A good Steely Dan NCAA matchup would be William & Mary vs. Alabama.

"My Old School"

"Oh, no, William and Mary won't do
Well, I did not think the girl could be so cruel
And I'm never going back to my old school"
"Peg"

"I've got your picture
I keep it with your letter"
"Don't Take Me Alive"

"Can you hear the evil crowd?
The lies and the laughter?
I hear my inside
The mechanized hum of another world
Where no sun is shining
No red light flashing
Here in this darkness"
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number"

"Ricki don't lose that number
It's the only one you own.
You might use it if you feel better,
When you get home.
(Duh-duh, duh-duh, duh-duh, duh-duh)"
"Babylon Sisters"

"Babylon sister..... SHAKE IT!"
"Deacon Blues"

"I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet"
"Hey Nineteen"

"Hey, nineteen, that's 'Retha Franklin
You don't remember the Queen of Soul"
"Reeling In The Years"

"You wouldn't know a diamond
If you held it in your hand
The things you think are precious
I can't understand"
"Doctor Wu"

"Katy lied
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in..."
"Aja"

"Aja, dah, dah-dah, dah, dah dah..."
Now go.

Maybe we should have a swapping round that would separate sponsors from the bands they actually like, or, make a list of unsponsored bands and dole 'em out randomly (I disagree with this idea I just had, but perhaps it removes some of the emotional gumming-up of the contest which several of us have been guilty of recently).

At any rate, let's move it along. Give us 10 GnR tunes... NOW!!!!

There's a difference between taking two seconds to bullshit about the college games and putting a list together to hopefully get a win.

Just the idea that there's a 24 hour window before a forfeit is ridiculous to me.

"Sweet Child O' Mine"vs."My Old School" -- GNR
My Fave GnR song

"November Rain"vs."Peg” -- GnR
Even though it got horribly oveplayed by the radio when it was out

"Paradise City"vs."Don't Take Me Alive" -- DAN
I liked Paradise City, but who else but the Dan would write a song about a hostage situation?

"Welcome to the Jungle"vs."Rikki Don't Lose That Number" -- GNR
Great Mayhem vs mediocre Dan

"You Could Be Mine"vs."Babylon Sisters" Tie

"Don't Cry (original lyrics)"vs." Deacon Blues" -- DAN

"Civil War"vs."Hey Nineteen" -- Tie

"Mr. Brownstone"vs."Reeling in the Years" -- DAN
Whoda thunk Steely Dan would win for a guitar song

"Patience"vs."Doctor Wu" -- DAN
Patience would win several other matchups, just not this one

"Estranged" vs."Aja" -- DAN
Angular banjos always sounded good to me

Dan 6 -- GnR 4

Tough luck for Paradise & Patience; they would have won different matchups.
Also, I just don't know that Axl and the boys have a big enough catalog; strong top 5, much weaker second 5.
On the other hand, any Dan list has GOTTA include 'Kid Charlemagne' (IMHO of course)

A lot of love for "Paradise City." I think that's a pretty weak track that's exactly the type of song other hair bands were putting out, that GnR was eclipsing --- but they were so damn hot that another single was needed.

Plus Axl's all-white video getup made him look like a loser Miami Vice villian:

Johnny Dickshot
Mar 17 2006 06:18 PM

I agree -- not with the stage costume comment, although I agree with that too -- but that "Paradise City" was a just a 'bleh' song from an album that for the most part was a giant step ahead of the hair-metal jokes of the time.

They say Nirvana killed hair-metal dead but not before 'Appetite for Destruction' wounded it very, very badly. It was such a departure it took months to hit -- and when it did, the hit machine seemed to want to market them the same as the hair guys of the day: That's pretty much the formula "3rd single" video of the metal-era right there.

"Paradise City" is beneath Steely Dan's standards and beneath the otherwise high standard that Guns 'n Roses were setting. The double-timing on the verse, though hardly relevatory, is the only thing that distinguishes it from being a Poison song. The stoopit one-line chorus repeated over and over is beneath the standard of AC/DC on a bad day.
