You're Sandy Alderson. There's no denying it. It's the name on your door and on your desk and you pull out your wallet and check your ID. License, credit cards, USAA insurance card, it all checks out.

And if all checks out, you may as well get to work. You're making the rounds of some of your re-hires. You're of course re-signing your broadcast booth, at an honorable rate. You call Keith to square things and he's chatty.

"Keith," you say, "I've been looking at old managers."

"HARRY THE HAT!" he shouts. My first manager in pro-ball. He hated ballplayers with cars. Can you imagine that?! He resented that a few of the guys had cars!"

"Keith," you say, "I love your feel for the history of the game. I need you to help me find 17 living managers. You know, like Sandberg and Bob Boone and guys like that."

"Boone's alive?" he asks, "God you wouldn't have guessed it if you've seen him during the last few years. Lumbago, I think."

"Don't change, Keith. You stand by, I'll Fed Ex you a bunch of names of guys we're already considering, and you send me back guys you know."

"FedEx? I don't know. DSL is a lot faster and more reliable out here."

"Yeah whatever. Get it to me by tomorrow or never."

That's the way you've gotta deal with Keith. When he's excited about something, he's a dog with a new toy, and he's all over it. When he's not, he grows bored. You've gotta force quick turnaround out of the guy.

And wouldn't you know it. The next day, the DSL guy comes to the office door. You NEVER get DSL deliveries. But Keith's right. Fast and reliable.

You pour over the names before you. At the bottom it says, "Livin' the Amazin' Life, San'. — Thanks, Keith.

Good for him. Buty you've got to find four of these guys to call in for an interview before the day is out.

I had no idea that Red Schoendienst was still among us.

And Gene Tenace managed the Blue Jays?

Re: Carpenters Scorebooks presents: Find Us a Manager (Group

He sort of got the hold for the 1991 Toronto Blue Jays. Mid-season, manager Cito Gaston was sidelined with a hernatied disc. Tenace came on mid-season and managed 33 games, keeping the ship sailing to the tune of a 19-14 record, before turning the team back over to Cito, who led them homeward toward their first-place finish.

I think they should hire Bobby Wine as their manager and Cookie Rojas as the bench coach, because who wouldn't want to live through the days of Wine and Rojas?

You owe me a new keyboard. Or at least another cup of coffee.
But you'll have the same reaction when you notice my Ted Turner vote.

Re: Carpenters Scorebooks presents: Find Us a Manager (Group

It was hardly an original joke so at best I'll chip in a small portion towards your keyboard replacement fund.
The movie came out in 1962 just a year prior to Wine & Rojas becoming teammates with the Phillies in 1963 where they were the usual SS / 2B combo for the better part of five seasons together, so
that reference has been made a bunch of times before. McCarver used that line often.

I know. The flashback got me.
Totally unexpected.

Ted Turner. And in his spare time, he could whip SNY into an efficient news-gathering organization.

I don't believe Keith would ever get you an entire list of 17. Maybe five, scribbled on a napkin somewhere. He CERTAINLY wouldn't get around to sending it over.

Schoendienst.

Schoendienst for me, he would make a good song parody subject.
