BLC: They Might Be Giants vs. Led Zeppelin

Willets Point
Mar 21 2006 03:12 PM

This is probably suicidal, but why not aim high? It should be good for laughs at least.

Here's my list:

Don’t Let’s Start
She’s An Angel
Ana Ng
Birdhouse In Your Soul
Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Particle Man
Statue Got Me High
James K. Polk
Doctor Worm
Boss of Me

Well, a reason not to aim high is to have a better chance of winning and moving up.

Some clips'll help. I don't know the last four.

They're on the shortlist. In fact, why the hell did I cut "New York City"?

Regardless, it looks like Led Zep is quivering in their boots.

I'm a Giants fan (in football too as it happens) and I hate to do it to them...and you. but here you go:

I'm removing "Going To California", "'Stairway" and "Down by The Seaside" and adding the lesser known tune "Somethin' Else" which is a likable little ditty, "Since I've Been Loving You" and I'm bringing back "Traveling Riverside Blues"

Im a huge fan of both- but the music is so different this is no easy gig.
Those TMBG songs are classic.
But Zepp is the best metal band EVER!

I have all the TMBG songs rite on the drive, and they are fresh in my memory.
Im gonna have to give some of those Zepp tunes a re-listening.

This is like comparing South Park with Lord Of The Rings. Tuff gig.

I did.

It seemed in the last matchup that some people are just sick of it and voted against it just because of that.

I like 'Stairway' although this whole BLC thing is really forcing me to revisit a lot of classic tuneage and I'm finding things I haven't heard in a long time that I really like.

="Edgy DC"]I didn't know they had cut "Something Else." Was it something they did often live?

No idea. Unfortunately I never saw them live. I've only heard it on that BBC album. I love it when they do that Jerry Lee Lewis type shit with the manic pounding on the piano.

Look... the Giants write lovely, catchy, quirky pop tunes. And soup's taking a huuuuuuge risk taking changing his lineup. But let's get real here. Tough losses for "Birdhouse" and "Istanbul," but this one's a no-contest in my mind. 9-1 Greatest Hard Rock Band Ever.

This is a surprise to me as I look at my CD collection and I own like the entire original Zep catalog (from Led Zeppelin to Coda, but not the live album --- does anybody dislike laughter?), but only one They Might Be Giants CDEP. I like boogie bouncy Zep more than bloozy ballzy Zep, so the chips fell where they fell.

First of all, the dis of Aerosmith is unforgivable. However, I think you have a favorable matchup here, because I don't like soup's choices. Problem is, you're missing some great songs (Snail Shell, I Palindrome I, Boat of Car, Older), plus you completely ignored the "No!" album, which kicks ass.

For what it's worth, let's take a quick spin through GoogleFight and see how "Particle Man" really turns out:

Triangle Man def. Particle Man
Universe Man def. Triangle Man

Looks like they only got it half right.

One of the funniest songs ever.

"Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" has the most iconic bridge ever.

You can be in a Cyppriot prison, unable to communicate with your cellmate, but then you say, "Memo to myself," and damned if he won't respond "Do the dumb things I gotta do."

The Might Be Giants are the finest band ever to come out of Brooklyn which has to count for something in my book. Fans of Little Anthony and the Imperials or Public Enemy might disagree, however.

Edgy DC
Mar 22 2006 10:02 AM

Well, all three challenge the defintion of band, and TMBG challenges the definition of "from Brooklyn."

I thought Flava Flav had Freeport, LI roots or something. Living Color wold probably try to claim that mantle.

Willets Point
Mar 22 2006 10:57 AM

TMBG are from the Boston suburbs (Lincoln, MA - hence the title of their second album) and settled in Brooklyn as adults.

Thanks for the song suggestions they will be considered for future rounds.

I actually probably would have voted more in Led Zep's favor but "The Immigrant Song", "Since I've Been Loving You," and "Houses of the Holy" are all "eh!" to me, and the 30-second sample of "Something Else" didn't impress me. Put in "When the Levee Breaks," "The Ocean," "Kashmir," and "Over the Hills and Far Away" and TMBG would probably be crushed. This is not to criticize Soupy's choices - the songs he selected are certainly like by others - I'm just explaining my own voting.
