Re: Bowl / Not a Bowl ?

Two years ago my daughter and the marching band played at the Quick Lane Bowl, which used to be the Motor City Bowl. The following year they played at bowl in Miami, staying in an art deco hotel right on Miami Beach and got to frolic in the ocean.

Detroit is nice and getting better. But it's tough to beat Miami Beach in December.

If Dollarg General can afford to host a bowl game, I think they may want to
funnel some of that money to upkeep and maintenance. Our local store is dirty
and frankly disgraceful.

Re: Bowl / Not a Bowl ?

Assuming that those who decided to actually vote in this silly thing all picked the maximum five options, that means seven votes were cast.
Most of my more obvious fakeries were sniffed out, but every choice had at least one wrong answer and many of them had multiple wrong proving that the NCAA can still give me a run in the silliness department.

CHERIBUNDI TART CHERRY BOCA RATON BOWL — REAL (but five of you thought it was fake ... either that or you didn't follow the directions)
Cheribundi is some sort of cherry-based health drink that I've heard advertised on radio shows. It supposedly cures everything and helps you live forever.

FOSTER FREEZE MODESTO CITY BOWL — FAKE (4 voted fake)
Foster Freeze is a real Dairy Queen type of establishment found in California (that's why I put it in Modesto) and has been name-checked in Tom Waits songs, but they don't sponsor a bowl game ... at least not yet

DOLLAR GENERAL BOWL — REAL (1)

QUICK LANE BOWL — REAL (1)

WALK-ON’S INDEPENENCE BOWL — REAL (2)
Does this mean that only non-scholarship athletes can play?

WAFFLE HOUSE MAGNOLIA BOWL — FAKE (3)
I figured matching a waffle house with the southern tree might trick a few peeps

BAD BOY MOWERS GASPARILLA BOWL — REAL (3)
I'm afraid to ask

BELK BOWL — REAL (1)
Belk is a department store. No idea how often they get referred to as 'Belch' but I bet it's a lot

AMAZON FREE SHIPPING BOWL — FAKE (4)
We're AMAZON, we don't need to advertise

TOYOTA RISING SUN BOWL — FAKE (3)
There is a SUN BOWl and has been for years (I think in El Paso) but I made up the part about the Japanese sponsor and the rising sun part/

NOVA HOME LOANS ARIZONA BOWL — REAL (2)
A real home loans sponsor

BANK OF SEATTLE SUB-PRIME INTEREST BOWL — FAKE (6)
A not-so-real home loans sponsor - but maybe there was one of these prior to 2008. Maybe Fannie Mae had one too.

Belk is a highly capitalized IT Company at about 5 billion.

I only got two of five. I'm an easy mark.

Re: Bowl / Not a Bowl ?

Things (I think) I know about college football that (I think) are still true:

[*]If there's blue turf, it must be Boise State.
-- Yes. There's also a bright red turf field somewhere in that corner of the country. Washington State perhaps.

[*]Notre Dame wears blue and gold.
-- Yes, except when they don't. I believe they opt for stereotype-induced green on occasion, although I believe they've so far resisted the trend towards Nike-induced black

[*]Army plays Navy every year, but neither team is particularly relevant apart from that one afternoon.
-- True. The college media circus folks spend that afternoon pretending to care so as to keep up the appearance that they're not totally all-in on this being an age-group professional football league where each team is, for some unexplained reason, connected to a supposed institute of higher learning.

[*]Notre Dame plays Navy, BC, and Perdue every year.
-- Navy, yes, but I believe the others might have fallen by the wayside in recent years. ND sort of linked up with the ACC a few years back so about half their games come vs selected members of that crew.

[*]The alleged best player gets the Heisman.
-- The alleged best player on the team with the best sports information director gets the award, but only if his school is from a 'power conference'.

[*]That's almost always an offensive back or a wideout.
-- Nope. This award, like NFL MVPs and SB MVPs, is at least 99% QBs these days. Running backs are so 1970s

[*]The whole thing is ridiculous.
-- You spelled 'corrupt sewer' incorrectly.

Re: Bowl / Not a Bowl ?

The Red turf is at Eastern Washington.

And I don't believe ND is still playing Purdue every year. They do play USC and Stanford though.

Re: Bowl / Not a Bowl ?

Big 10 has contracted to keep Purdue on ND's schedule for the next 8 years. BTN Network is doing very well and TV contract talks start in 2024? and the revenue numbers have been increasing.

Big 10 is pushing hard to make Maryland and Rutgers an annual rivalry game played at Metlife for the Lincoln Tunnel Crapcake Tray Trophy game or such. Uggghh!

Rutgers natural enemy is Penn State. Each team and fans totally despise each other since 1976; NOT you Cooby.

Rooting for Penn St. to get destroyed this weekend knowing they are back and will likely dominate.
