NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

Frayed Knot

The start of this one pretty much got ignored with the lengthy Yanqui game on Friday night (this one almost ended first despite starting 2-1/2 hours later).
Strasburg carried a no-hitter into the 6th but got done in by 2 unearned runs while the Nats bats got no-nit from the 3rd thru 9th innings making the Cubs the first and so far only road team to win a game
in this year's playoffs.
Cubs 3 - Nats 0

Game 2 (5:30) will see a couple of lefties on the mound. Gio Gonzalez for the Nats as they continue to be cagey about the condition of Scherzer's hamstring (or ankle, or knee, or whatever).
Jon Lester, not exactly pitching his best ball down the stretch, for the Cubs

Only good outcome in this series for me is they both don't advance.

I'm rooting for the Nats. I really only dislike teams if they're wildly successful and win lots of championships or if they interfere with the Mets success, and the Nats haven't really done either considering that the Mets have basically shot themselves in the foot every season since the Nats got good in 2012 (excepting of course, the one season when the Mets easily defeated the Nats for the NL East title).

GAME 3

The Cubs first hit of the day, a one-out double in the 7th by Ben Zobrist, is Scherzer's last pitch of the game. He had also walked three and hit one
Nats lead 1-0 thanks to a double error by LF Kyle Schwarber -- first he dropped Murph's fly ball, then he kicked it. Murph wound up on 3rd and Zimmerman followed with a two-out double.

Dusty went out there and chatted for a while before making the switch, which at least made it look like he went out there without his mind made up and just didn't like what he heard.

And now the Cubs have gone ahead on a blooper into no-man's land.
Heading to the 9t, 2-1 Chicago

I always base this kind of thing on how many obnoxious fans of a team I know, online and in real life. And I know enough boisterous Nats fans to make me hope they lose. I don't know any Cubs fans personally and the few friends I have online that are Cubs fans (I used to travel to Iowa for work) are decent enough.

Re: NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

Nat bats are hitting .121/.200/.231 across the three games so far and have scored 7 runs in total - 5 of them in one inning.
Cubs are barely hitting better but they even survived making four errors in yesterday's game.

And tonight (5:40) they put their season in the hands of Tanner Roark [13-11; 4.67]

Lots of rain in the forecast. A rainout would allow WSH to skip Roark and then go Scherzer, Gonzalez.

The winner of this series will face the Dodgers, which isn't a scoop, but we didn't have a Dodgers-D'Backs thread, so it seemed worth acknowledging L.A. swept Arizona in their series.

Strasburg would potentially start game 4 on three days rest. Rainout or not, if this series goes five he's getting another start.

Yeah, I think bmfc meant [u:3tpx6v23]Strasburg[/u:3tpx6v23] & Gio rather than Scherzer who went just yesterday.
And now the game HAS been postponed until Wednesday so we'll find out soon enough how they, or the Cubs for that matter, will adjust their rotations.

Re: NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

Meaning they'll have the Strasburg / Scherzer tag team combo if they get to Game Five, but of course first they'll have to survive Game Four and considering this team is Oh-for-forever in do or die
games it would be pretty tough to go out in Round One for the fourth time in six years with your fourth starter on the mound.

Strasburg apparently IS starting now.

Were the Nats shamed into starting him? Is he going to literally pass out on the mound? only time will tell.

Re: NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

Chicago Tribune update, including lots of David Ross bashing Strasburg.

Former Cubs catcher David Ross, said Tuesday night on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight," the original decision by Strasburg not to start makes “the whole organization look bad.”

Ross called Strasburg’s ailment “the sniffles" in downplaying his sickness.

“For me, as a teammate and the guy that I rely on, your guy, your No. 1 starter, says ‘I’ve got the sniffles and I can’t go?’” Ross said. “I’m like ‘What? They asked you to go. We gave you $175 million dollars, if I’m the manager of that team and I ask you to take the ball…

“There’s not one dude that doesn’t want the ball in the playoffs. You want to know why the Washington Nationals can’t get over the hump? That tells tells me a lot about him.
I don’t know about that clubhouse, but that tells me a lot about him if these reports are true.”

Ross suggested Strasburg is a bad teammate.

"If I’m his teammate and I walk in the clubhouse the next day, I can’t make eye contact with this dude,” Ross said. “This is as bad as it gets for me as a teammate.”

Contrary to Gerald Ford, their long Nationals nightmare is definitely NOT over.
They've just been inventing ways to allow runs tonight. And the Cubs, while hitting better tonight than in most of this series, still aren't exactly ripping the cover off the ball.

I'm not sure rooting interest is the issue. This game would be a slog if it was the 1969 Mets against the 1986 Mets.

Re: NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

One thing Manfred has said he wants to reign in is mound visits - and I'm all in favor of it.
Commercial breaks between innings and during pitching changes are one thing, but at one point I timed it at a full two minutes between the final pitch to one batter and the first pitch to the next
simply because the team in the field decided they needed a committee meeting before proceeding. That kind of stuff can't continue.

And as I type a new mound meeting is going on.

Once in a while I work a split shift, I go home after lunch, and nap, and then return to work and do some trainings for our off shift engineers, and work a 8 PM-midnight shift, and yesterday happened to be one of those days.

So I got to come home and watch the 9th inning and see the Nats season end. And I'm 100% cool with that. I will root for the Cubs to beat the Dodgers as well. Because of Face Buttley. Fuck that guy.

Re: NLDS IST - Cubs vs Nationals

So it's safe to say that the Max Scherzer experiment didn't quite work out last night.
In fairness to him he got more than a bit unlucky, but the bottom line is four runs/two earned in just one inning and he gets charged with the big 'L'

And all of the damage came after he retired the first two guys on just six pitches total. Then the roof caved in:
- infield single
- bloop single
- double (that one was at least hit semi-hard) - 2 Runs
- IW
- K, but passed ball and then a throwing error allows a run to score and runners wind up on 2nd & 3rd - 1 Run
- Reach on catcher's interference *
- HBP - 1 Run
- and finally the 3rd out on a pop-up

* speaking of catcher's interference, Ellsbury got on again this way in that Game 5, this coming off a season when he passed Pete Rose for the all-time lead (in about half the plate appearances).
I'd like to know how often he just happens to do that when he has two strikes on him. I'm betting it's a lot more common than with no or one strike which would add credence to the idea
that there's a degree of intent there. And while there's something to be said for getting on base any way you can, this 'method' is one that whacks the catcher's hand with a club and I'd be
tempted to stick one in his ribs or even 'buzz his tower' the next time up if I even thought he was doing that intentionally.

He's never had a CI with no strikes.

14 behind in the count, 9 even, 8 ahead.

5/31 of the times his team has had more than a one run lead. 19 of the times his team wasn't winning.

It's most often on the 4th pitch. Only 7 have come before that.

It's not conclusive in my eyes, but certainly suggestive.

That 24 of the 31 came with two strikes makes is more than a bit suggestive IMO
The usual excuse of 'well, he has a long swing' doesn't explain why it suddenly gets longer when you would normally want it to get shorter.

It's also occurring much more often as his career goes on.
I'm surprised more isn't being made of this by MFY opponents.

No reason to pity them from my perspective. Rizzo said "we've won 4 division championship, we've played tough series" so that's apparently what he's going for. Their fans will be fine, they barely care. One told me that he's glad he can save money on playoff tickets. It was a bizarre, tough loss but the hell with them. They have the division championship in 2018 all but locked up already and that's a nice way to go into the off-season.

How bizarre was it? Unprecedented, per from Barry Svrluga about the top of the 5th:
Four straight Cubs reached base in unconventional ways, some known only to true baseball seam heads — an intentional walk, a strikeout with a passed ball (about which there was some controversy), catcher interference and a hit batsman. The website baseball-reference.com has 2.73 million half-innings in its database. None of them contain those four events — let alone from four consecutive hitters.
