Ugh Adam Lind

Possible FA target for the Mets, sez ESPN.

Pass. I don't see the sense in bringing in another lefty 1B and stifling Smith in the process.

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

The Mets are reportedly interested in _____________ because they are not completely committed to left-handed prospect Dominic Smith at first base following his underwhelming performance in his first taste of the majors last season, per Mark Puma of the New York Post.

Is this like the fourth time Puma has gotten some mileage out of the underwhelming
performance of Smith so far this month or is it my imagination?

Well, if Joey Votto is available Smith can go play at AAA until we trade him. I don't see the sense in a mediocre lefty either.

if the Mets bring in a mediocre player he should be a platoon guy and a right-handed hitter (and presumably thrower) who can play 3rd in a pinch would be even better - i think its pretty clear the Mets are going to have infield needs in 2018. it is less clear where the biggest needs will be so position flexibility seems paramount to me right now, unless you are bringing in a clear star.

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

he's "among the names" they'll consider until they look at his splits and think "no thanks"

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

He's been darn good three of the last four years. If the terms are good, then he's got the potential to be an upgrade or an effective reserve.

Comparable to Duda as a starter or the lefty off the bench they haven't really had.

Yes, you're right. All the current stories about Lind (including Buster Olney's a day or so ago) are based on a speculative column by Puma back around Nov 4th. He was the one who domed the teapot and other sources have been letting it simmer. They've jumped all over it because they haven't been able to come up with any rumors of their own.

yeah no.

Over the last four years Duda has a wRC+ of 86 against lefties, and Lind has had a 49. Duda's been worth 7.4 fWAR and Lind has been worth 4.2 123 wRC+ to 117. Duda has him 3 SB to 1 too. Duda's pretty much better all around except Lind gets more singles but Lind is unplayable against lefties and Duda generally doesn't kill you there at least.

If Lind was a righty and you wanted to give Smith liberal days off until he can prove himself, fine. But as a meh platoon guy that only plays one position? Waste of a bench spot especially if the Mets might be playing that short. I'd rather see the Mets work out Plawecki and d'Arnaud there occasionally, and do the C-1B thing.

Really? We're talking about stolen bases?

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

The Mets have too many bigger needs. Plus, Dominic Smith might not have a .218 BABIP next season.

Unless and until they take a step forward offensively (and both hit encouragingly well down the stretch), I think the Mets have other options for righthanded firstbasemen, but sure. Versatility is beautiful.

Adam Lind might not excite many fans, but he can hit and he is darn cheap.

And that's why I tempered my remarks with "If the terms are good."

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

He can also play the outfield in a pinch. Not saying that I am wowed by the idea of having him but he could at least be a bat offa the bench.

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

If they're signing Adam Lind it's likely to be as part of a platoon with someone else (RH) and with the idea of Smitty being given an extra year in AAA.
Lind, unlike some of the more accomplished FAs, could be had for one year only so it wouldn't force a fish/cut-bait decision with Dom quite yet.

Also, I'm beginning to suspect that about 75% of this 1st base talk is an attempt to light a fire under Dom's ass. Not that they won't trade him -- higher draft picks have been dealt away and
much sooner in their pro timeline -- but to do so now seems like a selling-low kind of thing which you only do once you're convinced it'll only get lower.

Dom Smith -- first 183 ML PAs - Age 22: 198/262/395; K-rate = 29%
Aaron Judge -- first 95 ML PAs - Age 24: 179/.263/345; K-rate = 50%
Mike Schmidt -- first 483 ML PAs - Age 22/23: 197/324/367; K-rate = 38%

Just sayin'

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

We could avoid all of this guessing by just asking Eno Sarris how Dom's career will pan out.

It's more of a kimono than a sari, but I couldn't resist.

I wonder if Eno Sarris hangs with Voros McCracken.

Re: Ugh Adam Lind

it's not eno saris, but dan szymborski's ZiPS projections are out for the '18 mets as currently constituted. included in there, about halfway down the page, is a listing of historically comparable players for each player in the projection. (presuming at their current age, though i'm not well-versed in how it's run)

the #1 comp for Dominic Smith is....
...
...
wait for it....
...
Adam Lind.

so, why bring him in if we've already got him!

(for whatever that's worth. notably, the #1 comp for noah is doc gooden.)

The problem is that Adam 1.0 didn't have his first full, productive season until 25, after a few partial or unproductive seasons. And then his productivity disappeared again until he was 29. That suggests a lot of waitin' on Smitty, who most projections are targeting for a 2018 of mid .700s OPS-ing.

That may be taken as a necessary part of his growth, but it's not particularly gonna get you where you wanna go. So another mature option may be a good way to hedge against that.

I'll sign up for Smith turning into Lind if Syndergaard can be Gooden without cocaine.
