Down the Stretch - NL Style

The Cubs being in the midst of a seven game winning streak -- which included a 3-game sweep of the Cardinals -- pretty much put a lid on any tension that the reigning champ might fall short of the playoffs.
The remaining interest comes in that the three possible Central contenders still face off against each other over the final 2 weeks
Milwaukee's hanging in at only 3.5 out but almost certainly need to win at least 3 of 4 in their home series vs the Cubbies starting on Thursday. Cardinals are 6 games out

Cubs sked: 1 more in Tampa, 4 @ MILW, 4 @ StL, 3 hosting Reds
Brewers: 1 @ PITT, 4 vs Cubs, 3 vs Reds, 3 @ StL
Cards: 2 @ CINCY, 3 @ PITT, 4 vs Cubs, 3 vs Brewers

The only other race remains the 2nd WC where the Central loser could still catch stumbling Colorado [2-4 including back-to-back losses to SFG] who are down to a 1.0 game lead over MILW and 3.5 over StL

Rox: 1 @ SFG, 4 @ SDP, 3 vs Marlins, 3 vs Dodgers
DBacks: 1 @ SDP, 3 vs Marlins, 3 vs Giants, 3 @ KCR

Re: Down the Stretch - NL Style

So in addition to the WC race between Arizona and Colorado, there's some All-Star pitcher beef to go along with it.

It seems that this started at the ASG when then-Philly/now-Rox pitcher Pat Neshek asked temporary teammate Arizona ace Zack Greinke to autograph some stuff for him.
Neshek it seems is a big autograph hound and, according to him anyway, Greinke agreed. Fast forward to their first meeting after the ASG when Neshek sends over the cards he wanted
signed (5 he says) over to Greinke only how he not only refuses but denies ever agreeing in the first place. When pressed on the issue, Greinke added; "you wear me out" to Neshek.
Neshek then went on a collector's chat room he frequents to call Greinke "a turd" over this.

I really want the Cubs to wrap up the division soon so they can set the rotation and focus on destroying the Nationals.

I wonder if Greinke's social anxiety had something to do with his alleged turd-like behavior.

Geinke added "I wouldn't even sign for your kid."

I'd hate signing also, and would probably opt out of it, but I wouldn't be a turd about it.

Re: Down the Stretch - NL Style

The Brewers blew several chances last night (bases loaded/one-out/tie-game bottom 9th) then finally lost after the Cubs tied it w/2 outs in the 9th then won it on a Kris Bryant HR in the 10th.
The game would have been even better had the 8th & 9th innings not taken about 45 minutes each to play, but I digress.
Brews now need to sweep the remaining three games and even that may not be enough.

The biggest remaining race is the three-into-one WC where the stumbling Rox (4 straight losses and 6 of 8) are in danger of being taken by either the Brews or the suddenly hot Cardinals (13-6 in Sept)
after it seems like StL was just dealing off parts a few weeks ago.

DBacks +6
Rox ----
Brews (-1.0)
Cards (-1.5)

Dodgers broke their latest losing streak to avoid getting swept by the Phils and now have pretty much sewn up the NL best record thing so, yeah, it'll be the Nats vs the Central winner while LAD plays
the WC survivor.

Yeah, I'm totally not a collector type but still lean towards being on Team Neshek here.
Not that I KNOW his side of this is accurate, but this is hardly the first time he's asked non-teammates about this stuff and claims he's been told 'No' plenty of times before and totally accepts it when
that's the case.
But don't, if you're Greinke, agree to it, then not only refuse but angrily deny you ever agreed in the first place and stoop to the insults while doing so.

Especially when it only involves writing your name five times. In this case, it's turned out to be more effort to be a jerk than to be a nice guy.

Yeah, it's not like Neshek asked him for a signature then turned up with 87 different cards, programs, ticket stubs, etc. and was asking for an hour out of his day.

Re: Down the Stretch - NL Style

In this afternoon's game the Brewers gave up a 10th inning run to the Cubs for the third straight day*, but this time they came back with a 2R HR from Travis Shaw in the bottom half to pull one out and at
least keep themselves alive in the WC race even if the division (-4.5) is probably out of reach.

* and the game prior to that had lost via a 9th inning walk-off to Pitt -- that's a rough week whether you're fighting for a playoff slot or not

Re: Down the Stretch - NL Style

Cardinals were eliminated last night - by the Cubs on their own field just one night after the Cubs clinched the Central on that same field so all of this couldn't be going down too well in StL
Lots of Anheiser-Busch products needed to wash all that down.

Brewers still with a chance to catch the Rox for the final WC slot, 2 games down with 3 to play each.
Milwaukee is in StL for the weekend while the Rockies host the Dodgers

Re: Down the Stretch - NL Style

And the Brewers will miss the playoffs tanks to coughing up 3 two-out runs to the Cards in the 8th inning (they led 6-0 earlier in the game).
Rockies clinch before they even take the field tonight.

So the Dodgers get the DBacks/Rox WC survivor
Cubs vs Nats on the other side with the 1, 2 & 5 games in DC
