#49 in his second AB tonight.
In his 3rd AB he merely doubled.

Half-a-Hundred

'On pace for' 62.8

11th guy to reach 50 or more by this date.
The other ten all reached at least 60

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

The Marlins "will trade" Giancarlo Stanton at the end of the season - or so claims Bob Nightengale of USA Today

It would be altogether different if Jeffrey Loria was still owning the team. He would be lampooned to Cuba if he dared trade Stanton.
Sure, no one likes trading away a star, but the Marlins [under the new ownership] simply have no choice this time. This is a franchise already with more than $400 million in debt.
They simply can’t be viable economically with a player whose salary jumps from $14.5 million to $25 million in 2018, escalates to $32 million, and doesn’t stop until 2028.
The Marlins, who want to keep their payroll around $100 million, simply can’t have one-third of their payroll tied into one player, no matter how many homers Stanton hits.

The Giants, Cardinals, and Rangers have reportedly been the ones doing the most sniffing around since he cleared waivers.

this made me gag.

Does this mean they'll have enough money left over after they sign Machado to play third base?

Ugh!

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

Almost no shot at the record, but would be one of the largest totals in a while, so that's cool. Love this crazy streak he's on.

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

Also the team has been on a hot streak to coincide with his crazy streak so that, even with the loss last night, the Marlins currently sit at a game over .500 and within 5.5 games of a WC slot.
While not quite the equivalent of the AL mashup, the NL WC race has recently morphed from a seemingly dull two-team race (ARZ & COL) where the only thing left to decide was which team
hosted, to a legit six team derby for two slots, or seven teams for three slots if you bring the Cubs into it since the NL Central crown is hardly decided yet.

[crossout:3d1f89sq]55[/crossout:3d1f89sq] 56 with ten games to go (assuming the Fish don't bat around in this inning and give him another AB today)

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

The Daily News ran an Associated Press article today that contemplated Stanton's chances of breaking Roger Maris' record of 61 homers. No mention of the fact that that record was broken years ago. (I think it still stands as the American League record, but that wouldn't apply to Stanton.)

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

Well some still consider it to be 61, which means if Stanton ties or passes that mark those Yanqui fans who claim that as "their" record won't be able to do so anymore.

But it's still the official American League record, isn't it?

Re: We're gonna need a Stanton watch

Last night Ichiro made the last out in the bottom of the 8th to deny Stanton an extra AB.
So how do you remedy that? Why you hit him leadoff of course!!
