I know that this is so far from convention that it's hard to ask that of anyone.

I'm generally in favor of riding a guy as long as you can, but he sure seemed to labor through that first inning, fighting himself at times, even if he did escape with two strikeouts. I thought, "Get him out on a positive. He's a reclamation project still trying to find his way back. And he's seen a lot of use of late. You have eight relievers. Use them. Tie games can disappear fast in this park."

Of course, before I thought all that, the Yankees punched me in the nose.

Robles famously melted down in the last MFY series iirc. But the reason the Mets lost is that we hit like shit.

Perhaps the fact that 2 of our top HR hitters have been batting in the lead-off position much of the season has something to do with it? Even after the 1st inning, hitting after d'Arnaud and the pitcher for the rest of the game isn't going to give a guy (whether Conforto or Granderson) a lot of opportunities for 3-r HRs.

Robles for a second inning is never a good idea, regardless of venue or opponent.

Yes. Definitely. Have to muster up more than that against Cessa and the pen.

My post was more:

1. Frustrated venting.
2. Realization that if we ever get good again, and have options in the pen, I certainly don't want Terry Collins managing them.

Nice guy. Time for him to go.

At quick glance of the dugout card I too thought that was the NY Football

I learn something new everyday. I never heard of that brand.

I tweeted that IN ACTION "butt dialer" card to Jay. I never get responses in such situation but I'm going to go take and look/see.

Spl chk is trying to tell me there is no such word as "dialer". All you writers out there, is that true?
