>>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

Well we made it through another long offseason, including the astonishing Harvey Trade, and we officially welcome a bunch of new Mets and that new manager.

It's deGrom v. Carlos Martinez. It's 42 degrees, cloudy, damp and windy. Let's play ball!

Heck no! It's 75 and sunny!! And we have ourselves a new stud starter that we never even heard of in 2017. And all new trainers! Guys who recognize baseball players as stringy instead of muscle bound!

With Conforto himself downplaying Opening Day hopes less than a week ago, I think it's a smarter assumption that he'll be out.

The lineup certainly matches up with the Cards a lot better with Conforto in the cleanup spot and Smitty knocked down to sixth.

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

What I like about that lineup, illustrated as such, is that it reminds us that our incumbent 2B has posted OPS's of .788 and .795. He's hit 16 and 18 HR's respectively, on a part time basis. And he's only 26.

I am all for upgrading this offense, especially if it costs only money. But before we start giving away valuable chips in a trade for Cesar Hernandes, let's make sure we are actually upgrading first.

Well, it's what opening day looks like now. But it's likely not what they'll look like through the season, f'd or not.

Three dudes look to open on the DL: Conforto, Rivera, and Wright. The first will likely be available within the first month, the second perhaps in the second month, the third, um ...

Well he hadn't even started the next step yet anyway, it was just the company line. was 4-6 months if I recall, and I think that took him to mid March? Of course there could be minor setbacks but it just seems they're playing it slow until they have more info and know how he's feeling and how full a Spring he gets. But Opening Day is outside the recovery window.

This shouldn't be that big a deal. Gonzalez falls on his face and after a month he's gone. Or maybe he becomes a pinch-hitter and if he continues to hack, is gone after a second month.

I'm still treating it like a grave choice. Maybe the plan all along is to treat him as a backup. I don't know, but until I hear otherwise, I think the Mets have bumped him to the top.

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

I don't know if this is the opening day lineup, but it's weird. Reyes over Flores is certainly a stronger choice in theory at second. But the lineup doesn't particularly seem to shake out stronger. Not ideally, anyhow. The manager is perhaps tempted to shoehorn Reyes into his old leadoff position, dropping Nimmo or Cabrera into the middle of the lineup. I chose Cabrera, but neither is the way you really want it.

Maybe things may line up better if and when another infielder comes along, but I certainly prefer keeping Nimmo up top as long as he is in the lineup.

[fimg=200]http://offload.uni.watch/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/13094922/Screen-shot-2015-07-15-at-3.12.33-PM.png[/fimg]

Maybe d'Arnaud tears it up in the spring, and he's the #5 batter, with Nimmo and Cabrera at the top of the lineup and Reyes seventh. I can work with that.

If the Cardinals signed Dave Kingman to play first, they could have a DeJong to Wong to Kong double-play.

The 15-day forecast, avatar of long-range reliability, has weather in ZIP Code 11368 on March 27 as rainy with a high of 48 degrees. Perhaps it's the harbinger of a warming trend that will manifest itself two afternoons later and stabilize across the first homestand.

But otherwise, March 29 takes place in March, and this March, to date, has been crummy around here.

Callaway confirms the plan is Thor on OD, Jake in Game Two. Should health and nature cooperate, Thor coming in with 30.1 IP the season before will be the lightest load for an OD starter since Johan in 2012 coming off not pitching in MLB at all in 2011. Before that, I'm guessing, it's Randy Jones, 1982, who pitched 59.1 IP in 1981, a year when Randy was injured and the season was halved. Plus I believe he got OD only because postponement due to snow wrecked Bamberger's plans.

I wonder if Td'A or Plawecki will end up being a question? Neither has made their mark against Martinez. Travis is 1-6 (single, RBI, and 2 K's) and Plaweck is 0-3. As of today, I'm guessing Travis does get the start? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You'd have to think Travis for now. As good as Plawecki has been this spring, Travis has been even better. Both are hitting .333 but Travis is OPS-ing higher.

As for Gonzalez, I am encouraged by the reports on Conforto. We may not have to tolerate him for long. If Nimmo (or Lagares) end up being real, then I see this happening pretty soon:

1. Nimmo CF
2. Conforto RF
3. Cespedes LF
4. Bruce 1B
5. Frazier 3B
6. Cabrera 2B
7. d'arwecki C
8. Rosario SS

Well, we won't be seeing Adam Wainwright during the opening series: to the DL with a hamstring strain.
Of course this isn't as big an advantage in recent years as it would once was seeing as how the now-36 y/o Wainwright (37 in August) hasn't had a good and full season since 2014.
He made just 4 starts in 2015, and while he made 33 & 23 in 2016-17, his ERA for those years were 4.62 & 5.11

Yeah, the teams can't just willfully pick and choose who they want to shut out. That's something dictated by league-wide rules which has to do with various factors such as proximity to the city, the extent of
coverage for the channels covering each team, and any other team(s) which might also have a claim to your area.
And in the case of ESPN or FOX coverage it's the network's decision as to which markets get which games if there are multiples.

MLB.TV will tell you which team(s) you're blacked out on if you go to their page and punch in your zip code.

Also breaking a streak of three opening day starts for d'Arnaud.

Mike Matheny has a surprise of his own, starting José Martinez at first, moving Carpenter across the diamond to third, and leaving Jedd Gyorko on the bench.

In contrast to Opening Days of recent past, this was a damp and cold one. Arrived early to tailgate around 10:20 or so, had a few refreshments, saw old friends like KC and Ed and Sharon, then headed on in to our seats in Left Field Landing. There was no respite in those left field seats. Kept bundled up the whole game. Good thing the Mets kept us busy and warm by scoring a bunch of runs. Heard the Yadier Molina home run literally clank the foul pole, right in front of my eyes. But all else was good! Made a wise decision to hit the men's room before the crowds really started to amass. No lines, no waiting. Didn't miss anything by having to wait in any lines, because of the hearty meal during tailgating. I wasn't hungry! Wish it was a few degrees warmer and wished there was sun, but it was a glorious day!

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

I actually thought it was the perfect temp! I prefer today to blistering July heat, though I think I did get a little sun/wind burn from being outside all day.

I clocked 16,500 steps today, roughly 7.5 miles. There was the added trip back to Corona to my car to look for the tickets I lost. didn't find them. Only took 5 minutes in the ticket office to reprint at least.

line to get in was bad though.

Good game!

Thursday's win seemed to me to have the recipe that they are going to need to replicate for sustained success this season: scoring runs without relying on the HR and clean innings from the bullpen.

Friday brings the annual tradition of having to wait an extra day for Game 2 after a long offseason. BOO!

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

A really satisfying win. On-basing > homering, and 12 hits, nine walks and a hit batsmen is a lot of on-basing. Apart from a couple of long fouls, Bruce is the only one who made a bid for a homer. Lots o' baserunners is the sort of offensive foundation you can build on.

Fewer than three GiDPs would be nice, as would some more aggressive or opportunistic baserunning. On the other hand, who would have bet on Bruce for the team's first stolen base? And against Molina!

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

Gary was saying yesterday that they were 0-8, followed by 36-12. I guess yesterday would make 37-12, which adds up to 37-20, which comes to 57 openers, which sounds right. Although Greg advocates for their 1981 second half opener to count.

Ben has his new page, too: http://ultimatemets.com/openingday.php

i believe it's

37-20 on Opening Day.

22-9 when first game is the Home Openers

not sure how to get the home opener if it's not the first game.

6-2 against the Cardinals

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

37-20 is a pace which would get you to 105 wins if projected over a full regular season.
The home opener pace of 22-9 translates to around 115 wins over a full year.
And if you want to eliminate those first eight seasons and call it 37-12 over your living memory, then you're talking about the equivalent to a 122-40 record.

That's about as lopsided as you can get.

The Home Opener record -- not counting Opener 2.0 in 1981, counting only the Shea Opener in 2000 (and not the Tokyo Opener in which the Mets were the designated home team) -- is 37-20.

In Home Openers that weren't season openers (again, not including the second season of 1981 nor Japan), the Mets' record is 15-12. For the record, the Mets lost their "home" game in Tokyo (Season Opener), won their Second Season Opener in 1981 (at Chicago) and lost their Second Season Home Opener (to Philadelphia).

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

So in the years when we had the chance to celebrate the concept of Opening Day twice, with the season's Opening Day on the road (because no matter where the Opener is, it's a cause for celebration) and then a Home Opener distinct from Opening Day, it went down like this...

Win Opening Day on the Road and Win the Home Opener: 6 times
1977, 1982, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2015

Win Opening Day on the Road and Lose the Home Opener: 9 times
1970, 1979, 1981, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2008, 2009
(Plus the 1981 Second Season Openers)

Lose Opening Day on the Road and Win the Home Opener: 7 times
1968, 1974, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2016
(2000 Opening Day was in Tokyo, when Mets were designated the home team, but it was on the road)

Lose Opening Day on the Road and Lose the Home Opener: 5 times
1962, 1964, 1984, 1997, 2011

In doubleheader terms, score it 6 sweeps, 5 swepts and 16 splits (17 with the split season)
