Talking Heads use some of their bench strength (3 brand new songs!):

Girlfriend Is Better
Life During Wartime
Burning Down the House
Cities
Psycho Killer
Take Me to the River
Stay Up Late
Road to Nowhere
Once in a Lifetime
Slippery People

9-1 Heads
No contest, fellas.

RealityChuck
Mar 22 2006 11:32 AM

8-2 Heads. Good placement is the only reason the Pretenders (not a particularly good group overall) gets the two.

Johnny Dickshot
Mar 22 2006 11:38 AM

not a particularly good group overall

Blasphemy.

Can you guys, for the good of the contest, at least indicate your Pretenders winners? Thanks.

Talking Heads covered all those Led Zep songs?

Fix that before the anti-Zep (or are they anti-soup?) faction blows the Talking Heads into oblivion.

Well, sheesh, I deleeted it in 20 seconds.

Sorry about that. The pasteover didn't take so well.

Good matchup this.

I was distracted by the argument about non-itemized receipts..

Some good thematic matchups:

"My City Was Gone" vs. "Cities"

"Kid" vs. "Stay Up Late"

The could've done a sixties soul smackdown with "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" vs. "Take Me to the River"

I really like the Pretenders, but the Heads win these matchups.
I would have voted for "I'll Stand By You" if it was an option - that's a beautiful song.

"Show Me" vs. "Girlfriend Is Better"

Pretenders, with Heads-like guitar funk on the chorus.

"Stop Your Sobbing" vs. "Life During Wartime"
Thin edge to the Heads

"Mystery Achievement" vs. "Burning Down the House"
Pretenders "Burning" is the Heads' "Every Breath You Take." It was the lead single from their biggest album, so it looms disproportionately large.

"My City Was Gone" vs. "Cities"
Pretenders

"Middle of the Road" vs. "Psycho Killer"
Pretenders

"Message of Love" vs. "Take Me to the River"
Tie.

"Kid" vs. "Stay Up Late"
Pretenders

"Don’t Get Me Wrong" vs. "Road to Nowhere"
Heads

"Brass in Pocket" vs. "Once in a Lifetime"
Heads

"Back on the Chain Gang" vs. "Slippery People"
Pretenders

The Pretenders take it 6 1/2 - 3 1/2. They've had a longtime problem maintaining a lineup to keep them consistently band-like, rather than just Chrissy and guys she has backing her, but Dickshot concentrated on the early records and original lineup. Every contest was close, but I think I frequently giave rock a tiebreaking edge over funk here. Way to choose both sides of the double-A single "Back on the Chaing Gang"/"My City Was Gone" --- the only work from the Billy Bremner lineup that never got to flourish.

For the record, as it were, my 1 vote for the Pretenders was for "chain gang". I almost considered "show me" for a tie, but it didn't seem worth the effort.

i have absolutely no idea what Edgy is talking about.
but it's not the first time, and won't be the last.

Talking Heads 5.5, Pretenders 4.5

As you vote, consider: One of these bands has an incredible rock vocalist and one of them, to put it very kindly, doesn’t.

"Show Me" vs. "Girlfriend Is Better"
-- Don’t make me live without it. Pretenders

"Stop Your Sobbing" vs. "Life During Wartime"
-- Heads. One of the best cover songs in rock-history is out-matchuped here.

"Mystery Achievement" vs. "Burning Down the House"
-- Listen to Crissy moaning over that killer bassline: Sex and sex and sex and sex. Big win over a tough opponent. ‘Mystery Achievement’ should be everybody’s favorite song.

"My City Was Gone" vs. "Cities"
--Heads.

"Middle of the Road" vs. "Psycho Killer"
--Pretenders. This one rocks my socks off and frequently, my pants.

"Message of Love" vs. "Take Me to the River"
--Look it up: The Crane Pool’s best song of 1981. Pretenders.

"Kid" vs. "Stay Up Late"
--Good thematic contest: Going with purity over irony here. Pretenders.

"Don’t Get Me Wrong" vs. "Road to Nowhere"
--Tie.

"Brass in Pocket" vs. "Once in a Lifetime"
--This is like the heavyweight matchup. Heads.

"Back on the Chain Gang" vs. "Slippery People"
--Pretenders

Pretenders 6.5, Heads 3.5

I like the Pretenders well enough, they were a good band, I don't turn off their songs on the radio and they'll probably win future contests on my behalf but they weren't nearly the band Talking Heads were.

The Pretenders are a great classic four-piece rock lineup with a great vocalist. Most of the competing material here comes from the great two first albums before the guitarist and bassist died. Chrissy twice re-built them into other great four-piece lineups, before finally yielding in the late eighties and letting the brand dissolve into rotating-door membership.

The Heads, on the other hand, feature a bassist forced into the role and taught on the spot because she was the drummer's girlfriend, a bassist who is constantly covered up for by session players on recordings. Their best albums feature (1) a lineup augmented by King Crimson members throughout, and (2) a lineup augmentd by Bernie Worrell and his funky friends througtout.

Look at Stop Makin' Sense, a fantastic perfromance document. But it's a story of a four-piece band of white folk, pushed over the top into excellence as they bring out the black supporting musicians, (back-up singers Edna Holt and Lynn Mabry (The Brides of Funkenstein), Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, and guitarist Alex Weir.

This isn't to denigrate the Heads. I loved and love them. Whence I was young, I tooled around in a car named "Swamp," after the Talking Heads song. I only mean to point out that as to the charge of who is pretending, the Pretenders are a lot cleaner the Heads.

That's not even getting into the art of composition, in which David Byrne always had absurdism to fall back on --- a tool which is sometimes a revelation, other times a copout, but a copout Chrissie Hynde never took.

sharpie
Mar 23 2006 09:55 AM

There's something wrong with composition?

There's something wrong with changing musical direction or augmenting musicians? By the time of the white album, the four Beatles were rarely all on the same track. Keith Richard played Bill Wyman's bass parts on many of the Stones albums (Keith: We have Bill around to play bass on stage). The Pretenders, as I said earlier, were a good little group who made a couple of good albums early on and then sounded the same for years and years.

Edgy DC
Mar 23 2006 10:03 AM

No, there's something wrong with laying the literal label of "pretenders" on the Pretenders.

Vic Sage
Mar 23 2006 05:03 PM

Your defense of the Pretenders (not that they need one) is mostly about their performance, which i would concede for the sake of argument, because i really wasn't talking abou that. I am talking about the songs themselves.

That you would even bother to compare Pretenders songs to the output of David Byrne is... well... simply hilarious to me. I understand you disagree.

As for the "pretenders" thing... it was a joke. i don't think they're any less or more real than any other band.

Johnny Dickshot
Mar 23 2006 05:12 PM

This contest is about breaking down whatever embedded brand image might make one say "even bother to compare..." yyybbb.

Every song has a punchers chance.. give it.

Vic Sage
Mar 23 2006 05:42 PM

YO ADRIENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE!

Its not about "brand name" anything, mr. shot. It's about the superiority of Mr. Byrne as a songwriter to the band with which you are comparing him.

Like i said, a 9-1 decision. And most of the forum agrees, so far.

Yeah, yeah, and you haven't itemized a ballot yet. And the majority has. A declariation of superiority does not constitute a song-by-song consideration.

It's 60.5-39.5. Throw out the non-itemized ballots and it's 43.5-36.5.
