Caribbean Kings: The DSL Mets in 2017

Edgy MD
Jul 16 2017 02:33 PM

The DSL Mets 1 are tearing their league counterparts to bits, currently sitting but a half game out of first in the South Division of the Dominican Summer League at 25-11. That's a .694 record! You know who plays .694 ball? NBA teams play .694 ball, that's who. It doesn't tend to happen in baseball.

Now, that could be illusory. They could be stacking the roster with older players. And it seems that, on average, they skew older than their division. But you know what? Almost every other team in the division is one of two teams their organization has in the league. The Twins, Rockies, Angels, Yankees, Cardinals, and Nationals have their only DSL entrant in that division, presumably concentrating all their talent in one place. Only the Phillies join the Mets in putting a split squad in that division. And the DSL Phillies Red team is barely keeping their heads above water at 14-21 / .400.

So, the DSL Mets 1 are good. Real good. But maybe they're treating that squad as the varsity, stacking all the talent on their roster and leaving the DSL Mets 2 to take a beating. But you know what? No, my friends, no! The DSL Mets 2 are even better! They're currently sporting a 25-10 record and a .714 winning percentage and sitting four games atop the league's San Pedro division.

DSL Mets rool! Let's meet some of the stars.

At an age when kidz run wild, Willie Astudillo has also caught 39% of would-be basestealers. Jhander Saez, on the other hand, has successfully stolen 11 of 12 bases.

It's right there in black and white, but I'd like to take a moment and note that Miguel Ramirez has struck out 34 batters and walked ONE! And yeah, Ivan Santana has no business pitching against teenagers at 23, but what can I do about it? All I can do is tell you that he is pitching superlatively.

This is an all-time performance by these kiddy Mets! Somebody get down there with a camera!

Re: Caribbean Kings: The DSL Mets in 2017

Miguel Ramirez finally walked his second batter today.

He also combined with Ramón Guzmán on a one hitter. Miggy took the first six innings and Rammy the last three. Guzmán was untouchable, giving up no walks, no hits, and striking out six, lowering his ERA to 0.35.

Re: Caribbean Kings: The DSL Mets in 2017

The DSL Mets 1 are being broken up. Having completed an outstanding season that most other teams would envy (44-20, .620), the season has come to end as they finish four games out of the money in the Dominican Summer League South Division. Some of the players are being sent stateside to finish the season in the Gulf Coast or Appalachian Leagues, while others are being shipped to the other side of the bunkhouse to help the even better DSL Mets 2 (50-21, .704) in the playoffs as the champs of the Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division, which start tomorrow.

Even by DSL standards, the Mets 1 were no great shakes offensively, managing just 14 homers in 70 games in the power-sapped league. That's hardly the bottom of the barrel though—the A's have just one DSL team and they produced only five homers in 72 games). This isn't as bad as it looks, though. The Mets 1 were 11th of (a whopping) 40 teams in OPS, led by 17-year-old third baseman José Peroza (.786) and fellow millennium baby, outfielder Moisés Gonzalez (.772). Venezuelan Catcher Wilfred Astudillo has gone .291 / .351 / .368 // .719 and has caught 39.5% of base-stealers.

The real hotsy-totsy stuff has gone on the pitching side. Yeah, keep in mind that it's a pitcher's league, but there's still some cats to get you swinging:

Nelson Leon (22): 8-3 / 2.06 in 70.0 IP with 11 walks and 52 strikeouts and a 1.01 WHIP
Miguel Ramirez (20): 6-2 / 1.76 in 66.2 IP with 3 (!) walks and 53 strikeouts and a 0.90 WHIP
Jorge Cespedes (21): 6-2 / 2.03 in 62.0 IP with 14 walks and 49 strikeouts and a 1.19 WHIP
Malky Mena (20): 3-3 / 2.13 in 55.0 IP with 7 walks and 50 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP

Sure, kids, right? But choose your poison. Closing duties were split by:

Ramon Guzmán (20): 1-1 / 1.25 with 4 saves in 43.1 IP with 11 walks and 34 strikeouts and a 1.02 WHIP
Hector Rodriguez (19): 3-0 / 1.86 with 4 saves in 38.2 IP with 21 walks and 55 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP

If you like to see control, you've got it up and down that group with the exception of Rodriguez, and he's got a Leathersich strikeout rate.

That's a sweet foreshadowing of what Mets of the future might look like if you live long enough. And remember, that's the weaker of the two DSL teams, with the DSL 2 team the subject of tomorrow's update.

Re: Caribbean Kings: The DSL Mets in 2017

The DSL Mets 2 rode six shutout innings from Willy Taveras and consistent table setting at the top of the order from center fielder Jhoander Saez and shortstop Shervyen Newton to a 6-1 victory over the DSL Dodgers 1.

Unfortunately, the Dojers evened the series today with a tense 1-0 victory, wasting 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball of the pen provided by Boris Sanchez. Left fielder Yoel Romero garnered two of the four Met hits, while DH Jorge Martinez walked three times.
