When you want mystical acoustic guitars filtered and echoey just so, and a toney, toney etherial electric lead guitar slathered over that, with a soft-but-strong reflective vocal, as if Lindsey Buckingham had found new residence in the desert down under, well then you go to the Church. But which is your Church of choice?

“Reptile” is a glorious slice of the 1980s. This Lutheran had never heard it until it was on a compilation disc I picked up. Grabbed me at the opening notes!

Happy reformiversary. I'm not seeing your vote in there, though.

Not really my thing, but that Milky Way song always struck me as pretty.

Oops, all fixed. The 500th anniversary is pretty cool. We should have uniform patches or something for Sunday mornings. Instead we had a potluck, which is how we commemorate everything. But they're good potlucks. We have those down pat!

This is the first time I can recall listening to them. I only listen to radio when in my car, and there are only a few music stations pre-buttoned.

Hm. What if you're an atheist?

You are welcome to the potluck. Bring a dessert.

My guess is that "Metropolis" is probably your jam.

Is The Church pre or post The Cure?
|
Edgy MD Nov 17 2017 05:13 PM Re: Which Church Do You Go To? |
Founded four years after the Cure (1980 vs. 1976) but otherwise pretty contemporary. Had a handful of releases that didn't really catch on outside of Australia and New Zealand before getting some US Traction in the 1986-1991 era (the U2 pocket), before fading (but remaining intact) and returning to an Australian specialty the last few decades.

Under the Milky Way for sure. That is a great song.

Indeed it is. In the mystical key of A-minor.

I hear some The Cure in that Metropolis and oddly The Cult as well.

Things I didn't know until learning about them in 2017: that there was a band called 'The Church'

They are one of those bands whose signature US song and the only one the casual fan has ever heard is also pretty hard to beat.

Never heard of them.

There still is. Here's a latter-day track. It's performed live in Seattle, so of course they had to tune down.

One of my favourite bands so tough call for me but I went with Reptile

Great minor key riffs in that song. I've only just recently realized that it seems to literally be about a reptile, perhaps a croc or snake that someone has foolishly taken in as a pet.
