Grand Memories

Curtis Granderson.

Almost everything you wanted a Met to be. Community minded. Engaging. Kept an even keel in times of adversity and times of success. Stayed in great shape into his later years. His great shape wasn't one of the mesomorph roidy great shapes either. From Cubs territory but disliked the Cubs. Can I marry you?

Funny. Ran the We Follow Lucas Duda Instagram account and somehow Lucas appreciated him for it. Held on to Lucas' leg as Luke left the clubhouse, making sure Duda's last minutes as a Met were as awkward as most of his career was. Certainly most of his off-the field career.

Hit everywhere in the lineup. Didn't care about being moved. Played all three outfield positions. Didn't care about being moved.

You know how you can tell a terrible person? A self-loathing person? the quite-possibly-a-racist person? Everybody you've ever encountered who said, "I HATE the way he puts his glove on his head when he's not using it! For INTERVIEWS! Why does he DO that?!!" He does it so we can spot the racist, guy.

One of the worst hole-diggers in Mets history. When a guy is hitting like Babe Ruth since May 16, but his overall stat line still doesn't look particularly good, that's a guy who dug a terrible hole the first six weeks.

Had a strange swing where he liked the pitch at his knees, but didn't loop under it like most lefthanders. So he put a tennis-like topspin on most of his drives to right. This led to a lot of his hardest hit balls dying at the fence, but on the other hand, he hit as many homers as anybody during his time here. He was never going to reach the Shea Bridge with that swing but it sure worked for him.

Didn't bunt against the shift.

Showed a lot of sock and loose-ish pants. Reportedly did it to emulate the uniforms of the Negro Leagues.

Generous in his willingness to be the face of the franchise during David Wright's extended absences, even in his first season. I can't imagine how distracting that is, being the go-to quote guy, the guy who gives a tour of the clubhouse to the child with cancer, the guy who has to pose with the celebrity guest or the corporate bigwig presenting an over-sized check to the Katz Women's Center. I can't imagine how distracting that all is when you're trying to get out of a slump.

His last swing was a grand slam.

Folks talked shit. He didn't bite back.

His wife seems pretty and real nice.

Did I mention he's simply a model ballplayer?

Re: Grand Memories

Signed to a four year/big bucks deal, from the Yanx, at the age of 32, coming off a season lost to multiple injuries, with a history of being stymied by LHP, and power numbers inflated by a Little League ballpark.

That's a deal that had potential disaster written all over it and, with each slow start, Met fans kept expecting that this was the year the contract would leap up to bit us.
And yet, while it was far from the greatest deal ever made, it somehow never did bite us and we had as good a 3.75 seasons as we had any right to expect and a solid citizen who would never embarrass us.
Well played CG

His wife seems pretty and real nice.

Does Barack know?
Actually, considering how 'out there' Curtis was the go-to media guy, I never had any idea about his personal life or even if he is married.

Ended 2016 at #62 on the CPF Rankings list (just ahead of RA Dickey, right behind Turk Wendell) and has a chance to move up as much as 20 more slots depending on the results of this year's list.

His wife could easily pass as Michelle's sister. (or is that actually her?)

The grand slam the other night is fresh and will probably be a lasting memory.
Gotta be one of the nicest Mets of all-time. If he continues in baseball after he
retires I hope he finds his way back to Queens in some capacity and not that
horrid place to the north.

I wasn't going to root for the Dodgers this post season but I may have to now.

Re: Grand Memories

I remember his first Subway Series as a Met at Yankee Stadium. He had a typically slow start to the season, but I knew that once he came home to that short porch he'd hit well. He did, and I totally resented it.

That said, he would always warm up nicely mid-season, and he was a true class act. And finishing his Mets career with a grand slam was a great way to go out.

Re: Grand Memories

He will be missed more than most.

I would predict a highly successful post baseball career from Grandy.

Gonna have to root for the Dodgers post season.

Good luck Curtis!!!

Granderson as a NYM in April (cumulative): .183/.287/.324
Granderson as a NYM May - Sept (cum): .250/.351/.468

Amazing how that pattern consistently repeated itself for four straight seasons.

Wound up with 216 more PA as a Met than as a Yanqui ... so there's that, though still had most as a Tiger

Re: Grand Memories

"Real New Yorkers root for the Mets". Or something very much like that when he signed. That took guts, and it was a subtle dig at the Yankee org from a guy who doesn't usually dig, subtly or not.

Graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I got my master's in math. Did the school proud.

Re: Grand Memories

Also, hit like a middle of the order guy, except when he was hitting in the middle of the order. I never understood that.

OE - Somehow, I always saw him as a great hitter when he hit leadoff, and a bad hitter when he was 4th or 5th. But the numbers don't bear me out on this. In 2016, he OPSed 1.045 in 100 PAs as a cleanup hitter.

Re: Grand Memories

Absolutely super guy, awful starts nearly ruined 2016 and practically did ruin this year, though he had help.

This week surpassed Harrelson as the all-time RBI leader among guys who wore No. 3, has held the HR title for years.

Probably miscast as the cleanup hitter he was his first Mets year, turned into a terrific leadoff hitter.

At the risk of Francessing, I liked him in a "big spot" - one of the guys you didn't have to worry for in the postseason.

Re: Grand Memories

Every time I sat adjacent to RF or CF, if he was playing there, he had a great rapport with the crowd. Didn't take much. Just a knowing nod, a brief wave, a smile, but he always went out of his way to make that connection. A few times when I've sat close to home plate, I saw the same thing. Fan wanted a selfie with Curtis? Curtis would pause and pose.

He had no arm, but go back and watch the losing run of WS Game 1 score. No, Grandy didn't throw the Royal out, but he heaved as best he could and almost got him. I know that sounds like faint praise, but he turned a no-doubter into a close play because (I sensed) he was gonna give everything he had for essentially as big a throw as he'd ever make in the major leagues.

Clutch hitter in that World Series when so many Mets weren't. Clutch fielder in the otherwise lamentable 2016 Wild Card game. Fucking looked like a good baseball player. Walked when he wasn't hitting. Fielded when he wasn't driving in runs. Power in the leadoff spot. The glove on the head while entertaining Gelbsian inquiries. Two extra-inning homers to beat the Twins last September.

Jesus, I liked him.

Re: Grand Memories

Mets Guy in Michigan recalled that in an earlier life, while recovering from an injury, Curtis got sent down to the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps, who play Comstock, a suburb of Grand Rapids. Rehab gigs are tough, you've got to get back in shape, you've got to get used to riding buses again (no fun for a guy recovering from a pulled stapedius), and you're expected to buy meals for everybody (even if you haven't hit the big money in the majors yet). But before Curtis even arrived, he called the press office and asked them to get him some personal appearances while he was slumming.

Re: Grand Memories

Most of all I like the interviews. Always with a smile. Always with the appropriate word. We could tell he cared, about the game, the fans and life in general. You could look into the man and see someone who you would want to be a role model for future generations. I can't think of any better words, or I would use them.

He always hustled and seemed to enjoy the game. He represented himself, the Mets, and MLB with class. He treated the game and the fans with respect.

All the best to you Curtis.

Re: Grand Memories

He was a generally good, game ballplayer, AND kicked ass in some big, big spots (see: leadoff HR in Game 5).

And he is a great, warm, funny, generous human. Love the Curtis. Will gladly root for Dodger success if it gives him a ring.

I like Goody. But you'd think with 27 guys on the DL, getting bigwigs to personal appearances wouldn't be a problem.
