So does TJ stand for Tommy John? If it's not clear, you get the surgery no? Recovery time is a lot less for position players. Season is lost anyway. Why not get healthy for next year? I guess maybe you have a month to figure it out to still be ok for spring training. But it would be stupid to rehab the get the surgery in March.

Well, surgery-vs.-rehab is the player's call. And in such situations, teams generally push for surgery. A young player without a contract typically wants to talk to everybody—agents, parents, priests, players who've been through the same dilemma.
