A good Steely Dan NCAA matchup would be William & Mary vs. Alabama.

They are required. We are all in this to learn and experience.

Always good to see objective voters.

Johnny Dickshot Mar 17 2006 08:08 AM |
Maybe we should have a swapping round that would separate sponsors from the bands they actually like, or, make a list of unsponsored bands and dole 'em out randomly (I disagree with this idea I just had, but perhaps it removes some of the emotional gumming-up of the contest which several of us have been guilty of recently).

No need to post GnR songs. 10-0, Steely Dan.

Yes!! More objectivity!!

cooby Mar 17 2006 03:20 PM |
Elster, I like Steely Dan an awful lot, but I know 4 or 5 GnR songs now, keep them in mind...

This attitude is boguser than not having 10 songs to vote on.

sharpie Mar 17 2006 03:30 PM |
It's been more than 24 hours since the challenge and Elster has been around. I say if he doesn't post by the end of the day it's a forfeit to Steely Dan.

There's a difference between taking two seconds to bullshit about the college games and putting a list together to hopefully get a win. Just the idea that there's a 24 hour window before a forfeit is ridiculous to me. We have a loooong time to do these challenges.

A lot of love for "Paradise City." I think that's a pretty weak track that's exactly the type of song other hair bands were putting out, that GnR was eclipsing --- but they were so damn hot that another single was needed.
|
Johnny Dickshot Mar 17 2006 06:18 PM |
I agree -- not with the stage costume comment, although I agree with that too -- but that "Paradise City" was a just a 'bleh' song from an album that for the most part was a giant step ahead of the hair-metal jokes of the time.

sharpie Mar 20 2006 12:22 PM |
Elster, you shouldn't abstain. You sponsored the band we expect it to be somewhat lopsided. Plus, Lundy voted.
|

Okay, I actually took three Steely Dan discs out of the library this weekend to give them a fighting chance.

Here goes... "Sweet Child O' Mine" vs. "My Old School" --GNR "November Rain" vs. "Peg" -- GNR "Paradise City" vs. "Don't Take Me Alive" -- GNR "Welcome to the Jungle" vs. "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" -- GNR "You Could Be Mine" vs. "Babylon Sisters" -- GNR "Don't Cry" vs. "Deacon Blues" -- GNR "Civil War" vs. "Hey Nineteen" -- GNR "Mr. Brownstone" vs. "Reeling in the Years"-- GNR "Patience" vs. "Doctor Wu" -- GNR Gunners 10, Steelers 0 Luckily the lead is enough that Steely should pull it out.

D'oh. That actually may turn the tide combined with seawolf. Doesn't really seem fair for two guys to flip the result.

What a turnaround!! From 48-32 to 49-61 in 17 minutes! Fagan and Becker are looking winded out there!
|
abogdan Mar 20 2006 01:32 PM |
I couldn't hum a Steely Dan song if I tried. Those song names mean nothing to me. If I can vote, it would be an easy 10-0 for GnR. But I thought there was some unwritten rule about not voting if you didn't know at least 6 of the songs, so I stayed out of it.
|
Edgy DC Mar 20 2006 01:42 PM |
Do your bad self a favor and check some of them out. We're gonna break out the hats and hooters
|
Lundy Mar 20 2006 01:48 PM |
Steely Dan still has a big lead in number of scorecards won, but is behind in total song votes.

sharpie Mar 20 2006 01:51 PM |
We don't go by the Electoral College here.
|
Lundy Mar 20 2006 02:21 PM |
Right. The tallies at the end of each scorecard detailing which band prevailed are, for all intents and purposes, meaningless.

Whew! Glad someone brought some sense to the table at the end there. The early part of the thread (which I'll cop to not reading until today) looked suspiciously like it was going to overlook the fact that Sweet Child o' Mine *and* Paradise City are each better than any 2 Steely Dan songs. That's gotta be worth some extra credit.
|
soupcan Mar 21 2006 10:08 PM |
I just can't believe the support that Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith are getting in this whole thing.
|
metirish Mar 21 2006 10:14 PM |
Guns I can understand, I love them, one of the best concerts I ever saw was Guns at Slane Castle in 1992...supported by Faith No More and Four Non Blondes and a bunch of Iirsh rockers.....

Edgy DC Mar 21 2006 10:41 PM |

"Paradise City" is beneath Steely Dan's standards and beneath the otherwise high standard that Guns 'n Roses were setting. The double-timing on the verse, though hardly relevatory, is the only thing that distinguishes it from being a Poison song. The stoopit one-line chorus repeated over and over is beneath the standard of AC/DC on a bad day.
