Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

Nice win over Maryland yesterday. 6-0 on this young season with Kansas lurking on Saturday.

I feel like yesterday's game was exactly the type of game last year's team would have lost. Good opponent, shooting it well, our star player hurt, we would have had no chance.

But these guys battled hard, played good defense. It's still going to be a rebuilding year, and they will get smoked by Kansas, but some good pieces on this team.

Battle has been playing like a stud. Brissett is beast on the boards, and if his shot starts falling, he can be very good. His aggressiveness is a breath of fresh air after four years of Tyler Roberson. Howard looks good. Wish his jumper were a bit stronger, but otherwise strong. But I'm most excited about the centers. Sidibe can play a little, and can even put it on the floor. Chukwu is a completely different player than the guy who looked lost last year. I think they have the potential to be very strong in the middle. I like what the future holds for Sidibe.

Obviously, next year is the big year. Battle is gone, but the rest of the guys will form a solid base to add to the star recruiting class.

Nice win over ex-rival UConn yesterday at MSG! [high fives everyone else in the thread, realizes it's just me]

I guess it was unrealistic to think we could take down #2 Kansas, but it was nice to get wins over Maryland and UConn.

I like what I'm seeing from Oshae Brissett so far. He seems like he could be a player.

Was bummed I couldn't get out to MSG yesterday to watch it. Had a work event I couldn't get out of. Makes me want to re-think my priorities.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

Made it a few minutes into the 2nd half and ran out of gas, due to being a tired old man. So far, so good though. I enjoy seeing young players do well. I only wish more of them would stay for 2-3 years.

YOUR Stony Brook Seawolves beat the heck out of the Columbia... Columbians (?) last night, thereby winning the imaginary bet between me and Vic and TMF and D-Dad.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

This year's team has all the right parts in place... length on the wings, size at guards and a couple of big dudes in the middle to anchor it. They're just young and inexperienced. It would be great to have a couple of dependable shooters, but if this team can keep getting rebounds and clamp down on defense, they can probably win 20 games that way, right?

With their length and quickness, I'd love to see them get back to forcing turnovers and getting out on the break at every opportunity. That's fun to watch.

Nice to see Moyer have a big game against UConn too.

Still nice to beat Georgetown!

What a comeback win. Love the game of Oshae Brisset. I think he's going to be a good one. Frank Howard gets better every game. And Battle. Too bad he'll be gone after this year but it's fun to watch him.

It's such a weird feeling to be happy about sports. I almost don't recognize it.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

Cuse needs to go 6-5 the rest of the way to get to 20 wins, and hopefully they can get there.

If anything, it's been nice to see the development of players like Brissett, Howard, Dolezaj, and especially Chukwu. All those guys looked great vs BC last night.

Of course, they're pretty much the only guys who played...

Warming up of late. The broadcasters project them as an #11 seed. They still have four games against top 20 ACC opponents (NC, Duke, Clemson, and Virginia), so they've got their work cut out for them.

It's only the Sweet 16, but for this club, it feels like they made the Final Four.

Gotta hand it to these guys. 7 scholarship players, 3 of them logging full games every day, 3 games in 5 days. Absolute grit. Very proud of this team.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

I never liked 'Cuse basketball (it was a UCONN Big East thing).
But these guys are OK.
I'll be rooting for any team that can knock off Kansas because of the easy path the committee gave them to the Championship (three games in their home state, with anticipated easy competition.)

While I'm happy for the CPF/Syracuse contingent here, that game really
dicked up one of my pool entries. Thanks, thanks a lot.

Busted Obama's bracket, too. Didn't he have Michigan State winning it all?

Not mine! I am playing in Diamond Dad's pool along with 82 other people and I'm sitting in 3rd overall, though since I had Virginia winning it all I don't know how well I can finish. I did have SU beating MSU, for what it's worth.

I have two entries in DD's too, I'm like 12th and 14th or so but within
some striking distance with a bunch of the 16 still alive. I have to admit,
if it wasn't for the pools I'd watch very little of the tourney.

7 scholarship players, two of them playing through injury!

This team fights hard and never gives up. And as ugly as the games can be, it's easy to root for these players.

I love watching the zone at work. Imagine if we had a reliable 3pt shooter. Or could get out and run a little bit.

Also we are really gonna miss JB when he's gone.

Me! Me!
There are some schools I root for or against because I know people who went there.
And then sometimes there are schools I would like to see win because the "experts" didn't pick them.
And sometimes there are schools I would like to see lose because the experts picked them, and tried to fix the brackets and seedings to make it happen.
In other words, I don't need no steenking pools.
I'm a fan.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

I watch a fair amount of of the tournament games, particularly the final 10 minutes of the close, competitive games. There have been some compelling comebacks and last second game, winning shots. It's fun seeing the "underdogs" knocking off so many of the big programs.

Syracuse put together a great run in the tournament and damn near added Duke to their list of tournament victims. I didn't think either team shot the ball very well, but it was a highly competitive, hard fought game that went right down to the wire and could have gone either way. As a Duke fan, I was happy to get the win last night, but Syracuse made it very tough to score. Congratulations to Syracuse for a good season and a very tough game last night.

Hopefully, Duke can take out Kansas on Sunday. It should be a good game.

Tough to ask for much more than this group of players gave us this season. What a wacky frustrating awesome fun year.

I don't really feel like Battle or Brissett are gonna leave early, so the team should be a lot better next year.

(please don't leave school you guys, come on now you have unfinished business and all that)

Joe Schultz.
The state that cut funding to schools, healthcare and social services does not deserve the glory of a championship.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

Well, it was a hell of a game, but Duke came up a little short against Kansas. When Duke had the ball with 25.9 seconds left in regulation and the score tied, I felt pretty good. However, when Grayson Allen's contested floater in the lane bounced all around the rim without going in, I had a sense of foreboding going into the overtime. Going to the 2-3 zone in mid February transformed Duke's season, but unfortunately, they don't play it quite as effectively as the Orange. Duke never got going from the perimeter and Kansas (mainly Malik Newman) got hot from 3 in the second half, which was the big difference in a tight game.

Sorry, MFS62. I suspect Villanova will take care of Kansas for you. Villanova looks like the best team in the tournament to me.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

So this Michael Porter Jr. guy from the University of Missouri has declared himself eligible for the NBA draft despite playing just one season in college and despite having that season limited to just [u:c6nb0d3z]53 minutes played[/u:c6nb0d3z]
due to various injuries. Now I certainly don't have a problem with this as I don't believe these guys should even be forced to pretend to be college students for a year in order to make a living at something that they're
clearly capable of doing without the campus stop-off in between.

Instead, my question is this: During however long his pro career lasts, is he going to be introduced at the beginnings of games as being "from The University of Missouri" despite the fact that I've taken naps which
lasted longer than the time he spent on the college hardwood?

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

I have no idea.

Back when I actually watched thungs like pregame I think they announced everyone's college, but that was before the one and done era. Plenty of NFL players anounce their high schills even though they all spent 2 years minimum in school.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

That was mostly just a DMPJFL (dumbass message posted just for laughs) -- Of course they're going to tout that he's from Mizzou for the entire length of his career.
Despite commish Silver's stated interest in doing something about the whole 'one and done' process, the NBA has an interest in maintaining the idea that all they're players are from the University of Somewhere --
as opposed to just plain old Springfield or Shelbyville -- whether that university career lasted four years or a mere half hour.

The high school stuff at the beginning of football games was nothing more than the result of what happens when you allow the players to freelance a bit. Official announcements and network voices will always
tell you where each player went to college as the NFL has an even greater interest in having college viewed as their one and only feeder system. The last player to play substantially but not come through
college might have been Otis Sistrunk.

Re: Orange Basketball - 2017-2018

The NFL will no doubt be tied to college forever, because there are no other goos options.

Meanwhile, basketball is being played around the world and US high school kids are starting to see the fun and dollar signs in playing in Europe or Australia for a year rathet than pretend to be an unpaid amateur

I think we need a clarification from KC, who I think originated this phrase.

Is it:

DMPJFL
dumbass message posted just for laughs

or

DPMJFL
dumbass post mean just for laughs

Cuz if it's the first, I've been saying it wrong for like 20 years.

JCL (in a former guise) was actually the originator of this one. I remember it as DMPJFL, but I suppose it really doesn't matter seeing as both essentially mean the same thing.

This was from back in the early MoFo days when the software treated each post as a separate entry on the screen so sometimes posters would add a simple (nm), for 'no message', or sometimes (nt), for
'no take', to the subject heading to indicate that the revised message in their subject heading said all they had to say on the topic at hand.
To that extent, a bunch of other parenthetical shorthand versions were proposed (none of them intending to be actually serious) so as to make scanning the page easier. DMPJFL was one of those.
This was also where WATP (Wild Ass Trade Proposal) came from (that one was mine). I recall it involved some guidelines where if you were to propose any deal that involved (something like) six or more
players, three or more teams, or any deal that included the phrase "and throw in a coupla prospects" then you had to give a WATP warning on your post because it had ZERO chance of actually happening.

Others that I can recall that didn't stand the test of time quite as well:
(AA) stood for 'Agenda Advancement' so that if Ms. Met was going to argue for better DEFENSE!!!! or BatMags was going to blame Jeff Wilpon for something they should put an (aa) next to their post because it
would save the rest from actually having to read the post since we'd heard their angle a hundred times before and therefore already knew what they were going to say.
(BVF) - The loss was entirely Bobby V's fault. Used by some following 99% of all NYM losses.
(NBF) - We won the game therefore it was Not Bobby's Fault (nor was the win to his credit)
PR and AR - Pro or anti-Rey. You had to be one or the other in those days.

In the early days of emoticons (emojis) not all boards were able to handle/ display them.
On at least two of those baseball boards, IWTH was used to indicate "Insert winkie thingie here".
