2017 CPF Charity Gift Exchange

A Boy Named Seo

Alas, today is a thing called "Giving Tuesday" and it rattled my brain to recall our long-running tradition of the CPF charity gift exchange.

It's been a cool way to learn about, and kick a few greenback$, to some cool organizations doing important work in many of our communities.

If you're down, say so here. Same rules as always!

Re: 2017 CPF Charity Gift Exchange

Just before her 10th birthday, my awesome little niece was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Shook us all as we have no family history, and we all had to crash-course T1D to keep the kid safe and healthy every day. She's a little champ, learning to get the pricks and shots every day, but it's a huge life-changer for her and her parents (and unkie, too, who's become pretty good at the shot-giving, I gotta say).

My charity this year is JDRF. We participated in a fund-raising walk last month and raised some good $$ for them, but I'm hoping the extra $20 bucks from the CPF will put them over-the-top to getting that cure.

I heard the guy who started that organization on Bill Simmons' podcast a little while back. He was a reformed slimy guy who turned out to be the biggest teddy bear ever. After hearing this interview, I did a birthday "Don't buy me a gift, give to this charity instead" and chose his org. My sweet gf at the time, her $5 bucks was the only donation, but our black hearts were in the right place.

Re: 2017 CPF Charity Gift Exchange

Thank you Rockin Doc. RMHC in Hershey is beautiful. They housed and pampered my daughter, her husband and her two year old daughter for several weeks before my grandson was born in 2015. He was a very high risk pregnancy. She was totally mobile, but had to be close (across the street!) from Hershey Children's Hospital at all times until he was born, and luckily the potential danger did not happen.

When he was one year old, he returned to Hershey for surgery and RMHC would have been their home away from home again, but fortunately, his surgery was so successful that they returned home in only two days :D

But I will never forget the welcoming feeling of going there with her to check it out, her nervous tears when I came to pick up my granddaughter before baby boy was born, and the friends and support they got there from the staff and other tenants.

Rockin Doc you have been my friend for a long time. I thank you again. xo

A friend of a friend started a charity here in Cleveland called Trials for Hope, which provides personal items not otherwise covered by food stamps (soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.) to the needy. Happy to add them to the gift exchange.

Cool! My wife does this same kind of thing, she never left a hotel room in her life without a full complement of free toiletries to donate when we get home. She's like Ceetar that way, you know, light fingered.

Thank you to the most charitable pervert in Metfandom!

Dear Edgy,

Thank you. You are wonderful.

People facing heart disease need you. And now you're there. Today, you are why.

You are why the next baby will live to see her first birthday. You are why a dad will be able to walk his daughter down the aisle. You are why a mom will be there to celebrate her son's graduation. You are why grandparents will celebrate their anniversaries for years to come.

Because there are so many stories of heartbreak and hope, there are so many reasons why. Thank you for acting on yours today.

I'm wonderful!

Just wanted to say "Thank you" again for supporting Pack Your Back. We spent a long and exhausting day in Flint on Saturday, but it was all worth it when you see the smiles on the faces of the kids picking out their toys. You'll see a couple familiar faces in the video.

The college kids and Little Miss Flint's family gathered toys and school supplies and coats, but also had some activities so families had something to do while waiting for their turn in the toy room. Once in the room, the kids were allowed to pick out one large toy and two smaller ones. One little guy picked out a girl's toy from the big toy section, saying, "My sister will love this." Everyone was so touched that even though he could have picked out a toy for himself, he was thinking about his sister.

More than 500 families were helped, and leftover toys went to the local children's hospital and school supplies to Flint schools.

Thanks again!

Going with a small hometown charity this year called CHOP.

If someone wants to add a late entry and swap with me that'd be great.
Otherwise, next week I'll send an additional $25 to Caring For The Home-
less Of Peekskill for my CPF CGE17.

Donation made to CHOP, Kong.

This is a great idea and I donated as well. Clean and safe water for all.

Turns out water.org is a completely different charity than the one I thought it was (which is charity:water - still a good org and interview). Regardless! Donation made to the correct charity, water.org!
