BLC: Fuck the Queen! Pogues v. Beatles

Rotblatt

Oh, sure NOW you'll call it a mismatch, but when you're drunk at that "authentic" Irish pub at 2:00 in the morning, hoping desperately that the drunk sorority girl will kiss YOU next, you'll vote Pogues.

1. Fairytale Of New York
2. A Pair of Brown Eyes
3. If I Should Fall From Grace With God
4. Fiesta
5. Streams Of Whiskey
6. Rain Street
7. The Sunnyside Of The Street
8. Boys From The County Hell
9. The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

I've been waiting weeks for my turn to come around again so I could introduce the Pogues. Sometimes I think my turn will never come again (because I'm a man of little patience) so thanks to Rotty for getting them in the contest.

Bring on the Beatles!

OE: Of course I could have just gone out of order too, I guess.

One more reason Rotty's motion shouldn't count --- grabbing bands before guys ahead of him in line.

If this goes through, the lineup is below. If Willets objects, I say can it.

The Poguesvs.=red]The Beatles

"Fairytale Of New York "vs."Help!"
"A Pair of Brown Eyes "vs."A Day in the Life" "
"If I Should Fall From Grace With God "vs."Strawberry Fields Forever"
"Fiesta "vs."Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
"Streams Of Whiskey "vs."Dear Prudence"
"Rain Street "vs."You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"
"The Sunnyside Of The Street"vs."She Said, She Said"
"Boys From The County Hell "vs."Here Comes the Sun"
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda "vs."A Hard Day's Night"
"Whiskey In The Jar"vs."Ticket to Ride"

No objection, I'm just happy the Pogues are in on St. Patrick's Day.

Heck, I'll even start the voting.

"Fairytale Of New York " vs. "Help!" The Pogues
"A Pair of Brown Eyes " vs. "A Day in the Life" The Pogues
"If I Should Fall From Grace With God " vs. "Strawberry Fields Forever" The Beatles
"Fiesta " vs. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" The Beatles
"Streams Of Whiskey " vs. "Dear Prudence" The Pogues (WTF Edgy, it's like you want the Beatles to lose)
"Rain Street " vs. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" The Beatles
"The Sunnyside Of The Street" vs. "She Said, She Said" The Pogues
"Boys From The County Hell " vs. "Here Comes the Sun" The Beatles
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda " vs. "A Hard Day's Night" The Pogues
"Whiskey In The Jar" vs. "Ticket to Ride" The Beatles

I had half a mind to include the 12-second Beatle classic, "Oh, Danny Boy, the Ulstermen are Calling."

"Her Majesty" would have been appropos with the Fuck the Queen sentiments.

Here are the Beatles showing off their MBE's they got from their pal the Queen.

Thanks, WP! I'm sorry about stealing your thunder--I took a quick look this morning and didn't see any claims made on them, but I probably missed it.

You want joint custody?

Fuck the Queen? Why yes, yes I do.

I'm worried that, like the Velvet Underground contests, voting will be suppressed because the Pogues' catalog is not as generally known as many of the others.

soupcan
Mar 17 2006 01:47 PM

Yer right.

I know of the Pogues, I've even seen 'em, but I know only 2 of those songs.

That being said I can't see myself not going Beatles anyway.

Rotblatt
Mar 17 2006 01:49 PM

Yeah, I gotta find a more mainstream band to champion.

King Crimson's probably not going to cut it, huh?

sharpie
Mar 17 2006 01:51 PM

They would with me, but so do the Pogues and the Velvets so maybe I'm not your target audience.

Edgy DC

"Fairytale Of New York " vs. "Help!"

Tie.

"A Pair of Brown Eyes " vs. "A Day in the Life" "

Tie.

"If I Should Fall From Grace With God " vs. "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Pogues

"Fiesta " vs. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"

Tie

"Streams Of Whiskey " vs. "Dear Prudence"

Beatles

"Rain Street " vs. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"

Crushing blow by the Beatles

"The Sunnyside Of The Street" vs. "She Said, She Said"

Beatles

"Boys From The County Hell " vs. "Here Comes the Sun"

Beatles

"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda " vs. "A Hard Day's Night"

Now we're in cover territory, and I don't feel as much loyalty. Beatles.

"Whiskey In The Jar" vs. "Ticket to Ride"

Same. Beatles.

The Pogues get a spot but the Beatles roar back. Liverpool 7.5, London 2.5.

Edgy DC

Still on the board.

Beatles, probably damn-near as Irish as the Pogues, the difference being Sir Paul's Sir-ness.

The amazon clips aren't playing for me and the iTunes gives me only 3 -- so you can score this a 3-0 Beatles victory from me, or 10-0 -- your choice.

I think this is worthy as an introduction but don't feel like an Irish folk band ought to be able to take down the Beatles because so few recognize their songs.

sharpie
Mar 20 2006 02:03 PM

Johnny --- While you were at Tower increasing your Irish music collection you should've picked up "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash" and "If I Should Fall From Grace With God."

True, Liverpool is basically an Irish colony.

Yeah, well I scored 3 Van Morrison discs: Astral Weeks, Moondance (only $7.99) and Best Of... (just 9.99).

As I was telling Sharpie at liunch, VM's one of those guys who I know more songs of than song titles or album chronology, etc. I knew whn "Into the Mystic" landed as a top-10 song for tasteful, public-airwave-supporting adults and I didn't immediately know how it went, it was time to learn more. And also, that a great Van Morrison song closed the last season of the Sopranos but I didn't know the title.

As I learned yesterday evening: I do know 'Into the Mystic' and the Soprano's song was 'Glad Tidings.'

PS We have 1 Pogues record at home -- Waiting for Herb, which may not even qualify for this contest since it doesn't include their alcoholic leader.

"Fairytale Of New York " vs. "Help!" - Beatles
"A Pair of Brown Eyes " vs. "A Day in the Life" - Beatles
"If I Should Fall From Grace With God " vs. "Strawberry Fields Forever" -Beatles
"Fiesta " vs. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" - Beatles
"Streams Of Whiskey " vs. "Dear Prudence" - Beatles
"Rain Street " vs. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" - Beatles
"The Sunnyside Of The Street" vs. "She Said, She Said" - Pogues Hey! This one's a little bit catchy!
"Boys From The County Hell " vs. "Here Comes the Sun" - Beatles
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda " vs. "A Hard Day's Night" - Beatles
"Whiskey In The Jar" vs. "Ticket to Ride" - Beatles

And that's a 9-1 win for the Greatest Band Ever.

Edgy DC
Mar 20 2006 02:28 PM

"Glad Tidings" is a great song, though the least known/played song on that album. Someday, a fourth-wave ska band will cover it and turn it into an instant Christmas classic.

I went Beatles, but the Pogues are so much more than an Irish folk band. They're as much Clash as the Dubliners (and the Dubs are some'at more than an Irish folk band also), and Shane himself is probably more Sex Pistols than Clash. I give them much praise even as I had trouble looking at their frontman last week.

Rent the DVD of the Shane McGowan documentary If I Should Fall from Grace NOW!!!!

I said NOW!!!! kid!

OE: I just bought Waiting for Herb --- $20 import. Grrr.

"Glad Tidings" showed up on an ipod shuffle of mine yesterday when I had to run out to the grocery store. It always makes me happy when that song shows up.

This is not how the contest works.

Mar 21 2006 09:54 AM

Agreed, it's important that we vote songs and not brands.

sharpie
Mar 21 2006 01:27 PM

It's a final.

Either 35.5-24.5 Beatles or 45.5-24.5 depending on whether Chuck's pro forma vote counts. Either way, Beatles win.

Well, my plan to upset the Fab Four by capitlizing on St. Paddy's Day failed, but it was a battle worth fighting.

Wait til next year, Edgy.
