Beach Boys score card:

Drivin' and draggin' songs: 2
Surfin and beachin' songs: 1 ("California Girls," sort of)
Girl's name songs: 1

Definitely avoiding the formulaic Beach Boys songs, but I still would've gone for mroe Pet Sounds. But only just. Good job. "Wendy" and "Warmth of the Sun" were two of the more obscure selections on the Greatest Hits package I grew up with, so those have always been favorites.

"Sloop John B" vs. "Foxy Lady" - JIMI - John B was fun in my intro guitar class in college, but...
"Fun, Fun, Fun" vs. "Purple Haze" - JIMI
"I Get Around" vs. "Voodoo Child" - JIMI
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" vs. "Are You Experienced?" - JIMI
"God Only Knows" vs. "Hey Joe" - JIMI
"Help Me Rhonda" vs. "All Along the Watchtower" - JIMI
"California Girls" vs. "(Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire" - JIMI - finally, a BB song I like, but it runs into "Fire." Yikes.
"Sail On, Sailor" vs. "Sunshine of Your Love" - JIMI
"In My Room" vs. "Crosstown Traffic" - JIMI
"Good Vibrations" vs. "Castles Made of Sand" - JIMI

This is WAY WAY WAY too high a reach for the Beach Boys, I think. I'm sorry, but I have never been able to dig the Beach Boys, except in two instances: "Kokomo," which I loved as a kid, and when they joined the Fat Boys in the studio to cover "Wipeout".

Before The Beach Boys drown under the tsunami of the votes against them, I now hang ten to their rescue on my white surfboard...

="seawolf17"]This is WAY WAY WAY too high a reach for the Beach Boys, I think. I'm sorry, but I have never been able to dig the Beach Boys, except in two instances: "Kokomo," which I loved as a kid, and when they joined the Fat Boys in the studio to cover "Wipeout".

Too high a reach? The Beach Boys were just as, if not more, influential than Jimi was. Not saying the Beach Boys should top this whole list, but challenging the Beatles and Stones is not too high a reach for this band.

'Kokomo' is the only Beach Boys song you like? There are so many things wrong with that that I cannot even to begin to count them.

Anyways, I've always loved The Beach Boys and am almost personally insulted that 'Barbara Ann' is not included on their hit list.

"Sloop John B" vs. "Foxy Lady" -THE BEACH BOYS
"Fun, Fun, Fun" vs. "Purple Haze" -THE BEACH BOYS
"I Get Around" vs. "Voodoo Child" -THE BEACH BOYS

"In My Room" vs. "Crosstown Traffic" -THE BEACH BOYS
"Good Vibrations" vs. "Castles Made of Sand" -THE BEACH BOYS

THE BEACH BOYS - 8 / JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - 2

In addition to the aforementioned 'Barbara Ann what happened to these...?

Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, Little Deuce Coup, Catch A Wave, Be True To Your School.

More and more it is becoming apparent to me that whenever this contest ends unfortunately it will not accurately reflect my own musical tastes.

That's too bad because I'm right and you guys are wrong.

Mar 16 2006 12:02 PM

I agree that the Jimi Hendrix Experience was not too high a reach for the Beach Boys and my close vote reflected that. I was sorry not to see "Surf's Up" in there but overall I thought Lundy's choices were good. It's all about the matchups, however.

Edgy DC
Mar 16 2006 12:10 PM

Holy crap, "God Only Knows" / "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was released as a double-A-side singe and peaked only at 39. What the Hell were people buying?

Johnny Dickshot
Mar 16 2006 12:10 PM

I'll add my votes later. And while I want to echo Soupy's comments as to their appropriate reach, as well as how much I just vomited upon discovering someone thinks Kokomo is the best BB song ever, I can't believe after all that...Soup goes and votes against both 'Wouldn't it be Nice' AND 'God Only Knows'.

Holy vibrations, Batman.

Edgy DC
Mar 16 2006 12:16 PM

Yeah, I thought it was hilarious also. Soup mounts a spirited defense, but can''t bring himself to vote for the two songs that exploded their formula and showed the hidden depth that would've shown gloriously if they and their audience could have just scratched past each other's surfaces.

But Mike Love was the thin membrane that kept them apart.

Othewise great bands diminished by having huge shallow jerks for frontmen: The Beach Boys, Van Halen.

Alright alright enough from you two.

They weren't so much votes against those songs as they were votes for 'Are You Experienced' and 'Hey Joe'

I'm entitled to my opinions and those songs while groundbreaking are simply not favorites of mine. I voted for 'In My Room' and I prolly would've voted for 'Surfer Girl' had it been included.

You find me hilarious? So I amuse you? Well you and your red friggin' pants are pretty friggin' funny too.

Mar 16 2006 12:26 PM

Hey, I'm just saying I'm not a fan. I'm not saying "Kokomo" was the Greatest Beach Boys Song Ever, I'm just saying it's the first time they ever registered with me, and it never really went any farther than that. They're the only band in this competition that not only do I not own any discs from, but I have no desire to do so. I don't have any Steely Dan or ELO either, but at least some of their stuff is interesting.

I can't believe I'm having to defend my Beach Boy-iness when 1) I'm the only one who has given them a landslide victory and, 2) Did you see that I voted FOR Sloop John B (Pet Sounds)?

I know Pet Sounds, I like Wouldn't It Be Nice and In My Room, but against Are You Experienced and Hey Joe I went with the signature Hendrix tunes.

On edit I wrote this post assuming Edgy's 'Pet Sounds' recommendation was directed towards moi. I now see that that is most likely NOT the case.

I tried to keep from loading this competition with the surfin' and drivin' songs--and tried to spread it out as best I could. I even ventured into the 70s with "Sail On, Sailor" -- but I decided it was a good idea to stay away from Kokomo.

"Sloop John B" vs. "Foxy Lady”
--Gotta go with Jimi to start. SJB is near the bottom of my Pet Sounds fetishes.

"Fun, Fun, Fun" vs. "Purple Haze"
--Jimi again.

"I Get Around" vs. "Voodoo Child"
--Boys. Great single.

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" vs. "Are You Experienced?"
--Boys in a landslide.

"God Only Knows" vs. "Hey Joe"
--Boys in a tsunami.

"Help Me Rhonda" vs. "All Along the Watchtower"
--Jimi in a partly cloudy, 30% chance of rain.

"California Girls" vs. "(Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire"
--Yeow. Love ‘em both. Jimi.

"Sail On, Sailor" vs. "Sunshine of Your Love"
--One day a few years ago I came home to my apartment and Blondie Chaplin, who sings lead on SOS, was sitting there, a guest of my ex-fashion-model roommate. He was touring with the Stones then. ‘SOS’ is a leftover from Wilson & Van Dyke Parks, but not very BB-like to me. That said, it gets the edge here.

"In My Room" vs. "Crosstown Traffic"
--Chills over Thrills: Boys win.

"Good Vibrations" vs. "Castles Made of Sand"
--Boys in a meteor strike.

That makes the final: Boys 6, Experience 4

Suggestions for future BB victories (and Seawolf’s iPod… NOW!!!):

Don’t Worry Baby
Warmth of the Sun
Surf’s Up
You Still Believe in Me

Loved the harmonies on this one ... but hell, I could say that for most of their stuff

"Fun, Fun, Fun" vs. "Purple Haze" - Hendrix
Good vs Great

"I Get Around" vs. "Voodoo Child" - Beach Boys

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" vs. "Are You Experienced?" - Beach Boys
'Wouldn't it Be Nice' beats almost any entry in my book

"God Only Knows" vs. "Hey Joe" - Beach Boys
And the few it doesn't beat, this one does

"Help Me Rhonda" vs. "All Along the Watchtower" - Hendrix
This was even Dylan's favorite

"California Girls" vs. "(Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire" - Beach Boys

"Sail On, Sailor" vs. "Sunshine of Your Love" - Beach Boys

"In My Room" vs. "Crosstown Traffic" - Beach Boys

"Good Vibrations" vs. "Castles Made of Sand" - Beach Boys

8 - 2 for the Brian & the boys

"Fire", "Voodoo Child" & "Crosstown" were close to toss-up losers so this vote could have looked a lot less lopsided.
Still, an impressive showing for the surf dudes considering 'Warmth of the Sun', 'All Summer Long', 'Don't Worry Baby', 'Caroline No' , and ''I Just Wasn't Made for these Times', are still on the bench waiting for the manager's call.
