Re: NY Comic Con...

Not this year, no. I do have a bunch of friends who will be there, though.

Re: NY Comic Con...

it was not a great con. There were very few panels or screenings i had any interest in, and the few they had were off-site, at MSG and the Hammerstein Ballroom (both of which are long hikes away from Javitz). Artists Alley was in a smaller venue and became unspeakably congested. The show room is always packed, but it seemed even worse this year. I think they keep selling tickets until they run out of plastic.

I've been going to cons for over 45 years. I was at the Commodore Hotel in the early 70s for the first of the NYC Comic Conventions, and at Phil Seuling's Comic book marketplace on Sundays, and I've been at San Diego a few times, and Chicago, and Philadelphia. I even started a Con at my university ("I-Con... Long Island's biggest convention of science fiction, fact and fantasy" - i wrote that!) and it continued on for over 30 years. So i think i know a few things about Cons (-- actually, i think i know a few things about everything, but in this case i'm right). And IMO, the overpricing, and overpopulation via overselling, as well as its attempt to be all things to all people with no thematic identity, and its lack of geographic centrality by off-siting its biggest moments, has made the NYCC an unpleasant experience. And, in the digital age, there is no need to go to a Con anymore just to buy any particular thing -- it's all available online and often at a better price.

So there is little reason for me to go anymore. Which i guess is sad, but 45 years is enough for anything, i suppose.
