Edgy DC

Looking to claim the top rung with:

"Help!"
"Revolution"
"A Day in the Life"
"Strawberry Fields Forever"
"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
"Paperback Writer"
"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"
"She Said, She Said"
"A Hard Day's Night"
"Ticket to Ride"

Now this is a challenge.

Willets Point

9 Stones originals:

Paint it Black
Let’s Spend the Night Together
Sympathy for the Devil
Gimme Shelter
Midnight Rambler (Live)
No Expectations
Wild Horses
Street Fighting Man
Shattered

And just for shits & giggles, a Lennon-McCartney composition:
I Wanna Be Your Man

Picayune question: Does the silly "must challenge another band prior to a rematch challenge" rule apply to the winner and/or loser here? The way I see this going, we'll have lots of tight 2, 3 and 4-band pileups where movement is restricted.

Willets Point
Mar 23 2006 10:21 AM

Dunno. I'm pretty much going to accept the winner of this matchup as final and won't challenge the Beatles if the Stones lose.

Edgy DC
Mar 23 2006 10:21 AM

Well, the rule is "must have another victory before demanding a rematch." It can be a defensive victory

The reason I suggest the rule (and the other silly one, "no challenging above a band that has defeated you") is to reduce less-than-serious challenges. This forum is already turning into the BLC forum as it is. Else, I can have the Heartbreakers rechallenge the Stones every other day just hoping to get lucky sometime after peeps get tired of voting against me, ignore the thread, and I eventually win the war of attrition 16-14.

We're deciding big questions. There must be gravity.

Going in, I'm thinking, "Good lineup by Willets, but, well, that 'Ticket to Ride'/'I Wanna Be Your Man' matchup should swing my way," and here we are tied 1-1-1 on that one.

Nothing is predictable here in the BLC.

"Help!"vs."Paint it Black" Stones
"Revolution"vs."Let’s Spend the Night Together" Beatles
"A Day in the Life"vs."Sympathy for the Devil" Beatles
"Strawberry Fields Forever"vs."Gimme Shelter" My favorite songs by each of these bands. Tie
"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"vs."Midnight Rambler (Live)" Beatles. Big win.
"Paperback Writer"vs."No Expectations" Beatles. A rare Paul-song sighting.
"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"vs."Wild Horses" Stones. "You've Got to..." is one of my least favorite John ballads. Bad Dylan.
"She Said, She Said"vs."Street Fighting Man" Beatles. George's lead intro is one of the most exciting things I've ever heard.
"A Hard Day's Night""vs."Shattered" Stones (I tend to vote for songs I've parodied) - though I do love Hard Day's Night also.
"Ticket to Ride"vs."I Wanna Be Your Man" Beatles. Stupid Stones choice - John + Paul tossed this one off in half an hour sitting on a couch backstage 'cause Mick asked them to write a song for him. Bob Dylan sort of covered it as well.

Beatles 6.5

Maybe "I Wanna Be Your Man" has female appeal as Cooby and Scarlett voted for it. I don't understand the vote, however. "Ticket to Ride" is a masterpiece.

The Beatles version is better but still...

In an interview they asked John what he thought about "With a Little Help From My Friends" and he said "well, we gave it to Ringo to sing so that's saying something."

I always thought "When I'm 64" would have been an ideal Ringo selection for Sgt Pepper. Similarly, he should have sung "Honey Pie" on The Beatles instead of "Good Night."

This was tough.

Nothing to do with the Stones but I've just been reminded of it::

There is a great deleted scene on the Pulp Fiction DVD. Vincent and Mia have a conversation when Vincent comes to pick her up prior to going to Jackrabbit Slim's. Mia asks Vince if he is a 'Beatles Man' or an 'Elvis Man', because, as she proceeds to explain, EVERYONE is one or the other, not both. Vincent, as it turns out, is of course an Elvis Man. In the next scene which is included in the movie, when Vincent questions the type of place they are going to eat, she replies that an Elvis Man will love it.

Elster88

The most recent Pulp Fiction release is excellent. It's a two disc set. Included is one subtitle track with information along the lines of "Pop-Up Video".

Plus, in my head, Ticket to Ride is corrupted by The Carpenters' cover version.

Now Ticket to Ride is going through my head. Beatles, thankfully

Edgy DC
Mar 23 2006 12:15 PM

So because a cut-rate Beatles track beats a top-shelf Carpenters track, it works against the Beatles in this contest. Circles within circles...

sharpie
Mar 23 2006 12:16 PM

I think you meant a top-shelf Beatles track and a cut-rate Carpenters track.

Edgy DC
Mar 23 2006 12:24 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Mar 23 2006 01:45 PM

Well, no, if I'm reading the circles right in the heads of voters, a cut-rate Beatles track ("I Wanna Be Your Man") is superior to a top-shelf Carpenters track ("Ticket to Ride"), so it's counting against the Beatles in the actual contest of a top-shelf Beatles track ("Ticket to Ride") against a near-cut-rate Stones track ("I Wanna Be Your Man").

I don't want to complain. Peeps vote for all sorts of reasons (Soupcan, based on the soundtrack of his sex life, for instance), but it sure reveals Willets Point as a genius.

That's pretty cool.

Gimme a nugget or two of something I didn't know...

Elster88
Mar 23 2006 12:47 PM

Can't remember any off the top of my head. I'd have to watch it again. And I will.

Edit: Ohh, here's a good one.

The guy who plays the bartender in the scene right after Marcellius gives Butch the bribe was originally going to play Jules. He was actually promised the part verbally. But Samuel L. Jackson was convinced by someone (not remembering who) to read once more, and he read the diner scene from the end of the movie. He "blew them away", as they say in Hollywood, and was given the part.

I'm sooooo glad they convinced him to come back and read for the part again. The movie wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Maybe this should go in a Pulp Fiction thread on the movie forum.

Did you actually go through and compare the individual songs in each matchup and pick a matchup winner?

Or did you just say to yourself, "I like the Beatles better, so they win each matchup".

One of these methods is correct. The other is not.
