Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

Mike Puma in the Post says Sandy is likely to return next year.

The Mets’ biggest free-agent question within the coming months might not involve a player with an expiring contract.

As the Mets look to 2018 and beyond, the first order of business will be establishing leadership atop the baseball operations department, and signs point to general manager Sandy Alderson returning to lead the front office, according to sources.

Alderson, who turns 70 in November, is completing the three-year contract he signed after the 2014 season. And to his closest associates, Alderson has shown no signs of declining energy in the midst of an unexpected losing season that has removed the Mets from National League playoff contention.

Team owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz are unlikely to make Alderson the scapegoat for this season, according to sources, leaving it to the general manager to decide his own immediate future. And multiple individuals who work closely with the GM indicated they would be surprised if Alderson decided to retire.

Among the possibilities is Alderson will receive a “president of baseball operations” title and elevate assistant general manager John Ricco to GM. But any restructuring would be purely cosmetic, as Ricco already is heavily involved in the daily operations of the team.

Mets appear committed to Sandy Alderson for the long haul

I'm OK with that. I think Sandy has done a great job. Is it pretty certain that we'll have a new manager as Terry rides off into the sunset?

I'm not sure it's "certain" but it seems to be what many people expect.

I, too, hope Sandy stays. I'd be surprised if Terry was back next year...though, I've said that a couple of times during his time here, so you never know.

Sandy stays, Terry? A fond farewell I guess,

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

I like Sandy, and I mostly believe in him. But I have my concerns.

1) For an organization that has declared it's commitment to on-base percentage, they haven't produced it. Nor do they tend to honor it when a player demonstrates a capacity for it.

2) Relatedly, they've been faking it in the leadoff slot since 2011. Two thousand eleven!! That's just way too long to just be catching as catch can with such a vital role.

3) It's like the defense gets worse every season.

4) The minor league teams this season have almost uniformly terrible records.

5) There may or may not be a cocaine problem in the organization.

6) There is almost certainly is a young, arrogant, and invincible problem in the organization.

7) It takes stubborn-ness to believe that the injury rate is unconnected to the weight-training philosophy. I think they've let a fox in the henhouse with this Barwis character.

8) As Barwis is a Wilpon discovery, his continued presence speaks to Alderson's ability to manage up. Not that I believe too many other GM's would have the juice to manage up better.

Curious if the one practical effect of giving him a "president of baseball operations" title would be him encroaching on Jeff's authority.

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

Kristie Ackert, in today's Daily News:

After two straight seasons upended by injuries in their rotation, Sandy Alderson said that going into next season, the Mets will not look at their rotation as the foundation of the team.

Okay, I'm good with that. Tilting the balance of power a bit more towards the offense seems reasonable.

The Mets GM said the goal will likely be to get five innings out of their starters and then turn to, what Mets fans have to hope, is a much-improved bullpen.

UGH! I'm not good with that. I hope she misunderstood. Planning to get four innings out of your bullpen every game seems like a recipe for disaster.

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

Yeah, I ok with Alderson and his team back , is Depo still there ?, have not seen much of him lately.....agree that expecting any bullpen to work that much and be successful is an awful idea...

EDIT - Depodesta is with the NFL Browns.....

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

I'm taking literally none of Alderson's public statements about team building seriously.

I dunno, I think he's done a good, not great, job and I'm fine with him continuing. I don't know if the next guy would be necessarily better.

I think Barwis/injury is a tenuous connection at best. I probably agree that there's a workout connection, but more related to philosophy and goals of the players/team. Barwis is simply the tool used, and he did come highly recommended. In fact, other players come to PSL to work out with him, though it's hard to confirm who. You could argue that the Mets grabbing him and locking him in to THEIR location is actually a coup. Previously players were traveling to Michigan to work out with him anyway, so now they have those players under their roof, with a little more control, and even subsidize it a little if I recall.

I mean, there are always going to be concerns. Is it too NFL oriented? (Barwis has plenty of football clients) is it too much weights? too many reps? etc. There's a lot of study on this but there's very little conclusive links between certain workouts/muscles to injuries. It's not like the Mets didn't get hurt before Barwis.

Terry via Alderson though. is Alderson sticking around short term? because a new GM would presumably want to have his own crew. So why would you hire another manager if you're gonna dump him in a year or two?

And what about the coaches? the offense hasn't shined, OBP has been bad. Is Long out? Warthen's been around forever at this point, but the pitching was..bad..this year. If Terry's gone, does he survive the ax again? Is it time to promote Viola?

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

I suspect Ackert is somewhat paraphrasing Alderson when she says that he says it's the team's "goal" to get five innings from the starters then go to the pen. Rather I think it's more a case where they
have to plan for things to go that way and not simply depend on starters you think can dominate often enough to get you to the short men at the end of the game.

This bullpen buildup is certainly the trend in the game (Royals & Yanx most prominently). The Yanx are 10 games over .500 with a starting staff that, aside from Severino, has been both mediocre and
injured all while nominal closer Chapman has missed time and been probably the weakest link in the chain even when he has been available.

Re: Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets

Yeah, Depo left years ago and they never replaced him. Barwis I think is a problem if only because other trainers have raised so many questions about him and the Mets health under him has been awful. Cespedes with the same injury 2 years in a row, Syndergaard way too musclebound, Duda broken back etc etc. Even if he's not the actual or only problem, and maybe he's not, perception indicates it's time to move on. It's not like this country has a shortage of qualified trainers but there's only 1 Syndergaard.

I think Sandy will give the GM title of Ricco going forward and kind of step back as a GM Emeritus of some kind. I think Ricco will name a new manager. That new manager will be Chip Hale!

I also hope Ricco discovers a new market inefficiency.

I like Sandy. Got us to the postseason two years in a row. I don't know if he can get blamed for the devastating injuries. I'm a little disappointed in what we got for selling off our better hitters.

well _that_ was brilliant, but sounds like it came from Terry.
