British woman is making a few bob as an advertising copywriter, when the wartime shortage gets her suddenly drafted into helping script a film to promote the war effort. Finding the world of propaganda films to be hamfisted and ridiculous, she takes the bull by the horns, navigating an unfamiliar environment to turn around a shit production just as Britain is turning the war around.
In the end, what you get is an old-fashioned picture about making an old-fashioned picture. And hey, it's got Bill Nighy, so you know it's not all bad.
