Biking

As you may know I did the NYC Century again on Sunday, it was a gorgeous day to ride with low heat & humidity and a nice tailwind for about 50 of the 100 and unlike last year where my bike and me were in bad shape and really struggled we worked well together this time and I'm only a little sore in the thighs today.

I would encourage everyone who likes to bike to give it a try, great way to see the city (passed near Citi as the game went on) and you might surprise yourself at what you're capable of when you have enough free pb&j and cliff bars at the rest stops. If not there are shorter alternatives.

When I got home I saw that a woman was run over by a drunk and uninsured driver on the course -- same corner me and hundreds of others had come by earlier that day. It turns out the woman who was hurt was a teacher at Lunchpail's elementary school and she was riding with one of our close friends (Lunchpail's buddy's mom) who thankfully was not hurt but badly freaked out of course. The teacher is in a coma last I heard and very badly hurt.

Ironic in that the Century is put on by Transportation Alternatives to support its political share-the-road message (Vision Zero etc) and that Century, unlike the more popular 5-Boro Bike Tour specifically does not close roads to traffic for that reason.

Hopefully TA can make some gains from this tragedy and that drivers and the city get the message already. Not that obeying the bike safety laws can be expected of someone who cannot follow DUI laws (he reportedly hit another car on his way to hitting the cyclists) but opens eyes.

Re: Biking

I bike 3-4 days a week on many of the same local roads that I run upon, including local parks. It's a great cross training option as I prefer to not run every day. I average about 30 or so miles per week. My longest ride is only about 20 miles, and I don't do much in the way of organized group rides, but it's still a nice way to enjoy the warm temperatures.

I also use it for basic errand running if I don't expect to have to carry too much -- to and from trips to the garage, Wegmans (if going for just a couple of items), and to and from the field where I play my rec league kickball games.

Re: Biking

I work two days a week at a downtown office, three days uptown. One one of those downtown days I take a CitiBike to work and a subway home. Today was one of those days. Might start doing it both days til the weather gets cold. Also, ride around a bit on the weekends.

I used to do the Five Boro Bike Tour. Biking across the Verrazano Bridge after 40 miles was exhausting on the way up and exhilarating on the way down.

Now I do a couple of miles on weekends in my town occasionally. My long-distance days are over.

Re: Biking

Lunchbucket how on earth did you bicycle to the cloisters from Brooklyn? I am still amazed!

Re: Biking

They have done a lot to improve protected lanes; 90% of the ride is along the Hudson bike path, just a straight shot!
