All Purpose threads

A timely plea, now that we're about to change years, about what I see as the use/overuse of 'All Purpose' threads, a battle I've been fighting (and losing) for years although I'm not giving up yet.
This is not a command -- which, considering that I hold no particular power on this board, wouldn't have any force behind it if it were -- just one's lad's opinion.
And you'll note that this discussion itself is being split off from another thread because I didn't want it infringing on, or getting lost within, the recently created thread on the tax bill which Ashie was bold enough to separate from the general Politics thread.

all purpose threads serve a great purpose - they are a great place for posts that aren't part of an ongoing topic and that you expect to garner few responses. these posts are better off in one place not cluttering the board.

I agree. Not every notice of the death of a minor celebrity needs his own thread and they have their uses elsewhere as well. And sometimes a topic within an A-P thread (David Cassidy) will unexpectedly grow on its own to the point where it merits a splitting off after the fact from one of the admins.
I'm just arguing (as I have in the past) that it's often overdone around here and that it results in perfectly legitimate topics getting stifled and/or lost amid a sea of crap.
'Hey, remember that great debate we had on Topic _____?'. Well now no one can find it because it took place during page 21-26, then parts of page 32, 33, 39 and 57 of that 268 page: All Purpose 'Shit that Happened in 2018' thread.

Worse yet, people here often seem afraid to venture out from the mundane or act as if they need special permission to start a new topic (Ya don't!). The dumbest thing heard around here after some new topic gets brought up, and yet I/we have heard it more than once over the years, is someone else saying that they were going to bring that very point up earlier but didn't say anything because they 'couldn't figure out where to put it'. How dull.

I had come to despise that 'Politics' thread not for the often harsh rhetoric it spawned but that it had become a mishmash of complaints and counter-complaints with all the organization of some hyperactive teen's bulletin board. And that doesn't even necessarily mean that we should forbid a 'Politics '18' thread, but I'd hope that no one feels like they're required to tack a discussion of the tax bill onto the same thread where the next Supreme Court nominee is being discussed which itself is intermingled with a debate on the latest middle-east crisis or of the separatist movement in Spain, and this would be a much better board if those weren't under one roof.

Be bold people. I just checked, and even Al Gore himself says that threads are not an endangered species. So it turns out we can use all we want and not harm the environment.

Re: All Purpose threads

When a sub-topic grows within another thread, your admins take great pains to break them off.

We like to meet you halfway.

Re: All Purpose threads

I’ll echo FK’a thoughts. Long threads are also intimidating. Sometimes you don’t feel like catching up on 6 pages of posts.

AP threads serve their purpose, but never hesitate to start a new discussion!

Re: All Purpose threads

And just to clarify, this is the all purpose discussion on all purpose threads. Please make sure all discussion on this topic is limited to this thread.

Re: All Purpose threads

Correct. This is the APAP thread, which is NOT to be confused with the APAPAP thread, which is where we discuss our sleep apnea machines.

I'm so glad that I no longer have to rely on single-purpose pine bark.

Re: All Purpose threads

I was going to start a multi-purpose thread but sticking this here. If admins
feel the need to split, please feel free...

Re: All Purpose threads

It occurs to me that I can't think of any single purpose of pine bark.

Re: All Purpose threads

So does the Sarah Huckabee Horse Shit thread belong in the Politics 2017 thread? I wish youse'd make up your minds.

Re: All Purpose threads

Segregating Huckabee Hound makes sense. As I said in some other thread,
I think in 2018 there should be like eight politics threads.

Ya know, like... Politics 2018 - IRS and Taxes, etc.

It's in your flowerbeds. Usually given the general name of "mulch," but pine bark is one of your options.

But you are already breaking the rules. You need to start a "Uses for pine park 18" thread.

Maybe these posts belong in the "All-Purpose Mulch Thread".
