54 Years in North NJ here. Possibly the coldest winter I have seen.

We are hunkered down in our "Valley Forge" Cabin.

Good luck Cooby & PA

36" inches of snow in Erie PA & Fmanland.

Be Safe.

I don't mind it, too terribly. I still ran outside three days this week. It's been a bigger bummer for my kids as they've been home all week on break, with my two year old niece whom my wife is watching for the week, but not able to play outside in the snow due to extreme temps.

Re: Should We Talk About the Weather? - 2018

Already have to change my outdoor kitties' water every couple of hours. Sucks, and when I go back to work it'll be worse.

Holy hell it's cold

Aha, here's the one I started.

Anyway, my two outdoor kitties have little heated houses (pads that heat when they lie down on them) My little girl Midnight uses hers all the time and I keep putting more and more stuff over it. The trick is of course to not make it scary for her. So today I put an old sheet (I think sheets are the most effective, even more than blankets on a cold night) and an old Garfield sleeping bag I found when I was cleaning out my closet over her house.
I also have sent for reflective blankets and a plug in water dish.

Pierce I don't know where he sleeps. I wish I did :( He has a little heated house here too if he wants it.

If you are wondering why I don't bring them in it's because I have six indoor cats and I honestly think these two are too wild, even for a couple of nights in a spare room.

I guess I don't either, too terribly lol. I'm in the woods with the dog at least
one hour every day and you do get used to it after a while. The wind was
brutal the last couple of days, goes right through you. Today in the sun, no
wind, 20° feels almost balmy.

We didn't get the snow that a bunch of youse got.

The pups wanted nothing to do with being outside the last couple of days. They would just do their business and go right back in. This morning, it was a balmy 9 outside, but no wind, so I was able to at least take them through the woods behind my house...

I mistakenly left a case of seltzer in the car. Pluses are that exploded black cherry seltzer ice chips is pleasant smelling. Of course, we're trading in this lease on Monday..

It's alright though, I made up for it by spilling a salted caramel mocha in the trunk, which dripped under the wheel well, and has presumably now frozen.

That's actually not all that out of whack for Juneau which is closer to a somewhat colder version of Seattle than it is to the cold in Fairbanks or most of the rest of mainland Alaska.
Some of Seattle's winter rains turn into Juneau snow, but it's basically the same sort of coastal overcast (only 80-some days of sun/year) as the rest of the Pacific northwest.

We're on our 4-5th water main break in our small city in as many days. The old

I have a guy who plows my driveway. He did, and then the wind blew the snow back across parts of it. I was going to call him to do it again when I got home from work yesterday.
So about 2PM I got a text from my wife. It said, "You don't have to call the guy, I did it myself". She added a selfie, bundled up with a snow shovel in hand, with the message, "Lithuanians rule!".
Good thing she got it before it really froze last night. It was 6 degrees below zero when we got up this morning.

With my wife away, the car was being underused (just short errand trips)

Re: Should We Talk About the Weather? - 2018

So we had 3 tickets to see Hamilton yesterday. Lefty Jr was going to take Amtrak Friday night and we'd have a nice weekend together. BUT the crazy weather cancelled all Northeast Corridor trains.

So, Plan B. He made a reservation on one of those D.C.-NYC buses leaving early Saturday morning. 7:15 departure, arriving Manhattan 11:45. So we'd just have lunch in the city before the 2pm curtain.

BUT, they cancelled the bus with no warning leaving him in the lurch again.

So, plan C. He and 3 others got an Uber, but they could only get as far as Princeton Junction. To have a margin for error he'd need to make the 11:31 train.

At 11:23 he texted they were still 13 minutes away. They weren't going to make it. Then at 11:36 he texts that they made the train because it was 5 minutes late- they jumped on the train just before the doors closed. So he made it by the skin of his teeth .

And Hamilton was awesome.

Thanks, Edgy.
They got their power back when we did. We were the last group in our town. They had to fix the lines and transformers between us and the generators before they could get to us. The neighboring city (the town line is less than four blocks away), gets their power feed from another direction. So our development is always the last. It took us 7 days to regain power after Sandy.

so, they basically closed every school in Sussex county for Monday, basically because too many roads are impassable and too many wires down that there’s no good way to reroute buses and keep kids safe. Half my neighborhood is slated to be without power until Thursday, and that date keeps getting pushed further out.

We personally dodged quite a bullet and have been warm and well electrified the whole time.

Joe was mentioned in the book as being fond of the words 'sh!t' and 'f*ck' and would use them in their various combinations.

He would also say after a win, "Good game, boys. Now go pound some Budweiser." Words we can all live by.

Of course. And that's why I used his name.
I wasn't sure which combination was appropriate in response to learning that more snow is coming.
Actually, they all are.

Re: Should We Talk About the Weather? - 2018

Mais oui!
Papillon means 'Butterfly' in French, hence the tattoo source of Henri Charriere's nickname.
Also the source of Papillon the dog breed [fimg=200]http://cdn2-www.dogtime.com/assets/uploads/gallery/papillon-dog-breed-pictures/3-yellowpup.jpg[/fimg] for obvious reasons.

The movie, btw, has been remade for release later this summer. Almost certainly a bad idea IMO, but maybe it'll surprise.
Speaking of remakes, looks like the recently released remake of 'Death Wish' is going over like a lead balloon. Not that the original DW was on a par with the Steve McQueen/Dustin Hoffman version of Papillon, but there doesn't seem to be a reason to remake either of them. The rotten reviews the new DW (Bruce Willis playing the lead) is getting certainly have something to do with it tanking, although I'd also like to think that people are deciding that a vigilante movie is exactly what we DON'T need at the moment. At least during the 1974 original the possibility of random, urban street crime was a very real fear for a lot of people. A remake now doesn't even have that going for it.

Looks like everyone chose to work from home. If the predictions are correct, it does look like it will be bad. With that, unless you are declaring a vacation, or personal day, I expect full access and production, as if you were in the office. Be patient. The reports say you'll be up to your knees in flurries before this ends.
But its not that bad here yet either.
We were able to make it to New Haven to see my Doctor, who gave me the OK to go back to work. It was over an hour drive each way, and we were sweating whether we'd be able to get home.

Not as bad here as I thought it would be.

Maybe 6-8 inches and stopping now.

We lost most of our trees during the last storm and will enjoy the real start of spring.

It has been a quiet winter, especially January & February. I have been dealing with my own new health issues as best I can.

The arsenal closes (usually) when the weather is bad. Certainly when there’s a ton of snow expected.

A while back there was a push to allow people to telework from home. The only caveat was that if the Arsenal closes due to weather, you still have to work from home. I did not fall for that trap.

The place where i work does not allow us to work from home for security reasons.
The problem is, they close for snow if the company president can't make it from bedroom to kitchen in the morning. That means almost never.
I've been home recuperating and have missed all four Nor'easters (including today) and have been on limited duty, so my wonderful wife has had to do all necessary shoveling. But I hope the weather gets better so the snow will melt, she won't have to shovel this one, and I can return to work next week.

Lava doesn't move that quickly.

I remember seeing that exact scene, except with dried solidified lava, when I visited the Big Island ten years ago. It's like they build the roads there knowing that eventually they'll be closed by lava and hoping to get as many years out of them as possible.

Thanks, to all who wished us well. Power came back on at 8:10 today.
Some people in town still don't have it. 93% of our town lost power. Four tornadoes came through western CT and at least two through our town. My wife was home and saw it lift three 60 foot trees out of the ground like picking candles out of a birthday cake, then drop them down.
Scary stuff.
