Today is the final day for teams to pickup players that would still be eligible for post-season play. - on Wednesday the Cardinals dealt away pitcher Mike Leake along with part of his contract and some Int'l bonus signing cap money to the Mariners in exchange for a minor league SS Curious move as it seems to signal that the Cards are out of it while the Mariners think they're still in despite just getting steamrolled by the Orioles in their last series. - today reports have Detroit dealing Justin Upton to the Angles

I knew the Astros were looking for pitching so the Maybin news comes as a bit of a surprise. Yanx have traded for minor league catcher (and phormer Philly) Eric Kratz - although that's got more to do with both of their catchers looking at suspensions (Romine = 2 games, Sanchez = 4) than it does planning for post-season possibilities.

The September transaction in which a contender picks up a veteran even though he won't be eligible for postseason doesn't seem to happen anymore, or at least happen much. The Mets grabbed Ron Herbel, Dean Chance, John Candelaria and Dan Schatzeder in Septembers that didn't lead to Met Octobers. The second coming of Bob L. Miller happened in September 1973. The Cardinals lunged for Doug DeCinces in the final week of his career in case they needed an extra bat to ward off the surging Mets (who failed to surge). Dave Kingman disgraced himself by donning MFY pinstripes in such a matter in a sad September. These were all long-ago moves. Can't remember it happening in a recent September.

In 1993, the Yankees were playing badly, short on starting pitchers, but somehow hadn't yet been knocked out of the playoff picture with two weeks to go, and so they sent the Mets Kenny Greer for two starts worth of Frank Tanana. Thinking back now, I actually saw one of those starts. Might have been my last time at Yankee Stadium II. Probably next to last.

Greer gave us one perfect outing in which he got the 17th-inning win. Tanana didn't help the MFYs' desperate chase of the Blue Jays. Advantage: Mets. Other addenda to above: Glendon Rusch came over for Dan Murray in September of 1999, making no immediate impact but sticking around to be pretty important for a couple of years. And C.J. Nitkowski was acquired for a once-over in what was barely yet a playoff chase in earliest September 2001. There've been a few other pickups very late in the season that had nothing to do with a race; for example, the Mets took a flyer on Doc Medich in September 1977 so as to gauge his suitability prior to free agency. Aaron Harang, just four Septembers ago, washed up on our shores to get us through a pitching shortage. Ken Sanders was sold off in September 1976 to the contending Royals. Dock Ellis returned to Pittsburgh under similar expanded-roster parameters in September 1979. Joe Torre was happy to reunite with Tom Hausman in Atlanta once the Braves sent Carlos Diaz to the Mets in September 1982. The idea was to get to the postseason whether the arm in question could help once there.

Some weird context in that whole shmenke is the brawl with the Yankees. The afterparty in the Tigers dugout featured Verlander nearly coming to blows with Victor Martinez. Indeed, he had to be restrained by his own teammates as Martinez seemingly gave him a whatever and walked away. Now, the consensus seems to be that Verlander was mad that Martinez seemed more about being chummy with the Yankees than about watching his teammates' backs. Seeing that Martinez is 38, has far less equity than Verlander, and is being derided as non-teamy, you'd figure he's the guy who gets sent packing. Verlander must have waived his 5-and-dime rights, though. He could have rejected this deal. The dude is a good bet for the Hall of Fame.

Does he actually have to report to his team before midnight to be eligible, or is that and old rule that's no longer in effect. I remember a deal where Fred Lynn got traded to the Orioles, I think, on August 31, and there was a question about whether his plane would get to Baltimore (or wherever the Orioles were) before midnight.

I remember a deal where Fred Lynn got traded to the Orioles, I think, on August 31, and there was a question about whether his plane would get to Baltimore (or wherever the Orioles were) before midnight. Lynn was traded to Detroit in 1988 and ultimately ruled eligible for postseason, though the Tigers didn't make it that year. It was one of the weirder situations in memory. Lynn's suspension from postseason competition is without precedent. He was declared ineligible because the pilot of his chartered Lear Jet, on a flight that originated in Ontario, Calif., didn`t contact the tower at O'Hare International Airport until 12:10 a.m. Thursday. They don't pull that nonsense anymore.

Wow, I had forgotten that Peter Ueberroth was once the Commissioner of Baseball. If I had been asked to list the Commissioners, I think I might have gone right from Bowie Kuhn to A. Bartlett Giamatti.
