Division Opponents for 2018: Atlanta Braves

Been quiet in Braves town so far ... except for that whole crooked GM getting banned for life thing couple with the loss of nine amateur signings.
So I guess for them it hasn't really been quiet enough.

But that dam burst today with news that they've re-traded Matt Kemp back to the Dodgers (didn't they already have too many aging OF'ers?) in exchange for Adrian Gonzalez, pitchers Scott Kazmir and Brandon McCarthy, infielder Charlie Culberson and cash considerations. No doubt the cash is to help pay for Gonzalez although what they plan to do with him eludes me. Freddie as a full-time 3B?!?

This one is going to take a while to sort out although I suspect this trade may just be the first in a series of moves involving at least some of these players.

Kemp for four guys PLUS cash?

That's a lot of guys not worth their contracts. I'm not sure any of these guys should bother unpacking their bags.

Gonzalez has apparently already been DFAed. The Dodgers are trying to get under the luxury cap threshold to be in a better spending position for next offseason. I'm not sure what value the Braves think they're getting.

Freddie Freeman's Fulltime Flip to Fird has been cancelled. We now return to your previously scheduled program.

Re: Division Opponents for 2018: Atlanta Braves

The Braves have been involved in more than their fair share of these multi-player/high-contract swaps in recent years as they seem to lurch back and forth between GMs and organizational strategies.
This is even the second trade of that type involving Kemp who they originally got in mid-2016 by dumping off the $60 million dollar contract of Cuban import Hector Olivera, a guy/contract they had acquired just a year earlier (from LAD) in a three-team / [u:3smb3shf]13 player[/u:3smb3shf] trade!!

So, the Braves just decided they were going to pay the Dodgers' bills this year?

Don’t look now but the Braves are on their way to 9-5 record, leading the Cubs 10-3 in the seventh at Wrigley

Except that that game, which had been 9-1, 10-2, and, as noted above, 10-3, is now 10-10
Cubs batting, bases loaded, two outs, bottom 8.

Looks to be about 12 degrees at Wrigley ... but at least it's really windy.

Cubs 14 Braves 10 in the ninth. The wind must be blowing in the Braves' faces.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 14 2018 04:04 PM

That bases loaded situation was followed up with a bases-loaded walk, followed by a bases loaded (4 pitch) walk, then a pitching change which results in, not just a 1st pitch/wild-pitch, but a 1st pitch WP with
two errors tacked which came thisclose to being a bases-clearing WP (Braves threw the ball to every point in the yard except to their own fielders) ... so it's safe to say that this one is getting away from the Braves.

14-10 Cubs as they head to the 9th.

Braves sign Joey Bats to a minor league contract, apparently with the intention of working him in as a 3b-man.
He last played 3rd regularly with the Pirates back in 2007. Hasn't played there at all since 2011.

Four Game Series in Atlanta: April 19-22

Braves (10-7) spent most of the early the season leading the NL in run scoring although have now slipped to 2nd place behind the Pirates. Are tied for 4th best at preventing runs.

1B - Freddie (aka: FFF) -- he left Wednesday night's game after taking one off the wrist but has apparently passed all the tests and been cleared to play
2B - Ozzie Albies -- one of the top prospects coming into the year looks to be the real deal early on: .307/.333/[u:w1jjeexl].640[/u:w1jjeexl]. 14 of his 23 hits have been for XB
SS - Dansby Swanson -- .358/.394/.582 ... seems to be over his 2nd year slump which landed him back in the minors in 2017
3B - Ryan Flaherty -- the career .222 hitting ex-Oriole is stroking .365/.450/.500 so far as a Brave, although yesterday they signed Jose Bautista with the strict intention of playing him at 3rd base after some minor league time

LF - Preston Tucker [.271/.321/.500] first time w/Braves after spending some time w/Houston in 2015-16
CF - Ender Inciarte -- great fielder, not hitting yet [.232/.280/.261]
RF - Nick Markakis -- still only 34, seems much older [.279/.372/.412]

C - Kurt Suzuki backed by non-hitting Carlos Perez now that Tyler Flowers is on the DL

Thursday - 7:35 (remember those later starting times)
Matt Harvey vs Matt Wisler (1st start of year)

Friday - 7:35
Syndergaard vs Sean Newcomb (L)

Saturday - 7:05
deGrom vs Julio Teheran

Sunday - 1:35
Zack Wheeler vs TBA

Braves to call up Ronald Acuna, their top prospect and one of the top prospects in all of baseball. He's expected to be in uniform, in the lineup, and in LF for tonight's game in Cincinnati.
Wasn't exactly tearing it up in AAA, but on the other hand he's been in AAA and won't turn 21 until December.

Re: Division Opponents for 2018: Atlanta Braves

While the Mets have their two top starters going at home in this mid-week series, Atlanta is a little short in the arms department, with Julio Teheran, Anibal Sanchez, and José Ramirez all on short-term DL stints. While this is seemingly well-timed, Teheran will be activated and start Game Two of this series. The others could follow.

Centerfielder and supa-prospect Ronald Acuña, Jr. has landed with a big splash, hitting .421 / .500 / .789 // 1.289 through his first 22 plate appearances. He's got four doubles, a homer, a stolen base, and after games, he gets to hang out in Cobb County. A.J. Ramos is reportedly already looking forward to walking him.

Unfortunately, he's not the only young dynamo with a name starting in A threatening folks from the top of the Braves' lineup. Second-year secondbaseman Ozzie Albies is ripping the ball to the tune of .293 / .341 / .647 // .988 over the season's first 27 games. His nine homers thus far eclipse anything he's done in the minors, so they may not be representative of his ability, but hey, they happened. Curaçao, you keep sending your best to Atlanta. What did we ever do to you?

When the Mets were in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago I was getting the sense that Ozzie Albies might turn out to be a long-term nuisance to the Mets.

Re: Division Opponents for 2018: Atlanta Braves

The Braves have given up on trying to make a thirdbaseman out of José Bautista again, or even trying to make a ballplayer, as he has been cut loose.

The Mets might be interested in auditioning him as an outfielder for a few weeks if the money is right, but he's likely donedy-done.

That was my first thought too, but dude's got nothing left in the tank.
