Cincy Facts and Figures -- aka: KTE

Well, they're not very good (3rd worst record in NL) and we get to play them seven times in the next 13 days.

They do hit, mainly they hit lots of HRs -- Votto = 33; Cozart = 17; Suarez - 24; Duvall = 30; Schebler = 25; Gennett - 22 (and half of you don't even know half those guys) -- which helps them score
at a somewhat above league average rate.

But they're the league's worst at preventing runs BY A LOT, like even worse than us by nearly 1/2 R/G, and there's only so far you can blame it on their home park.

Tuesday 7:10 -- Flexen vs Sal Romano (R)
Romano is a Syosset-born kid out of Southington HS in Connecticut who was a 23rd round draft pick in 2011.
This is the rookie season for the (6' 5" - 270 !) 23 y/o and will be his 11th start: 3-5, 4.96, 1.54 thru the first 10

Wednesday 7:10 -- Montero vs Homer Bailey (R)
Bailey was once the 7th overall pick by the Reds way back in 2004 and was one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball within a few years. But he's now a 31 y/o with just 43 starts
from 2014-17 due to a variety of injuries including TJ surgery. He's 4-6 this season in 12 starts with an ungodly 7.99 ERA and 1.97 WHiP

Thursday 12:35 -- deGrom vs Robert Stephenson
Stephenson is another one of Cincy's 1st round picks (27th overall in 2011) and has been the team's best prospect for several years now. But he's been used more in relief than as a starter and has
spent as much time in the minors as in the majors since his ML debut last season. 19 games this year (5 starts) 5.81 ERA, 1.75 WHiP

The Usual Suspects:
C - Tucker Barnhart - currently their main guy w/Devon Mesoraco injured
1B - Joey Votto - how many MVP votes can a last place guy get?
2B - Scooter Gennett - was a swiss army knife guy who pretty much took over 2B around mid-season after he started hitting more HRs (incl. 4 in one game) than anyone named Scooter has the right to hit
SS - Zack Cozart - All Star glove having by far his best offensive season
3B - Eugenio Suarez - some very nice numbers: .270/.381/.497; 44 XBHs
LF - Adam Duvall - swing hard in case you hit it
CF - Bill Hamilton - 54 of 64 in steals and can go get 'em in CF, but he can't steal 1st meaning virtually all his value is tied up in defense: .244/.296/.323
RF - Scott Schebler - the other half of the high-power/low-OBA corner OF bookends

Their closer, Raisel Iglesias, who was their opening day starter in 2016, is having a very good season but no one else in the pen seems to have an ERA under about 15.00

The Reds aren't all unlike us, trying to build around young pitching that's blowing up their faces and hitting a lot of home runs.

They haven't gotten nearly as far as we did on the pitching side as DiScalfini and Finnegan are their potential deGrom and Syndergaard, so to speak, and both guys have been hurt all year and in the meantime their Matz and Harvey are still in the minors or taking their lumps as rookies now. Plus their Colon is Bronson Arroyo, who's had an awful year and will likely retire.

deGrom in a day game.
An early day game.
Time for form to hold up.

I was thinking Homer Bailey was a Met at some point, but realized I had conflated him with Aaron Harang.

Second straight 30-homer season for Duvall, but otherwise an empty vessel.

Well there is Michael Lorenzen, he's leading the team in wins (8), throws 95 and is also a good hitter. Slumping a little in the 2nd half.

Lefty Wandy Peralta also seems moderately effective.

Ex-Met figures we won't be seeing but might think about this week include:
[list][*]Dilson Herrera, who has been on the Louisville Bats disabled list since mid-season with shoulder inflammation, his season quite possibly done.[/*:m]
[*]Max Wotell, who came over in the same Bruce trade that Herrera came in, flaming out in the lower minors, on the sideline with the same shoulder inflammation since the exact same day Dilson went down with the same. Hmmm... .[/*:m]
[*]Doug Flynn, calling games on the radio.[/*:m][/list:u]

We're lucky they wouldn't accept Flexy.

Yikes:
New York has won 19 of its last 21 games against Cincinnati, including 14 straight since September 2014.

If I believed in whammy's, I'd say I put the whammy on 'em.
