Technical Support 2018

I'm doing a Win-10 update today on my oldest computer (+/- 5-6 yrs) and it's into
it's fourth hour. I hope it doesn't fuck things up.

Re: Technical Support 2018

Was it intentional, or was it forced upon you like mine was? I got messages suggesting I do it, but kept ignoring them. One day I tried to shut down and received them message "Don't turn off your computer. We are performing an update". That kind of thing happens occasionally when I shut down and didn't think much about it. Hours later, I realized it was Windows 10, and didn't want to stop it for fear it would crash my computer.
Anyhow, yes, it takes a long time and I'd guess how long depends on how much memory your computer has and your internet speed.

Re: Technical Support 2018

I have auto-update set on all my computers but for some reason this one got
turned off so, yes, it was intentional. You should always keep Windows up to date.

I'm having a video issue with this older computer because there is no Win10 video
driver available for it. I may shop for a new video card this week because the box
works fine for what I use it for.

Re: Technical Support 2018

this may matter to none of you, or it may be one of those "OHHHH now i get it!" moments like it was for me.

Do you play video games or otherwise download large files to a PS4 and its really friggin slow?

I don't know where it went but it is gone. Try and reload it. If you can't,
let me know and I'll manually set you up with something Seaveresque.

My Seaver avatar is toast?

Re: Technical Support 2018

Did you try and restore it as suggested?
If you ignore me I can't help you.

(it was back yesterday?)

Re: Technical Support 2018

Lazy question, does anyone know what setting(s) need to be changed to allow
those tweeted 'animated' lineups used in the IGT's work in Chrome and Firefox?
It was fine until a few weeks ago and all of a sudden they don't work on my computers.
Works fine on a Android tablet.

Re: Technical Support 2018

Doesn't look like KC ever got an answer to ^^ that ^^ question, eh?

My question is a simple one and one I pretty much already know the answer to, but I'll ask it anyway.
When a line suddenly appears on your computer screen (thin, horizontal, and clear across from end to end) that's essentially the first sign of the death rattle for that monitor, right?
I'm assuming that at some point it's likely to be joined by a companion line, and then another, and another, until it gets too annoying and buying a replacement becomes the better option than putting my fist into it.

I think that means a German captive cave maker tried to escape

Re: Technical Support 2018

And, now, the line has disappeared as suddenly as it appeared.
So maybe I was over-dramatizing this thing to begin with.

i dont think today's modern LED monitors are likely to have that issue - the video card, a shitty dvi-d/hdmi/vga cable, or a shitty converter (when trying to plug vga into a dvi port or whatever) are more likely culprits these days

Could be any and all of it. My most recent monitor death seemed to be the monitor, when I swapped it out the new one was fine. same cables, cards, everything.

I have thoughts but they're mostly knee-jerk "fuck Microsoft" ones. I don't get what niche the Surface fills that's not better on a straight tablet.

Some googling suggests that the drawing aspect is a big deal, and you can't get the same type of precision on a normal tablet, but it seems like there are plenty that are good for drawing.

Surface is more of a 'computer' where you have a little more free-range to control the OS/install things versus a more app-based tablet.

It seems like he probably knows better than me. It doesn't seem like he'll run into any walls with the Surface where he'll not be able to do something he wants though.

Re: Technical Support 2018

Like millions of people, I use Microsoft Outlook to manage my five email
accounts. Google is on a security kick today (this week, I don't know) and they
say third-party email clients like Outlook and Thunderbird don't meet their
security standards and allowing access should be turned off.

Does anyone care? Should I care?

security is good in general? Microsoft Outlook is a garbage application that I despise. You can usually root your email through gmail and manage it that way. Are they saying they are going to block it or that you should?

Re: Technical Support 2018

That you should. I like my setup and would miss it all being in one
place. I could go back to Thunderbird; I suppose at the end of the day
I trust Mozilla infinitely more than Microsoft.

Re: Technical Support 2018

I'm not seeing the news blurp you're referencing so I'm not sure of the specifics of the risk they're getting at. Whether it's people getting access to your email, just being able to maybe see some of it, or actually getting your password.

I always feel like stuff like this is a drop in the bucket of risk. Maybe it makes you slightly safer from this one angle, but that's probably far from secure.

Re: Technical Support 2018

Users of Chrome who use Google as their home page have a little
'security checup' blurb for Cyber Security Month. May have been there
for weeks, I only notticed it this morning.
