IGT 9/9/2017: CIN@NYM -- Flex and the Citi Cancelled

Next on Flex and the Citi:

As the Mets attempt to go "four" it, Samantha is determined to get it on, Charlotte lets her insecurities get the best of her, Miranda tries to take a little time for herself away from the office, and Carrie discovers that Chris is miffed because with Robert back in town, Terry has chosen to spend Saturday night with Rafael. What's worse, Chris will be left alone for the weekend because Terry is going with Jake on Sunday. Meanwhile, across the hall, Homer will try not to give up too many homers, but not if Jose and his crowd have anything to say about it.

It's not TV. It's SNY on PIX.

I hope Travis comes up as Mr. Big again, as long as we don't have to look at Sarah Jessica Parker.
Good job.

Neither of the two Travises have cracked the lineup.

I was thinking Travis Taijeron, since he hit the home run last night.
He'll have to get 'em next time.

Nimmo batting cleanup again. I'll take 'Words I Never thought I'd Type' for $200, Alex.

Innocent two-out walks that turn into go-ahead two-out rallies are the shizzle.

I think they said last night he's been taking some swings but throwing is
still a problem -- but who the heck can keep up with who's hurt, not, almost
back, gone for season, gone forever and due back soon....

So he's on the shelf but it's one of the lower shelves where we can still get him down and use him without having to get out the ladder and stuff.

And we're through the fifth with the lead.

Does Montero take his turn at bat?

I saw that too. Bad boy, Jacob. He was trying to hide it, too, looking furtively over his shoulder but the camera caught him.

I WW'd, why was deGrom batting? It's September, put a few guys on the bench
if need be. What if he breaks his leg running to first? (which in 2017, doesn't seem
that crazy a notion?)

Leading to a two-run single!

All those infield plays by the Reds, and their pitchers just wouldn't throw strikes. Finally they groove one.

Re: IGT 9/9/2017: CIN@NYM -- Flex and the Citi Cancelled

It's too bad they might not lose 100 games. The Mets can't do anything right this season. When they're supposed to win, they lose. And now that it's in their best long term interest to lose every single remaining game, they're off on a winning streak, playing some of their best ball of the year.

So they'll win 70 games instead of picking 4th, or 5th in next year's tremendously loaded draft. Whoop dee doo.

FWIW, Jamie Callahan sticks his tongue out while pitching. Like, every friggin' time. Has the booth commented on that?

Otherwise, it was a great game to attend. The odds are that this was our last home game of the season, but at least it was an enjoyable one.

Re: IGT 9/9/2017: CIN@NYM -- Flex and the Citi Cancelled

From the baseball lore file:
I read that Denny McLain stuck out his tongue to let Mickey Mantle knew he was going to get a room service fastball so he could hit his 500th* career home run.
Later

* = or was it another milestone?

Re: IGT 9/9/2017: CIN@NYM -- Flex and the Citi Cancelled

It wasn't for his 500th HR but for what McLain and others thought might be the last one he'd ever hit*. I never heard about a tongue story.
McLain outright told Mantle that he'd groove one for him. Rumor had it that Mantle didn't believe him initially so let the first one go by before realizing what was up and smacking the second out of the park.

* Turned out he'd hit his final one the next day off Jim Lonborg - so his final two HRs were off the AL CY winner to-be and the reigning one.

Re: IGT 9/9/2017: CIN@NYM -- Flex and the Citi Cancelled

Mantle shouldn't have retired. He was embarassed by his .237 batting average, but it was the year of the pitcher, and the whole league hit .230. His OPS+, which he had little way of knowing, was still a lofty 143.

The next year, the mounds were lowered and folks started hitting again. If he could have found a way to stay on the field a few more seasons, it might have been a three-way race to 714.

Keep in mind that the run that Amed Rosario scored was due to Jacob deGrom successfully getting on base by drawing a walk. IMHO that's worth a sip of beer for Jacob.

The McLain gift was actually based on the mere assumption that the Mick was coasting into the clubhouse.
Mantle went to ST in 1969 and it was only then that he determined (confirmed?) he didn't have enough to push on.
