"If you want to know about steroids and Balco, theirs is a great book. If you want to know about the life path that leads someone to steroids, read mine."

]He first learned about the Sports Illustrated excerpt last week when Mr. Shinker "taunted me at the London Book Fair." HarperCollins is printing 100,000 copies of Mr. Pearlman's book.

Ironically enough, I'm currently reading The Making of the President 1964 which has large sections devoted to Barry Goldwater.

]At one point, in a bid to describe how many people he had interviewed, Mr. Pearlman told Mr. Bonds that he'd interviewed Mr. Bonds' Cub Scout den mother. Mr. Bonds, in a loud voice that carried through the locker room of the San Francisco Giants, replied that he'd never been in the Cub Scouts. "He's bizarre," says Mr. Pearlman.

Barry Bonds is bizarre? Tell me something I don't know.
