QUIZ: NL East MVPs 1969-2017

The Mets have had no National League MVPs, but the mythical National League East MVP is a different story. It is mythical, in that no such award is bestowed, but it does exist if you want it to. And for the purposes of this quiz, I want it to.

What I'd like you to do is identify the highest-ranking MVP candidate from the National League East in each of the 49 seasons that there has been a National League East. In some cases, it's the same as a given year's National League MVP. In other cases, it's a close runner-up, or even a distant also-ran. There have been years when the West and Central have run roughshod over the voting.

We're talking about the NL East player to collect the most BBWAA MVP points in each of these seasons:

1969-1992: Among Mets, Phillies, Expos, Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs
1993: Among Mets, Phillies, Expos, Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs, Marlins
1994-2004: Among Mets, Phillies, Expos, Marlins, Braves
2005-2017: Among Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Marlins, Braves

To be clear, Cardinals, Cubs and Pirates from AFTER 1993 are not eligible; ditto Braves from BEFORE 1994. We're only interested in players whose teams played under the auspices of the same division as the Mets in their most valuable years.

In all, 36 players have taken this honor, some more than once, a couple of times in a tie. Some even won it as Mets! Please offer the first and last name of a player you know/think was the NL East MVP. You don't have to give the year if you're not sure; I'll fill those in as we go along.

Once answer per post. Good and valuable luck!

Re: QUIZ: NL East MVPs 1969-2017

FYI: All the NL MVPs have been named. Everybody else did not win the league award, but topped all NL East players in his given year(s).

And as mentioned, we have two Hall of Famers; a pitcher; and a New York Met who shared his honor.

ALSO we have a future Met when he won and a former Met when he won (two different guys).

1989 was the year of Kevin Mitchell that Mets fans agonize over, but part of the reason he was expendable was the team's depth at third.

Close, but no HoJo.

That year's answer is -- I think it will be agreed when revealed -- one of the more surprising. A very good player but not generally identified with the team he was with at the time.

Still left:

--A Hall of Famer
--A pitcher (he was NL East MVP twice)
--A Met (he shared his NL East MVP award Stargell-Hernandez style...with a Freeman-level Met-killer)
--The guy from 1989 not readily identified with the team he was on that year

Also:

--A guy perhaps best known for the team he didn't play for
--Two guys who won't find their team of NL East MVP record in the standings these days
--A guy who got around in various Octobers

And a couple of others still.

The guy from the '70s is in the Hall of Fame.

The guy from the '80s got around in October.

The guy from 1994 not only got around a lot in general, but was ALSO a future Met (so far off in the future at that time that I forgot about it until this moment).

The guy from 1998 has a bit of that "not the team you identify him with" thing going; you may identify him with the team he was with in 1998, but I'm guessing your catlike reflexes will place him with another squad.

The pitcher won it in consecutive years (and his name was very recently in the news).

This happened during the 1999 NLCS. No wonder it flew under your and my radar.

O.J. Simpson said Tuesday that a call he made to 911 to get help for a woman on cocaine turned into a big misunderstanding.

Simpson called 911 Sunday night, saying he was trying to get help for a woman he said had been on a two-day cocaine binge with former major league baseball player Pedro Guerrero.

I will say that I wouldn't have gotten the 2004 guy had it been, uh, drawn up for me.

The 2009 guy used to be synonymous with his NL East team, which used to have a slightly different identity.

2012 was shared. Two guys. ONE OF THEM A MET.

All we need to wrap this up is 2004 (and you may have to be related to Nancy Drew to figure it out) and the co-winner from 2012, who went on to be known as quite the father figure.

Yes, J.D. Drew, who snubbed the Phillies as an amateur, was a postseason opponent of the Mets as a Cardinal and Dodger and won a ring as a world champion Red Sock...he was the NL East MVP in his one year as a Brave, in 2004. Good timing, if that's what he was going for.

Adam LaRoche, who likely shared his co-MVP honor with his son, is correct. Maybe not correct dragging the kid around the league with him, but he is our final answer.

Re: QUIZ: NL East MVPs 1969-2017

I never would've gotten David Wright for 2012. When I first checked into this thread, I saw that the 2012 answer wasn't solved yet and I figured if it was a Met, it had to logically be Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. I can't even remember Wright being so good that recently. In my mind, he was scuffling with one setback or another (stadium or health related) ever since the Mets left Shea Stadium.

Wright had a hellacious start to 2012, batting over .400 in late May. That was the year the Giants hyped Pablo Sandoval into the starting All-Star berth at third base, and it was legit highway robbery of David's spot (he made the team as a reserve). Played in 156 games, finished second in WAR, which voters were cognizant of by then. Still, given the Mets' falloff in the second half and his own mid-course correction, I remember thinking by year's end that his traditional line of 21-93-.306 was the modern-day equivalent of Lee Mazzilli's 1979 (15-79-.303) and was surprised when David finished as high as he did for MVP, let alone NL East MVP.

Dickey finished 14th in NL MVP voting in 2012, fourth among NL Easterners, behind Wright, LaRoche and Craig Kimbrel. Both Washington and Atlanta made the playoffs.

Re: QUIZ: NL East MVPs 1969-2017

It seems kind of stinky that Lee Mazzilli didn't get any MVP votes in '79. It's a miserly complaint for a year when the co-winner shouldn't have even been in the picture, but it's kind of stinky.

Re: QUIZ: NL East MVPs 1969-2017

Years when no Mets received MVP votes; all of them involved losing recrods:

1962, 1963, 1965, 1966
1974, 1977*, 1978, 1979
1980, 1981, 1982
1992, 1993, 1995
2002, 2003, 2004, 2009
2013, 2017

*Tom Seaver received one point, approximately a third of which can be pro-rated to his pre-June 15 tenure if you are so inclined.

Twenty-eight National Leaguers recieved MVP votes in 1979, rendering Lee Mazzilli, at least in the eyes of the BBWAA, no more than the 29th most valuable player in the NL that year.
