Supposedly, the Mets are down to these five dudes, and hope to make a decision this weekend. Time to get on the bandwagon of your choosing.

McEwing or Cora

My vote was for McEwing

Re: Real Managerial Poll

At least some of the McEwing myth of "He plays the game the right way — if I had a team of 25 Joe McEwings ..." is just that, right? Mythmaking?

I mean, he was a Cardinal.

I voted for Cora, even though it seems he's bound for Boston.

I have no interest in McEwing at all. Acta, I guess.

Re: Real Managerial Poll

Acta has some things going for him: connections in the organization, strong bilingual skills, and he managed the Dominican Republic National Team and presumably has connections with players from the DR.

But given 5 1/2 seasons of big league experience, with two organizations, he has never managed a team to a winning record. And three (or 2 1/2) of those seasons were truly terrible. His overall winning percentage over 890 games is .418.

You don't want to make too much of that, as managers can only work with what they've got (Torre did worse with the Mets and look at him now), but it's not like Acta's teams trended upward during his tenures.

Re: Real Managerial Poll

All the way with Callaway.

Pitching guy and the Mets are or should be built on pitching. Younger guy who has had some success with the Injuns, maybe he can figure out Harvey/Matz. New to the organization so no baggage.

Yeah, Callaway is kind of interesting. He's also in the mix for the Phillies.

The music guy will play "Minnie the Moocher" when he walks to the mound.

Mythmaking? I dunno, but I can tell you that if you had a team of 25 McEwings, you'd have the worst team in baseball. McEwing wasn't gonna hustle his teams into anything more than an early October vacation, a coupl'a hits against Randy Johnson a million years ago notwithstanding.

Who should manage the Mets? I dunno, but it looks like all the candidates who had more options went elsewhere and the Mets are left with the leftovers because, really, who'd wanna manage for eff and Jeff when there are other offers?

Were Gardenhire and Ausmus even on the Mets' lists? I don't know if they've lost out on anyone they actually wanted.

Just like he has been available each time he has been let go, or not rehired, by a major league team.
There must be reasons. And they might be different, or the same, at each stop along the way.
Pass.

I'll pass too, but Dusty's been employed as a ML manager for 19 of the last 22 seasons and reached the playoffs in nine of them so it's not like he's a toxic asset that no one want to touch.
He lasted 10, 4, 6, and 2 seasons at his four stops.

Re: Real Managerial Poll

I was thinking the other day that even though I argued it would be harmless, Terry being Fred's buddy and a "specical assistant" is right out of Wilpon recipe book for front-office dysfunction, so maybe Sandy selects the guy least likely to be influenced by them/most able to placate them without necessarily doing what they say. I'm not sure offhand who that is.

For a long time I was convinced they wouldn't hire a first-timer but obvs they're considering it. Callaway?

If Long gets the job they must think he's going to rock the casbah.

Callaway and Cora intrigue. Like most of the others, I'm betting on the Long shot.

During that time, I'd be willing to bet that we have seen more TV close-ups of him, as in REALLY close, than we have seen of all the other managers combined. At least during that time, he has gone from spitting sunflower seeds to chewing on a toothpick. Its less disgusting.

Re: Real Managerial Poll

Back to McEwing for a sec, of course no one should want an entire team of 'Super Joes'. It was a stupid concept then and is just as dumb now.
But I'd also hate to discount him as a manager simply based on the idea that too many media & fans once over-rated his value as a player.

Look, I/we have no idea what kind of a skipper he'd be, but nor do we on Cora even though we seem to be a lot more favorable towards hiring him. Cora's playing career was about twice as
long as McEwing's but both were otherwise pretty similar part-time utility guys with similar stats and both have since done the bench coach route but not the minor league managing process.
Get beyond that and we're down to relying on what the "buzz" is on each and what leaks about how the interviews went.

I have to give him credit for being prepared. He must have heard that the Mets conduct their interviews in dimly lit rooms, so he brought along a flashlight.

Maybe the Mets never bothered to openly announce Handsome Brad Ausmus as a candidate because Ausmus made it clear from the get-go that he had no interest in managing the Mets.

Report: Handsome Man Not Interested In Managing Mets

excerpt:

Recently ousted Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is looking for another team. Just, uh, not one as messy as the Mets—the man has standards, you know.
Per a new report from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman, Ausmus has taken his name out of the running for the Mets’ open position at manager. He’s not alone, as former White Sox manager Robin Ventura has reportedly done the same. Who does want to manage a team known for its recent history of poorly handled injuries, a weirdly high number of minor public relations crises, and a dysfunctional connection between ownership and front office? The Mets are reportedly banking on working something out from a list that includes current hitting coach Kevin Long, former player Joe McEwing, or Astros bench coach Alex Cora. (The last one there seems unlikely, as Cora is rumored to be a top candidate to reunite with the Red Sox, with whom he won the 2007 World Series as a player.)

For more than 10 years now, the only managers the Mets were able to sign were those who weren't going to get any other offers and had no other place to go. I predict that Alderson's eventual retirement will unchain Jeff Wilpon in ways never before seen which will result in some Trump-like performances a couple of times a year.
