You're reading a book at a Starbucks. What Happened? It's just depressing you. There's a safe hanging over this woman's head and she can't see it. It's hanging over all of our heads.
Then somebody calls out "Terry!" They have your drink. Half caffeinated. I guess your still Terry. And you've reviewed 154 former managers. Then, last night, you did what you promised you'd never do again. Drunk texting Billy Beane.
"Billlwy, i need a madnager," you digitally slur into Nokia.
"You want me to giftwrap Art Howe for the Mets again?" he sarcastically responds. "Done!"
"Dont' be a dicck. The athletics sucuk too!" you respond, a little louder than expected.
"I haev a list! 154 names. All fwtith MLB edxperience."
"Let me run that through our people. I think we have 172 since Solly Hemus died.
"you have more namecs! send me your nams e!" you write. Even as you hit send, you know you're coming across as an incoherent incompetent.
"Get to sleep," Billy writes. "I'll have those names for you in the morning. "And Sandy, people love you."
So here you are, sucking coffee down at Startbucks, listening to Lucinda Williams warble, and crossing out all the names on Billy's list you already have. And gradually, a final list start's to emerge. Eighteen names. This is the last batch. You take a swallow and stare.
Which four guys do you call in for an interview.
