Second Trade Deadline Deals
Frayed Knot Aug 31 2017 06:44 PM |
Today is the final day for teams to pickup players that would still be eligible for post-season play.

And the Angels then move Cameron Maybin to Houston. Mike Trout, at least, is happy.

I knew the Astros were looking for pitching so the Maybin news comes as a bit of a surprise.

Those AL WC hopefuls are grabbing whatever they can off the shelves before the stores close

Verlander to Houston!

Do we get the pleasure of facing him this weekend?

He pitched Wednesday, so it doesn't appear that he will make his 'Stros debut against us.

Yeah, about 20 minutes after I wrote above that it looked like he was staying and turned off the computer, I hear on the radio that it's a done deal. Prior to that Verlander had reportedly been wielding his no-trade powers Tigers get: - RHP Franklin Perez - a 19 y/o Venezuelan currently in High-A - Daz (son of Mike) Cameron - 1st round (37th overall) draft pick in 2015 out of HS. Started very slowly, picked it up this year in Low-A - Jake Rogers, catcher/DH, 3rd round pick out of Tulane in 2016, moved from Low-A to High-A this season Verlander is sign thru 2019 with a vesting option for 2020, the Tigers also kick in around $8 million for his salary

I put Verlander in a box with Harvey in the category of big, obnoxious righthanders who I think are from Texas but actually aren't.

The September transaction in which a contender picks up a veteran even though he won't be eligible for postseason doesn't seem to happen anymore, or at least happen much. The Mets grabbed Ron Herbel, Dean Chance, John Candelaria and Dan Schatzeder in Septembers that didn't lead to Met Octobers. The second coming of Bob L. Miller happened in September 1973. The Cardinals lunged for Doug DeCinces in the final week of his career in case they needed an extra bat to ward off the surging Mets (who failed to surge). Dave Kingman disgraced himself by donning MFY pinstripes in such a matter in a sad September. These were all long-ago moves. Can't remember it happening in a recent September.

I feel like Cabrera and me suffer the same fate: As much as we'd like our employers to move from on us, and as many co-workers as have left, we cannot be moved.

Surprised that ass-drew-bull didn't make this thread.

In 1993, the Yankees were playing badly, short on starting pitchers, but somehow hadn't yet been knocked out of the playoff picture with two weeks to go, and so they sent the Mets Kenny Greer for two starts worth of Frank Tanana. Thinking back now, I actually saw one of those starts. Might have been my last time at Yankee Stadium II. Probably next to last.

Greer gave us one perfect outing in which he got the 17th-inning win. Tanana didn't help the MFYs' desperate chase of the Blue Jays. Advantage: Mets.

You're stereotypes are fine here. Even ERA'S are bigger in Texas.

Is Kate Upton part of the Verlander deal?

I can't say I'd call Verlander obnoxious. He's pretty beloved in the Mitten. Lots of upset people today.

Some weird context in that whole shmenke is the brawl with the Yankees. The afterparty in the Tigers dugout featured Verlander nearly coming to blows with Victor Martinez. Indeed, he had to be restrained by his own teammates as Martinez seemingly gave him a whatever and walked away.

Benjamin Grimm Sep 01 2017 04:19 PM Re: Second Trade Deadline Deals |
Does he actually have to report to his team before midnight to be eligible, or is that and old rule that's no longer in effect.

Lynn was traded to Detroit in 1988 and ultimately ruled eligible for postseason, though the Tigers didn't make it that year. It was one of the weirder situations in memory.
They don't pull that nonsense anymore.

Wow, I had forgotten that Peter Ueberroth was once the Commissioner of Baseball. If I had been asked to list the Commissioners, I think I might have gone right from Bowie Kuhn to A. Bartlett Giamatti.
