ALDS IST - NYY vs CLE

Chad Ochoseis
Oct 05 2017 05:49 PM

I don't figure that this will get enough attention for individual game threads, so one thread for the whole series.

Game 1 tonight features righthanded finesse pitchers Sonny Gray and Trevor Bauer. I almost scored tickets, as one of my gf's coworkers had extras, but we didn't move quickly enough. So I'll probably pop over to my local shuffleboard arena/bar and watch the game from there.

The Native Americans are leaving opportunities all over the field, which leaves me with the suspicion that the Yanx are going to get two dribblers and a blast and negate the whole thing.

Sonny Gray looks like he's a chore to catch (even if you don't have a defensively challenged catcher like Sanchez) and I know he's a chore to watch.

GAME 2: Kluber vs Sabathia in a battle of past Cleveland CY winners (2014 / 2007); 5:00 MLBN

Sabathia, despite looking like toast during various times over the last couple years, actually had himself a nice season for the Yanx [14-5; 3.69; 1.27; 27 starts] as he attempts to reinvent himself from
a thrower to a pitcher in his old age (36).
That said, he's not Kluber.

Bases loaded (or maybe just 1st & 2nd, I forget), Encarnacion on 2nd. Jay Bruce hits a soft liner up the middle but the shift has the SS behind 2nd base.
Gregorius catches the ball and dives towards 2nd to double off E.E. (my spell check keeps trying to turn that name into Incarnation)
He beats the fielder back to the bag but grossly twisted his ankle in doing so and then, to add insult to injury, came off the base because of the injury so replay review turned it into an inning-ending DP
just when it looked like the Injuns were poised to break the game open (3-2 Cleveland at the time when it had been 2-0 Yanx).

The biggest complaint about Girardi tonight was that the Yanx didn't challenge the HBP which loaded the bases and preceded the Lindor Grand Slam
The HP ump immediately called that it hit the batter's hand but it certainly could have hit the knob of the bat.
The Yanx opted not to challenge -- though that's not usually the manger's call -- and the next batter, Lindor, banked a pitch off the foul pole in RF to bring the lead from 8-3 down to 8-7

At that point, what are you saving your challenges for?!?

So even though these teams get a day off today before resuming on Sunday night (7:30) the bullpen that the Yanx lean on so heavily has been taxed pretty heavily and might have trouble bouncing
back if Tanaka finds himself in early trouble in Game 3

Between the games Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each of their relievers has made two appearances except for Warren & Garcia who each pitched in only Thursday's game
Chad Green -- 2.1 IP / 52 pitches total
David Robertson -- 5.0 / 77
Tommy Kahn -- 3.0 / 37
Aroldis Chapman -- 3.0+ / 47
Dellin Betances -- 3.0 / 46

And they get an extra challenge in the postseason right? Sanchez called to the bench for the review immediately; like before Chisenhall even got out of the box. That's totally on the manager there, I don't care how slow their "replay guys" responded. That's potentially the third out of the inning; you have to go to replay. And I think they would have won it.

I know it's the Yanks and am thrilled they choked on it, but if I consider "what if Terry had done that in a playoff game?" I would have been livid.

Oct 07 2017 05:42 PM
Re: ALDS IST - NYY vs CLE

Girardi's reasoning after the game isn't going to win him many points either: "I didn't want to break my pitcher's rhythm"
There's a fucking mound conference in MFY games about every third pitch but suddenly he doesn't want to upset his pace!
I used to think Posada was the cause of all those mound meetings but they've continued in Yanqui-land long after he's gone.

And, yes, they do get an extra review in playoff games.
I'd be in favor a giving manager's two challenges in every game but they'd have to do it without the phone consultation. You get ten seconds to challenge or we're moving on.
That would at least get rid of the microscopic overturns and it'll force the manager to rely on his players more often.

Between the non-review of the foul/HBP and the reversal of the pickoff at 2nd base, Cleveland was the beneficiary of the rule last night.
And they didn't even have to release their supply of midges on MFY relievers this time. Bet they got 'em saved up and ready to swarm if this goes back there for Game Five.

Re: ALDS IST - NYY vs CLE

According to two tweets from beat reporter Jason Beck of MLB.com, Cleveland Indians designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion’s MRI revealed no structural damage. He’s considered day-to-day with a
sprained ankle. Encarnacion said he was relieved at the results, having initially feared something much worse. His goal is to get the swelling down with an expectation that he’ll play again this postseason.

Terry Francona: “He is, I would say, I don’t know if ’remarkably’ better is a good word, but pretty close. He’s doing much better today. I don’t think he’s going to start tomorrow, but he’s not been ruled out,
either. So, we’ll take our time and allow him to continue to get treatment. But if he’s that close to being available, that’s a really good sign. So, we’re obviously not going to do anything roster-wise.”

As of now, Cleveland has no plans to replace Encarnacion on the roster.

A good one, but less than spectacular.
Basically the ball was so high that Judge had plenty of time to get to the wall and just wait for it to come down. Then it was just a matter of a tall guy guarding a short wall.
It certainly would have been a HR, but he was able to prevent it with a nice controlled leap.

They confabbed after the second, fifth, and seventh pitches. Any wonder why they're (once again) headed for the four hour mark in a game that won't even go the full nine innings?

For the "bleacher Creatures", their look makes me want to check an Anthropology textbook to see how far to the left of "Man Walks Upright" they fall on the evolutionary scale. Its somewhere before civilized man learned to curve the brim on their baseball caps.

Not all that comforting to realize that THIS* Cleveland team has now lost five consecutive put-away games; they were up 3-1 in last year's WS and now 2-0 in this series.
That 22 game winning streak doesn't count for anything right now.

* as opposed to stats you often hear quoted where the talking suit tells you about how franchise A fared against B in a series that took place during the freakin' Great Depression as if those games are somehow relevant to the current matchup

Hey Francisco Lindor: nice Grand Slam but you were 1 for 17 otherwise. You want to be counted among the great young short stops in the game today? Not with that shit you're not.

And Jose Ramirez: you were supposed to be the secret weapon, the best player no one knows about. Well guess what? You're still invisible to most baseball fans because you barely showed up
in this series [2-for-20, both singles]

And Corey Klubar, I'm not even speaking to you. Two starts totaling 6.1 innings total and you served up 9 runs including 4 HRs?!? Shit, I can get Matt Harvey to do that for me. Go get a freakin' Klu, eh!

Re: ALDS IST - NYY vs CLE

From Terry Pluto's column:
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ss ... _ends.html

But the main culprit was this: The bats went silent.

Francisco Lindor? The All-Star shortstop was 2-for-18 ... six strikeouts.

Jason Kipnis? He was 4-for-22 ... eight strikeouts.

Jose Ramirez? He was 2-for-20 ... seven strikeouts.

Edwin Encarnacion? He was 0-for-7 ... and missed three games with an ankle injury.

Michael Brantley? Coming back from an ankle injury, he was 1-for-11.

Tribe designated hitters were designated outs ... a combined 1-for-18, Brantley's single was the only hit.

The weight of great expectations combined with a fear of a postseason flop seemed to infect nearly ever Cleveland player swinging a bat.

The Indians batted .171 for the five games.

As I watch these games I find myself rooting against the Nats but that's pretty much out of habit from the regular season.
In truth though my feelings on it aren't all that strong and I suspect I'll probably be pulling for whoever the winner out of this series is over the Dodgers.

Everything was a problem. But Lindor was a few inches away from a Game 3 home run; I'd take 3-18 if two of the three hits were home runs. And the Indians scored more earned runs than the Yankees in Game 4. The 7 total errors in Games 4 and 5 - ick. So if I wanted to pin the blame on anything, I'd start with the defense.

I'll be happy for the Murph if he wins it all. Likewise for Granderson. But still, go Astros!

Re: ALDS IST - NYY vs CLE

I'd root Dodgers over Nats. Granderson + just wanting the team that beat us to lose as a rule.

I don't really have anything against the Cubs winning again either.

Favorite is still Beltran's Astros though.

I can't bemoan guys getting robbed of HRs on balls that are hit some 320 ft. Sure it's frustrating when you know that Jeter once hit a HR to a similar spot only six feet shorter, but pop-ups that are
questionable to get out of the park in Williamsburg, PA can't be treated as if heroism denied.
Plus Lindor had the killer GiDP last night, stifling the only Cleveland rally of the night just two pitches into Robertson's relief stint.

He's dead to me now (until he becomes a FA four years hence then I might re-think it)
