Russia

Apart from dopeing US elections, Russia dopes international competitions, and have now been banned as a nation from the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Curiously, they've included a loophole through which demonstrably clean Russian athletes can compete, not under the Russian flag, but as OAR ("Olympic Athlete from Russia") status. Presumably, instead of "Patrioticheskaya Pesnya," medal-winning athletes will take to the podium to the tune of "Shattered (Turn the Car Around)."

Re: Russia

So Russia can host international events -- the upcoming World Cup and the most recent Winter Olympics -- they just can't participate in the up coming one.

Re: Russia

The IOC doesnt get a say in who can host the world cup, both organanizations are corrupt but distinct entities.

I am aware.
It's just that, as usual, these international (and often national; see: NCAA) organizations put more emphasis on pretending that the athletes stay "pure" than they do on themselves and with whom they do business.
Tough sometimes to find dirt when you spend all your working life in five star hotels.

Re: Russia

Russia is aiding North Korea with oil imports, undercutting international attempts at isolation.

Totalitarianism must be allowed to survive, it seems.

Well, the North Korean regime is the heir to Stalin's legacy, right?

Well, I don't think NK is alone in that regard, but yeah.

What I'm concerned about is this new age of totalitariansim. And we're getting in the Northern Hemisphere what has too often happened in Africa, an international fraternity of strongmen that, while they may rattle sabres (and if forced, even go to war) against each other's countries, actually has a stake in propping up one another.
