If you are like me, you like the old stuff. Sirius XM Channel 4 is Holiday Traditions...40's 50's and 60's. That era unfortunately includes Santa Baby and the Beach Boys shit but mostly I've heard great stuff, Dean Martin, Perry Como, instrumentals, etc. Today I heard two songs from Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!

And I have a volume control button for the crap.

I've done a song parody, Sandy Baby, a few times. Even "sang" it (And I can't sing) on Steve Sommers' WFAN radio show one year.
I'll pass this year. Too many needs to get the rhymes right.

OK, I busted out the old playlist for a spin and annual add-ons.

New xmas albums this year from Cheap Trick (!!), Hanson (a second one??) and Herb Alpert. Trick includes a hot take on Kinks' Father Christmas; and the Hanson one manages to improve McCartney's awful "Wonderful Christmastime" (a little). The Alpert one is easy, put it on a decorate a tree.

Kinda disappointed in channel 4. They play about five different songs but by different artists. They do throw in a gem once in a while. So far my favorite is Doris Day's "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm"

Here's one from 2015 that I discovered this year. I have only a vague idea who Kylie Minouge is. But I saw the duet with Iggy Pop (!!!!) for "Christmas Wrapping" and found the disc in my library. It's good! I mean, "Santa Baby" is awful. But the originals are surprisingly good.

I'm not sure how the world needs another "Christmas Wrapping" or "Only You." They're two songs done so wonderfully the first time, nobody ever gets sick o' them. Give an unproven song a chance, Kylie. Some misfit songwriter needs a break.

Willing to bet all the ice in the freezer that she has her own tortured version of "Hallelujah."

Re: Holiday Music

One of my all-time favorite holiday albums is David Crowder Band’s “Oh, for Joy.” Will post the cover later.

Crowder is a quirky guy, and doesn’t do things the way you expect. But it’s always good. “Angels We Have Heard on High” becomes a stomping bluegrass sing along, “Go tell it on the Mountain” is a slow and hushed. My favorite is “The First Noel,” which starts with a simple guitar and gently builds and builds to a triumphant climax.

Definitely worth a listen. Will post a song when I have access to something other than my phone.

Doris is awesome! I have an “old school” Christmas playlist with classics from her, Bing, Frank, Ella, Louis Armstrong — it’s a sound so many artists try to copy today and can’t capture the magic.

I've done that at our company's holiday karaoke party because the man's part can basically be spoken rather than sung. If you ever get to hear me sing, you'll realize what a good idea that is.

I remember watching this TV show every year. It told the story of the writing of one of my favorites:

Here’s something fun I stumbled on a while back. It’s sort of an emo Christmas CD, and I don’t like much of it. But the first cut is really good. Love Spirials Downward is the band — sounds pretty emo — but the band does a cover of “Welcome Christmas” from The Grinch.

It’s a very light, airy delivery. I love it. It’s very different from everything else on the CD.

That's it!

Here's the rest off the songs. The disc is titled: Excelsis: A Dark Noel. And, it's not false advertising. The first cut from Arcanta is OK. But "Welcome Christmas" is far and away the best thing. There is a sequel with a white cover, but nothing jumps out at me on that one. But they're still better than the Melissa Etheridge Christmas disc.

1. Carol Of The Bells - Arcanta
2. Welcome Christmas From Dr. Suess' How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Love Spirals Downward
3. Oh Come All Ye Faithful - FuchiKachis Ethu
4. Carol Of The Bells - This Ascension
5. O Come Emmanuel - Area
6. The First Noel - Thanatos
7. Jingle Bells (Snowblower) - Loveliescrushing
8. What Child Is This? - Balderas & Osborn
9. Chanukkah, Oh Chanukkah - Black Tape For A Blue Girl
10. The Little Drummer Boy - Sorrow
11. We Three Kings - Lycia/The Unquiet Void
12. O Holy Night - Eva O
13. A Winter Wassail - Faith And The Muse
14. Stille Nacht (G)Rave Remix - Autopsia
15. Silent Night - Attrition

Here’s another fun one. The B-side to John and Yoko’s “Happy X-Mas” is a Yoko song called, “Listen, the Snow is Falling.”

Now, I can’t name another Yoko song that I like. But I think this one is beautiful. I don’t think snow falling makes a sound, but if it did, it would sound like this. I like the subtle sleigh bells, the bells, the sparse chords.

Because she mentions the Empire State Building, I can justify putting it in my New York Christmas songs playlist.

Binky Griptite, one of the Dap Kings (not sure which he is in the picture) is now running a weekly radio show on WFUV / 90.7 and online
I haven't checked it out yet (it's been running maybe six months now) but 'THE BOOGIE DOWN' airs Saturday nights from 8-11 and recent shows are available via their on-line archives.

From the FUV website: Binky is known as a soul man, but has varied tastes you'll hear on the show. Soul and funk are the common threads that run through all the music. Expect horns and organs, but also banjos and rock guitars (every once in a while) too. As the newly minted DJ himself says, "I'm really interested in helping the soul bands that are coming up now. I'll play their records right next to the classic hits and the rare grooves, that's how we'll keep real music alive, by spreading the word about the bands and labels that are doing good work."

I like the Very Special Christmas compilations, which benefit Special Olympics in addition to bringing some holiday cheer.

They all have some good songs, but the first one is far and away the best in terms of star power and quality songs.

1. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" The Pointer Sisters
2. "Winter Wonderland" Eurythmics
3. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Whitney Houston
4. "Merry Christmas Baby." Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
5. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Pretenders
6. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" John Cougar Mellencamp
7. "Gabriel's Message" Sting
8. "Christmas in Hollis" Run-D.M.C.
9. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" U2
10. "Santa Baby" Madonna
11. "The Little Drummer Boy" Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
12. "Run Rudolph Run" Bryan Adams
13. "Back Door Santa" Bon Jovi
14. "The Coventry Carol" Alison Moyet
15. "Silent Night" Stevie Nicks

Any compilation is going to have ups and downs. Bon Jovi's "Back Door Santa" is so cringe-worthy that it's been replaced on recent pressings. Stevie Nicks wrestles "Silent Night" to the ground. And, well, "Santa Baby," though it is perfect for Madonna in full Material Girl mode.

But The Pretenders' melancholy "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is perfect, U2 does Darlene Love proud, and the Eurythmics nail "Winter Wonderland." And Run DMC brings home the only original with "Christmas in Hollis." Good stuff!

Isaak is fun, if only to get slightly varied versions of Elvis and Orbison. Almost all of his selections are of the over-played, over-recorded, mid-century, cheesy variety, but he adds gravity and romance to the cheese somehow. I guess that's part of what he does.

Here's the only song, I think, that Monkees performed live on the show.

Nice singing by the Monkees there.

I'm giving you guys the gift of having streamed the cheesily named (NOT SO) SILENT NIGHT by REO Speedwagon and can report it's a terrible holiday album. They perform all the classics in an attempt to trick you into buying into this idea that "Hey! REO Speedwagon can rock ANYTHING! That's how rockin' they are!" but boy does it suck. I can name a dozen more satisfyingly rocked versions of nearly every track on here, and of course they don't ALL rock, they also want to demonstrate their awesome dexterity with vocals and country and family-friendliness and what-not. What a fucking mess.
