Jim Duquette says...

...that the Mets are "likely suitors" for J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Jay Bruce, and Lorenzo Cain.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/250373002 ... offseason/

On Hosmer, age 28:

Look for him to command a six- or seven-year deal around $20 million per year.

On Martinez, 30:

Five years and $110 million are attainable if Martinez continues his current tear.

Bruce, 31:

...he will likely end up with a four-year contract north of Josh Reddick's $52 million dollar deal last offseason.

Cain, 32:

Cain could still command four years and a total of $60 million or more.

Re: Jim Duquette says...

If they land any of them, it will be the worst of the four, and the cheapest

Re: Jim Duquette says...

You would be overpaying for all four.

I like J.D. Martinez the best.

Boy do I wish I though up this line. It's funny because it's true.

While I was walking the dog this morning, I was thinking of Duquette's prediction that the Mets would be in on Eric Hosmer.

I wonder if he just made that up himself, or if he based that on inside information? It would be an interesting development if they did pursue him, given that it would mean turning away from Dominic Smith at a very early point. My guess is that they'll focus their attention on an outfielder, and perhaps a second- or third-baseman.

Two months until the next episode of Mets Hot Stove. It will be interesting to know which players will be discussed.

As with much of Hot Stove and pre Hot Stove. You just need one "insider" to float an idea and then everyone has to talk about it because that's the rule of journalism. Mets haven't really discussed any players publicly, as they wouldn't discuss guys employed by other teams at this point, so it's all speculation.

Checking my journalism books. Can't find that rule.

I'll take three pitchers, and either a second or third baseman. I don't see first base as a position of need, and I think Lagares brings enough with his glove to justify letting him play. We need to address what killed us this year, and more than anything else that was pitching. Infield defense didn't help, but simply calling up Rosario was a boost in that regard.

I could get down with this. If the pitchers are an ace, a Wade Davis, and a lefty reliever.

Need some thump coming from 2B or 3B. Would rather avoid Moustakas.

Thump is everywhere. I'm looking for a guy with a glittery .400 OBP.
