From DiComo: Addressing his status today for the first time since surgery, David Wright says he's "on a road to recovery." He intends to keep playing.

You have to admire his determination. Although it would be more accurate to phrase it as "He intends to keep trying to play." Has he already had the rotator cuff surgery? Or is it still something that's scheduled? There are so many injuries and surgeries that I can't keep track of them all.

Yeah he held a press event today with his arm in a sling. I don't get the fans who are rooting for him to retire. I get that it's a PITA to keep your hopes pinned on this guy, and of course you need an adequate offense but if David Wright wants to try to come back, who am I to say, "No, I want you to retire." He's obviously not guaranteed anything or we'd have seen him in the last few years.

I'd be pretty determined too to show up for rehab to make millions of dollars. remember, retirement = no cash (barring a settlement)

I don't care who it is, $47 million is nothing to sneeze at. I don't think he's solely in it for the money but he is human. The money he doesn't 'earn' on the field is mostly insured so he's not hurting the team per se. Knock yourself out, Cappy. Anyone who's done the same thing for an entire lifetime and the then met with the end (or the end is in sight) will tell you it is hard to just walk away.

Personally I'm done following sports when I start to adopt the mindset that I'd prefer the players not to play, the pitchers not to pitch, and the team not to win, and yet that seems to be the vibe from too many fans these days.

The players union would go nuts if he walked away and left that much on the table because it sets a precedent for other players. No one would walk away from that much money. Both sides signed a contract in good faith, and teams are aware that such an injury could happen. The Mets have a bunch of very young and very good players who make the minimum or close to it. It all balances out. More power to Wright. I hope he keeps trying and I hope he comes back.

I'm not a real Mets fan. At least, that's what internet users keep telling me for not rooting for David Wright to burn $75 million and go away. Rooting for the Mets means rooting for the insurance company, apparently. F that. David Wright struggles to do what what I cannot, and when he has done it well, he has done it nobly. Struggle on.

Seriously - playing at the MLB level can't be good for someone who has been through so much physical trauma as he has. It's not rooting against him as much as it's fear that he's going to permanently disable himself.

there's not really any evidence to suggest he's harming himself further by playing baseball. At least not more than just generally existing. He's treating the pinched nerves and in general has been shutting it down when he's in pain and can't play even when he was active. I guess you could claim that the spinal stenosis is what caused the neck herniation, but I don't think that's been stated. And the pain this year has been a complication of that injury/surgery. Perhaps there is something in David's DNA that makes him prone to these disc/spinal type conditions. I don't remember anyone discovering a specific play or trauma that might have cause the herniation, but it just as easily could've been a workout thing. Hopefully the rotator cuff surgery is successful, and the recovery is complete. He'll still have to manage the stenosis, but he proved he could do that AND hit well. I guess that's the best case.

Today's starting pitcher, for what it's worth, also suffers from a debilitative spine condition (spondylolisthesis) and is also a veteran of spinal fusion surgery that left him bedridden for several months. Play on, Seth Lugo. Rabia, rabia contra la muerte de la luz.

Seriously, I want very much for David Wright to be on the field when we win the World Series. And I want him to break the all-time Mets HR record. He's the uber-Met. I do understand the hand-wringing over financial flexibility and roster planning, but realistically, it's just a game and I want to root for the guys I like.

LF I am sure he talked to his doctors. But that doesn't mean they are altogether on the same page. I sure as hell don't do everything my doctor tells me. I don't even take half the meds they've described. Why should I? I do floss my teeth though. That advice makes sense to me :D Don't get me wrong I hope he makes it back too, but for one reason only: Because it is obvious that this boy has been working his heart out trying to make it back. I just hope he's not doing it because he thinks he can save the team. I would like to see him play again only so that his dream is answered and his hard work paid off. But I don't want to see him try to be a hero. Play a bit, then retire in safety. Please.

David Wright is a tough SOB and an uber-Met. My only concern for him is being physically disabled by the age of 50. I wouldn't want him wiped out on a force play or such.
