You're Sandy Alderson, and the Wilpons tell you to find a new manager. "Done!" you say. "Edgardo Alfonso!"

"We're not done, Sandy," they say, in unison, which is creepy. "We need a guy with experience — big league experience."

"We insist on it," adds Sol Katz, who up until that moment, you hadn't realized was in the room, but now you can't stop thinking about how he's dominating the room.

"Solly Hemus," you say.

"That's not gonna work out either," says Katz, with a terrifying look in his eye. "But I'm sure you'll find somebody."

So you head back to your office and huddle with your lieutenants. "Get me the name of every living experienced manager!" you cry.

And here you are. Here's the first group (handed to you by Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations & Assistant General Manager John Ricco!) Pick four of these guys that you are going to call in for an interview.

(Yes, I realize Terry is on the list, and that's absurd, but as the last guy who has lost his job, he's the most recent available experienced manager in existence.)

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

First, I call in Glenn Hoffman cause he's the youngblood in Group A, checking in at a hungry and spry 59 years of age.

Then I call Ron Washington, because despite his great W/L record, I seem to recall him making some incredibly dumbfounding moves when managing the Rangers in the playoffs. I think he would be fascinating to talk baseball with in the same way it would be fascinating to talk baseball with Joe Morgan.

Then I call in Joe Altobelli and Dave Bristol together because guys in the 80's who want to talk about baseball are super fun to hang out with, and more than one is even better.

Then I hope to God there's an actual candidate in Group B.

Can't wait for group B.

If I had to pick one, Vukovich.

But only if I HAD to pick one.

Washington, if only to talk about drugs.

Hargrove is a no because he would take too long to bring out the lineup card.

I figured folks would shrug and vote for the four youngest, but here we are and two guys gave votes for calling Dave Bristol in for interview. Fair play to you.

None of the above, although Ron Washington might get the most out of Harvey.

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

Trammell, if only to pepper him with '85 Tigers questions.

Washington, because I like his energy. His twitchy, motor-mouthed, friend-alienating energy.

Hargrove, because anyone who can navigate the roiling tabloid whirlpool of Cleveland for that long deserves a shot.

Quade, because I'd want to see how many Total Recall jokes I could lob at him before he got up and left.

Good Lord, this group.

Fuck all these guys. Send them careening off the edge of a cliff in a bus and the only one who'd notice is the guy who runs baseball-reference.com.

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

Ron Washington is currently 3rd base coaching in Atlanta, they just hired him last off season.
And while I wouldn't want him as my manager (I seem to remember a lot of kooky WS decisions and actions) he has a great reputation -- and not merely as portrayed on the silver screen -- as a running
coach and particularly as a defensive guru for infielders. Think this team couldn't use one of those right about now?

Like I said he's 3rd base coaching right now and, seeing as how Sherlock is the one guy they're retaining, he's probably not gettable out of his current slot unless he could be sold on the idea that a
bench coach position would be an upgrade.

If we hired Washington, anytime I tried to teach a new skill to any player, I'd be tempted to turn to him and say, "It's not that hard. Tell him, Wash."

Washington, for the obvious entertainment value.

Grady Little, so I can say, "I'm not sure if anyone has asked you this before, but why did you stick with Pedro?"

Rene Lachemann, because he's got a really cool black hat with a green brim.

I don't know. A guy with WASHINGTON on the back of his uniform might be a spy from the Nationals. At the very least, he'd have mixed loyalties.

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

I went with Trammell, who played, then managed for the Tigers of Detroit back when Michigan was in the good hands of Democrat governors James Blanchard and Jennifer Granholm. This was before that once proud state was purchased by that know nothing Betsy Devos and hijacked by the GOP. Back then, you could send your kids to the public schools of Detroit knowing that your tax dollars wouldn't be siphoned off to voucher charter schools that would use those tax dollars to discriminate against kids and teach lunatic religious theories. And create all white flight schools, all at the expense and annihilation of inner city schools because the tax dollar pot of money is finite and where that money goes is a zero sum game. Back then, Flint's drinking water was safe to drink. You think Betsy Devos would ever drink Flint's water? Why didn't Flint get the same water that Holland, Michigan gets? Was that all part of God's plan? The God that lives in Betsy Devos's God's Kingdom? Now that scumbag state is about to pass voter suppression laws even though there's no evidence of voter fraud in Michigan unless you count what the scumbag current governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder did to throw out 75,000 ballots from Detroit during last year's presidential election, where Trammell used to play. So what if Michigan's new law will appear to be unconstitutional? By the time the challenge to the law reaches the Supreme Court, there'll be a second Neil Gorsuch on that bench to make Michigan's corrupt partisan voter suppression legal. Maybe Trammell could put an end to the abusive partisan gerrymandering happening in Michigan, where according to the efficiency gap, Michigan's lines are the next most outrageous lines in the nation, second only to the more scumbaggier state of North Carolina.

So that's why I voted for Trammell.

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

It looks like Washington, Trammel, and Hargrove will advance from Group A, but we have a four-way tie among Mike Quade, Larry Parrish, and Dave Bristol for the last spot. If any who have a vote remaining want to break this tie, here's your chance. It can also be broken by somebody switching their vote.

Go for it! Democracy is fun!

Re: Giants Sunflower Seeds presents: Find Us a Manager (Grou

I voted for Larry Parrish. I don't know Parrish personally, but I did meet him. And if I were playing that game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I only need one personal acquaintance to link myself directly to Parrish. Plus he managed the Tigers. So he must know the current sad state of political affairs in Michigan, where, politically speaking, everything that's coming out of that wholly owned Betsy Devos subsidiary is slimy. Maybe Larry Parrish can fix things in Michigan where the drinking water in Flint is poisonous all so that scumbag Snyder could save seven dollars a day. Where the pols run Detroit like it's the Warsaw Ghetto of WWII, stealing their education money so that Betsy Devos can fund schools that teach conversion therapy and intelligent design with public tax dollars. Where the scumbag governor throws out 75,000 votes coming out of Detroit in a state election that Trump won by about 10,000 votes. The state that's got just about the most abusive and contrived congressional lines, all to guarantee that the scumbag GOP running things in Michigan gets most seats with less than most of the vote. Where the state went to right to work mainly to weaken the unions because unions tend to vote Democrat. Maybe Parrish can fix Michigan. I was looking to vote for Sparky Anderson or Billy Martin or Ralph Houk, but after a while of looking for them, I remembered that they were all dead. I'm sure they're rolling over in their graves over what's become of Michigan, which is lucky that there's the insaner state of North Carolina to keep everyone's eyes off of what a sleazeball state Michigan has become. Plus, their educational system is about the worst in the nation, thanks to that know nothing Devos running it and their biggest city, Detroit, once one of the greatest cites in America, went bankrupt and is a shithole. Vote for Larry Parrish.

I'll bet anything that someone from this forum is gonna post here how Michigan gave out some free sandwiches and a couple of overcoats to some homeless people and how that makes everything else in this post about the vomit drinking water and gerrymandering alright. I'll bet that those homeless people receiving those overcoats were Republicans, too. I suppose it's OK to destroy an entire city's public education system because whoever did it is a nice guy and those homeless republicans got extra pickles.
