SunTrust Park - Atlanta

Atlanta's new home isn't a bad place to watch a game, but it was a totally unnecessary move. Turner Field was lovely, and much better located. Should the location matter? When the logistics of getting back from a game get in the way of enjoying the game experience, then it does factor in. Getting there isn't horrible - if you aren't driving then you can take an Uber of Lyft. There's a sprawling area of restaurants and other places to grab a meal before the game, which is nice. The stadium itself is fine. Yeah, there's a lot of Braves memorabilia, but it is their home. Fun fact - I never knew that Casey Stengel once managed the Boston Braves until I saw it mentioned in their team museum, which is easily accessible to all fans and is located on the field level. One cool feature is that you can borrow a glove for the game. If you like the glove, you can purchase it at a discount after the game. The seating areas are fine - nothing special, nothing terrible. The food concessions are mundane and repetitive - it's much better to grab a bite outside the park before the game. And you do have to grab your bites before the game, because after the game the lovely sprawling area of restaurants is a ghost town. Seriously - with games that don't start until 7:35, shouldn't these places stay open for a while after the games? Why is that important? Because post-game you have to deal with mob scenes. If you drive, there are huge traffic jams. If you don't drive, the walk to the designated Uber/Lyft pickup area is a total mob scene. And if you walk across the walkway to the nearby mall, the cabs that cruise by there will offer to give you a ride at a ridiculous markup (although you can haggle with them). Why didn't we take mass transit? Because it doesn't exist. There's some talk about eventually extending the transit line to the park, but it's nowhere near fruition. IOW, this park is woefully inadequate at dealing with crowds of people leaving en masse or giving them options about where to hang out while the crowds thin out a bit. I think they were in the process of building a hotel in very close proximity to the ballpark, which would be a nice option when it's open, but that will only help a small percentage of those who attend Braves games. I hope their fan base is happy with the new place, although I can't see how most people can be. Image - from July 4th pregame ceremony.

I completely missed Turner Field. The one time I went to Atlanta to see baseball was in 1992, when the Braves were still at Fulton County Stadium.

It's essentially a sales pitch from the Mizuno corp. They have a permanent location at the park where they'll not just loan you a glove for the game but also help you with advice and fitting for when you want to buy one which you can do right there at the park or they hope that the brand name will be planted in your head if you buy a glove elsewhere.

My favorite part of the new Atlanta ballpark is the museum which is built into the concourse (not an afterthought) so you have to pass it as you walk around the lower level. It highlights Henry Aaron (of course) but also the history of the franchise. Does the museum give appropriate attention to the years in Boston and Milwaukee?

I was at the Braves-Marlins game on the 20th. As far as a baseball game goes, it was pretty good. Featured 6-run innings by both teams, a grand slam, a run balked in, an outfielder smashing into a wall and, unfortunately, a walk-off win by the Braves. For $21 had a terrific seat on the second level right behind home plate next to some very nice people. Couldn't root too hard for the Marlins since (a) they're not my team and I hate them too and (b) it wouldn't be nice to get all anti-Brave next to those nice people. I would point out good plays and such for both teams but tried not to root against those guys. It's a pretty good stadium I have to say notwithstanding the fact that you can't get there by public transport. They have a real organ. The organist played the Beatles "Piggies" as well as "Aqualung."
