Oakland 2023!

Oakland is Planning on Opening a New Stadium in 2023! I am so hoping they will be in town in conjunction with the Bay to Breakers race. I combined that race with a trip to the Coliseum in 2013 and had a great time!

That deal is a LONG way from coming to reality. Basically what the team has done is settle on a preferred site from among three they had been considering. Now they have the tough job of making it a reality, starting with cutting a deal with the folks who actually own the land itself. And then there'll the city to deal with and tons of permits and infrastructure that needs to be approved, etc. The site, should this come off, is some 5-6 miles closer to downtown Oakland as compared to the current joint, next to Laney College if anyone knows that area.

Kind of amazing that Oakland is the last town where the MLB team and NFL team share a stadium, at least until the Raiders leave for Las Vegas.

And when the NBA's Warriors leave for San Fran across the bay in time for the 2019-20 season (their new crib in already under construction) the A's will be the only pro team left in Oakland. So, I did a little research and it turns out that the peak year for MLB teams sharing stadiums with NFL teams was 1971, when 18 stadiums performed double duty. If you add the Canadian Football League, then 18 is achieved once again in 1980-1981. And if you add the USFL, then in 1983 you once again have 18 shared stadiums (ironically, it was the Raiders leaving for Los Angeles that bumped it down to 17 in 1982, but then the Invaders brought the number back up in 83). There were at least 10 stadiums with baseball and football tenants every year from 1961 to 1997.

Lukewarm take: I predict that if the current trend of franchise owners [crossout:2oohr9xt]extorting cities for[/crossout:2oohr9xt] gently requesting public money to finance stadiums holds up, that the next wave of new stadium construction (probably a generation away) will bring back the multi-use facility.

Possible, especially if movable field trays become something feasible enough to ubiquitous, as well as other engineering advances that would allow easier modification of stadiums for different sports.
