Eli on The Shelf

Giants bench Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith. Last Giant not named Eli Manning to start at QB was Kurt Warner in 2004. So it's been a while.

I guess the Giants are trying to ensure a top draft pick by making sure Eli can't accidentally win games. Geno gives them a better shot at losing!

If those circumstances were "a league filled with spread offenses and college defenses", sure.

Francesa went on an epic rant over this , it's out there are easy to fine on twitter , worth a listen, if for nothing else than the absurdity of the whole thing ....all of a sudden Eli is loved?

I've heard about 5 minutes of talk radio on this today and it reminds me of the Wee Willie "Cowards in the Night" coverage.

Re: Eli on The Shelf

Yeah, I don't really get this "the way the Giants are treating him" angle on things although maybe there's something here I'm missing.
He started 210 games in a row, more than his brother, more than twice the number of the next current streak, and more than anyone else in the history of the game not named Favre.
And now he won't be starting on Sunday after (rightfully IMO) turning down the opportunity to start and then be pulled just to keep the streak going.

Was there a different way this was supposed to end? With flowers? ... a Hallmark card? ... cut him outright?

Re: Eli on The Shelf

with the 'next QB' not a garbage retread that's just 'different'.

You let the guy finish out the year. There is zero benefit to playing Geno Smith.

Seems to me that when you are handing the ball to a guy the quarterback-less Jets passed on, that's not a good sign.

That said, if they want to give Eli to the Jets, I'd take him off the shelf.

But there's a difference between disagreeing with the team's decision and saying, as some seem to be doing, that they went about it the wrong way.
As JCL recalls, there was the firing of Willie and then there was the carping at Omar for doing it at 3 in the morning as if the latter was the bigger part of the story.

Re: Eli on The Shelf

With the Willie thing, hard not to feel like it was biased by reporters upset they were up so late.

In this case 'the wrong way' seems to be synonymous with 'the wrong decision' But also I guess since he's won 2 Super Bowls there's a certain bit of respect he's earned and all the "letting a guy go out on his own terms" stuff.

But perhaps similarly to Omar, to which fans/media I guess had soured on by that point, it's really about how they think the guy making the decision is doing. It's a "you can't fire yourself so you're making a mess"

Re: Eli on The Shelf

i guess hte outrage is of a sense of, "if you're gonna bench him, do you hafta bench him for THAT guy?"

"that guy" being considered a garbage quarterback, i suppose, by those who think they know these things.

NYGiants are even better and smarter about sucking than the Jets.

Re: Eli on The Shelf

John Mara likes to take bows about how "classy" his organization is, and IIRC was fairly vocal in the whole National Anthem issue, so he has to take a hit here. If the organization is going to make this kind of move, He has to be in the room with Reese and Doo when they tell Eli; he can't hide and be "unavailable". And I am a big "owner should let the football people make football decisions" but Eli has earned a face to face from all three.

And this guy was my next door neighbor when he came to the Jets (actually, they were the Titans of New York back then) from that other team. That cemented my fandom for the new team in town.
