Hello they must be going - Retirements 2017/18

Players who -- willingly or otherwise -- will never grace an ML field again.

Brandon Arroyo - Of course it's not the first time he's done this, but this time he seems to really mean it.
After sitting out 2015 & 16, the now 40 y/o Arroyo came back for 14 starts in his second go-around with the Reds but that only lasted until mid-June

Matt Cain -- Great seasons from 2009 thru 2012 -- 45 wins, nearly 900 IP, CY votes in each year, but is 19-40, 4.86 in the five seasons since with less than 100 starts total. And still just 32 y/o

Matt Cain struck me as a guy who'd find a second life as a big innings eater for St. Louis.

Goodbye Is All We've Got Left To Say (2017-2018 Retirements)

Say farewell to Joba Chamberlain, retiring to spend more time with his kids (hopefully not on trampolines) or become an intergalactic gangster based on Tatooine, whichever comes first.

You laugh. But while it's hard to imagine him as the slimy puppet ultimately used in ROJ, it's not hard to think that he could eventually grow into Declan Mulholland, the actor originally cast for the role.

Sorry, couldn't find it.

What I remember about Cain mostly is that his debut against the Mets was so impressive that Keith Hernandez got up between innings to go over to the Giants booth and ask them, "What's the deal on this guy?"

Keith is willing to do the homework, but he needs to be motivated by the subject matter.

He also nearly assassinated David Wright.

I was at that game, and the 'crack' could be heard throughout the stadium.

2006 AL MVP Justin Morneau going out with a press conference at Target Field, en route to joining Michael Cuddyer and LaTroy Hawkins as a Twins special assistant.

BREAKING: Derek Jeter trying to buy the Twins so he can fire all three of them.

Yadier Molina, NOT retiring in 2017/18, but says 2020 will be his last year.

Boo him while you can.

Utley U Buttley to address the media in L.A. later today to announce how much he sucks. Also, apparently, to hang up his dirty, dirty spikes.

I wonder if this will put any thoughts into Jose Reyes' head?

He has to realize that there's not much sand left in his hourglass, right?

If Reyes were to retire ASAP, I prefer he say, "I did not get the idea from that creep Utley. In fact, outlasting him in this game is one of my most cherished achievements."

And then the Mets sign Ruben Tejada to a one-day contract contingent on Ruben hunting Utley down and sliding into him.

Reportedly Utley is announcing his retirement will be effective at season's end. Sorry, Jose's gotta keep playing.

Re: Hello they must be going - Retirements 2017/18

The odd thing about Utley's retirement is that he's actually out-played his partner at second base, Logan Forsythe.

With Corey Seagar out and Justin Turner too girthy to move back to the middle of the diamond, they Dodgers are desperate up the middle, and are experimenting with journeyman corner infielder Max Muncey who has been hitting of late, but is nobody's idea of a keystoner.

If they are going to deal Cabrera, the time may be now.

Re: Hello they must be going - Retirements 2017/18

Utley out-lasted Jimmy Rollins, and Jayson Werth, and Ryan Howard, and Shane Victorino, and Carlos Ruiz, and both cliff Lee and Roy Halladay (quite literally in that case).

From that group, only Halladay is (was) older than Utley. The others were the same age or younger.
Victorino, just the other day, did the one-day contract thing so officially retired 'as a Phillie'. I always thought that to be rather silly (seemed to have started in the NFL) but especially so in this case as Shane hasn't played since 2015

Pat "The Bat" Burrell also.

Isn't Ryan Howard still trying to make a comeback somewhere?

Howard batted .189 in 96 PAs across two stops in AAA in 2017 -- Albuquerque (Rox) & Gwinnett (Braves) -- but has yet to register a BB-Ref entry for 2018
