IGT 9/7/2017: CIN@NYM -- Codpiece de Resistance

The onetime codpiece of the franchise will be front and center for the Mets as the Reds come to town. Tyler Mahle will pitch for Cincinnati. The four probable pitchers the Mets have slated for this series -- Harvey, Lugo, Flexen and Montero -- each have ERAs of 5.00 or higher. Without diving into Baseball Reference and how Craig, Hook, Jackson and Miller lined up in September of 1962, this has got to be some kind of first. Besides, each those guys got their ERA in the fours by the time the season ended. 718/507-TIXX or mets.com for tickets, plenty of which would figure to be available.

CF/speedster Billy Hamilton broke his hand yesterday and will almost certainly miss the remainder of the season. This Mahle guy pitching: Tyler F. Mahle (that's actually how his name is listed: Tyler F. Mahle) will be making his 3rd ML appearance/start The Reds 7th round draft pick out of HS in 2013. RH 6' 3" / 210. Had some pretty good numbers this year in AA Pensacola and in AAA Louisville. Both his starts were against Pittsburgh on Aug 27 & Sept 2: 3 runs on 4 hits + 4 walks in 5 innings in his debut, then 6 shutout innings on 5 hits/0 walks the second time. Reds lost both games, he got an L and an ND. Pitch counts have been high both times, but that's what you get with young pitchers.

Lines are for saps. Build walls where there is no ambiguity with regard to whether the ball cleared it or not.

After that rather lengthy (25 pitch?) 1st inning, Harvey's actually been quite efficient since and is right on target (74 pitches) at the end of five. And one of his two runs allowed should be unearned on account of that uncaught foul pop.

Harvey done for a pinch hitter after 5 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, only 74 pitches. this after they almost pitched him on 3 days rest. does it feel like there is just no plan, no organizational philosophy, just a day by day exercise in doing what they feel at the moment and hoping it works?

Lots of hopeful signs in the game: Harvey pitched just fine, Familia seemed to be in good form, and Nimmo showed some power.
