Girardi's Head Rolls (split from LOL Yankees)

Girardi OUT. I'm guessing that WSH offers him a contract. That makes 3 playoff managers from this year who are out of a job.

Re: LOL Yankees

How does this square with "likeable overachieving underdogs" making an improbable run to game 7 of the ALCS? If any of that were true, shouldn't the manager be rewarded?

Re: LOL Yankees

I think this was his call to walk away. I don't see him going to Washington, though. I think he'll land in Florida, closer to home.

Any doubt the MFY's kept this one quiet until the Mets were Calloway'd? Just in case?

Also, I realized this #LOLYankees thread was missing this beauty of a swing. There's a slow-mo after the regular-mo, too.

Re: LOL Yankees

He's already done the Florida thing. Got along terribly with his bosses there. Do you think he and Jeter have a relationship strong enough to fire Mattingly over?

As far as sitting on this until the Mets left the marketplace, sure, why not? But that also means sitting on it until several other teams had snatched candidates off the shelves also. Hey, Yankees, sure, the Mets won't get Girardi, but now you won't get Calloway. Suckers.

Maybe it serves us right that our 2017 MFY thread was titled "LOL Yankees" and they were one fucking game away from the World Series.

In 2018 lets' just go back to calling them dickheads.

The Florida theory only had legs while I thought that it was his call to walk away.

As for the MFY's waiting to announce this, I wonder if they already have a name in mind.

This is the part I didn't get either and was biting my lip all along to refrain from commenting on. The team was a hair away from winning the pennant and going to the WS and you're all mocking them because your 70 win team .... did what exactly?

Re: Girardi's Head Rolls (split from LOL Yankees)

Girardi is originally a Chicago guy. The Cubs are set but the White Sox are stocking up on prospects lately and may be a good landing spot for him in a year or two.

This year's Yanx actually under-achieved their pythagorean projection by a whopping Nine games as their RS/RA ratio [858 / 660] suggested they should have been a 100 win team this season
instead of the 91 they actually won. I doubt that that alone was enough to sway MFY mgmt especially since it was coming off the 2016 when they managed 84 wins despite a negative RS/RA

Well the thread was titled back in [crossout]February or so[/crossout] late January so it's not like the season results were in at that point.

Do you think the Pythagorean differential is a good metric to judge a manager on? It's a useful tool and should be part of the conversation, I guess, but I have my doubts.

If the team wins a game by knocking out the pitcher early, and then runs up a 17-2 score against increasingly weaker pitchers (which seemed to happen with unusual frequency in this highly volatile season), but they lose 6-5 the next day, they look bad Pythagoras-wise. But were they? I don't know.

I know you're not saying that, but I'm asking.

Not particularly. It's why I said that I doubt the front office was going to hang that on him because if they did they'd have to totally ignore his 'over' achievement the previous season.
I mean I suppose one could rationalize saying that the manager won "only" 7 more games out of a team which just improved from -20 runs to +198 over one season (as the '16 to '17 Yanx did) so whatsupwitdat?
but I think that's missing several forests while examining trees.

better hope I don't get to the 2018 thread first, because I'm thinking of circus-themed thread titles taunting them and their dysfunctional organization.

REEKS of Steinbrenner meddling. nostalgic if that nostalgia time wasn't mostly before I was aware of it.

The Red Sox fired their playoff manager, the Yankees gotta keep pace.

The thread was called "LOL Yankees" because I was poking fun at the hideous spring training caps they had just unveiled.

Supposedly this is the Yankees' new spring training cap.

Not even St. Derek could make this better. Though if you placed the cap on the ground between third and second if would have more range than Jeter did.

That said, I haven't seen the Mets new spring cap. Hopefully it's not this bad.

I'm sad that Mr. Met is being removed from the blue jerseys.

I always understood the rule to be no news that will interfere with game coverage. I think it was okay for the Yankees to fire Girardi on a travel day.

But did they in fact announce anything? Or did this story leak out?

it was never really an edict and it went out the window years ago.

The funny thing is that the edict was issued in response to the Yankees firing of a manager.

Like, back in 1985 or something.

And he is said to have a third, on Candlewood Lake, because he is frequently seen, and photographed, at the local pizzeria here in my home CT town (as I may have mentioned in one of the pizza threads) and the pictures show up in the local weekly paper.
I've planned that if and when I see him, I'd say, "I remember you when you were a backup catcher on the Cubs".

Mike & Mike today, briefly acknowledging that baseball exists, discussed the Girardi dismissal, and noted that someone described him as "a closed fist." The suggestion was that Cashman wanted someone to guide the next generation of MFYs who wasn't quite as uptight.

Word out of DC is that the Nats are out on Girardi because they don't believe in paying their managers big contracts.

Frayed Knot
Oct 27 2017 11:14 PM
Re: Girardi's Head Rolls (split from LOL Yankees)

Yeah, money was a bigger reason for the Nats not re-upping Baker than it was for the Yanx not re-upping Girardi so there's not way Washington is going to swap one out for the other. Girardi was
already higher paid than Dusty and, being younger, is also going to want a longer term deal.
Recently canned Red Sox mgr John Farrell is going to interview with the Nats but beyond that I'm not sure where they're going.

Both these cases are interesting in that the teams are going to wind up with managers with a lot less experience than the ones they just got rid of which, considering the expectations -- one team stacked
with young players and being one win from getting to the WS, while the other is coming off 94 & 97 win seasons and entering the final year of both Harper's and Murphy's deals -- the stakes for both are
only going to ratchet up from here.

Yes, but is only revealing now that he knew it all along.

Turns out we're both prescient:
From Phil Mushnick's NY Post column today: ... after Francesa mistreated a caller "as a know-nothing" for suggesting last week that Girardi could be out ... once Girardi’s removal was announced Francesa
then "claimed he knew as far back as July that the Girardi-Yankees relationship was near its contentious end! And he knew it when their eyes met during the ALCS in Yankee Stadium!"
